Dear friends,
I've been waiting for it to get cold enough to light a fire in the fireplace...
and Sunday was that day. The warmth from the fire was just what we needed. Like my Daddy used to say, "just enough to knock the chill out of the air".
Not sure if it was the smoke coming from the chimney or the smell of a wood fire that brought Poppy down from his tree. It's deer season, again!
Because of my "deleted" post some of you didn't meet "Patty" the hen. You know, cousin Patty paid for two of our new hens. She is always doing kind things like that so I figured the special hen in the bunch should be named after her...
The new hens tell me they want to fit in and get along with the old hens, but the old hens are ill and hateful. They peck really hard too.
A peek into the dirty old hen house. Remember, this little house is 30 years old and chickens are really messy...
I fixed up this end of the house just for the new hens since the old hens gather and roost at the opposite end. Hopefully both groups will work things out among themselves, soon!
Caught Miss Ducky looking at me through the weeds at the edge of the pond...
She is a sweetie pie and alone now and has the whole pond to herself. I want more ducks but Poppy says no! No more muscovy! He says once the muscovy ducks are gone, maybe mallards or wood ducks will nest around the pond and we will see baby wild ducks.
Speaking of Poppy!
Caught him coming down the tree. Must have been the fire in the fireplace. :) Last week it was black powder, this week started regular gun season. Now until January 1st. I dread it!
Kind of strange to see him sitting in a tree just outside the front door. From this tree he can look out over the cut-over. What a shame the entire hundred acres of woods where Poppy hunted is now gone.

Poppy does have another spot to hunt, down in the woods near the creek on our neighbor's property. That's a good thing!!
So glad you stopped by! Hope to see you again soon.
Love,
Henny
The crackling and popping of the fire made all of us sleepy...
Oh! Wow! That fire is amazing..I was just
ReplyDeletegoing downstairs to make a mug of lemon
tea..When..the fire came at me out of the
screen..And here you are..again..Lovely! :)
I always chuckle when you mention Poppy and
guns and hunting season, can't honestly
remember him actually shooting anything..! :).
Though l know someone in the White House needs
shooting..We're ALL having a laugh at old Trumpy,
over here..he says if he looses he'll leave the
US..God! He's got two golf clubs and hotels up
in Scotland! Heaven forbid..! HeHe! Bless him..! :(.
The new Chooks look really lovey Hetty..Especially
the black one..does he come from Motown..! Has he
go a Funky crow..! I've got an old Motown LP on in
the background at the moment..! :). LP mind..! :).
Good idea of Poppy's mallard ducks are better than
muscovy..they are friendlier, and become quite tame,
muscovy's can be aggressive, though you've only got
the one..
I had duck last Sunday..I'm l allowed to say that..! ;).
HeHe! Bless! It's a great life..if you don't weaken..! :o).
😼 🐾🐾 😼 🐾🐾 😼 🐾🐾 😼 🐾🐾 😼 🐾🐾 😼
Oh! Sorry! Calling you Hetty..
DeleteTrouble is, l don't even know anyone called
Hetty..Think l must be loosing it..! :O).
Glad Poppy still has somewhere close to hunt for free. So much hunting land requires a club membership now. :-(
ReplyDeleteI am dreading this election more than any in my 68 years. Praying for God's mercy for America.
I hope Poppy and Eli saved a cozy chair for you by that lovely fire.
ReplyDeleteLove a fire in the hearth! And love that pic of Eli sleeping in that chair! He is such a beautiful animal...
ReplyDeleteWe have had the heat on here. But then in two days it is to be 80 degrees...crazy temps. I like the little red chickens. So pretty. Hope your sweet Poppy get a nice big deer for the freezer. Blessings, xoxo, Susie
ReplyDeleteI do hope all the chickens start to get along, for the sake of the new lovely red ones. No one needs
ReplyDeletepecking on! Oh, I could use a fireplace here now. Thank goodness we only have 3 days of rain, that the
cold did not make it my way out of the west. But at 45, I could use some extra pretty heat! Poppy looked
pretty lonely up there with the clear cut ahead. But maybe the deer will show themselves easier. As long
as Poppy stays safe hunting, all is good.
your fire looks so welcoming...It was cool here last week as well, but now up in the upper 80's. Chickens, Ducks, Deer stands and hunting, fires....all of these things have to make you feel good. Have a Blessed day
ReplyDeleteHopefully the older hens will decide to play nice and welome the newcomers to the flock soon. Your little red ones are so cute and Patty is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Poppy still has a place to hunt, but it's still sad that all of those trees are gone. So much habitat destroyed. I keep thinking of all of the animals that are being killed and driven from their homes in the terrible fires this year.
Speaking of fires, yours looks so warm and welcoming. I would love to curl up in that chair with Eli. He looks so sweet and relaxed.
Blessings,
Betsy
I never knew some hens could be so bossy, lol. We have a duck family on our pond but I don't know what breed. Not Mallards but they look an awful lot like them.
ReplyDeleteBe well and stay safe.
xx, Carol

ReplyDeletea nice fire burning in the fireplace sounds lovely. There is a chill and where I live you can feel it in your bones. Eli what a doll slepping in that chair.
ReplyDeleteOh how I love a fire in the fireplace like that! It looks so warm and cozy! Eli sure looks sweet sleeping in his chair. It's nice to see your new chickens again too. Stay warm and dry with these coming cold days! xxx
ReplyDeleteA nice warm fire is so nice!!! Poppy is way up there.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing quite like a fire. If I had a fireplace, I would probably have a fire in the summer sometimes. Not joking.
ReplyDeleteDear Henny, what a treat to see you back and blogging so soon! Love the pictures of your fire and sweet Eli sound asleep too. So glad poppy has another place to hunt besides right outside your door. I like your big black patty hen and the lovely duck too....wouldn't it be swell to have wood ducks or mallards? Take good care!
ReplyDeleteYou've got an anonymous TROLL October 20th at 11:15 am, that you'll want to Delete Henny!!!
ReplyDeleteI wish we had a fireplace. I'd love to have it burning right now. It's getting chilly here! I hope Poppy's hunting goes well in the new spot.
ReplyDeleteOh your fire looks amazing. I love your black hen she is so pretty.i hope they all get along soon. That must be very stressful. I know what you mean about hunting season. I cannot wait for it to be over. We have three deer that we see in your yard every evening.pretty watching them a we sit on our back porch.
ReplyDeleteAnd do I ever remember cleaning chicken houses. You're right . they ar messy but dad made us clean the chicken house every summer.
ReplyDeleteWe used to heat with a wood stove that ad a glass door but have no chimney anymore. I miss the stove and watching the flames.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a pretty clean chicken coop to me! Aren't chickens cruel to each other? Pecking order is real! That black hen is beautiful. I hope your husband gets a deer and then he can come down from his tree. -Jenn
ReplyDeleteSitting by that crackling fire sounds wonderful. I would probably run out and get my weiner roasting stick or a bag of marshmallows. :)
ReplyDeleteAt one time we kept a few backyard hens. The first batch were so tame and friendly. Eventually they were replaced by some of the wickedest, cruel creatures ( maybe your 'old' hens are like that).
ReplyDeleteWe were over at youngest son's place on Sunday and he had a roaring fire going. It was a bit smoky and I came home smelling like a campfire.
That fire looks so inviting. Love your big white Sleeping Beauty, and all the new fowl babies are beautiful, too. You have a great life. So sad about the trees. Have a great Fall.
ReplyDeleteHi Henny- Your Fire Place looks terrific- so warm and comfortable on a Wintery Night. Best Wishes. KEV.
ReplyDeleteHi Henny,
ReplyDeleteI will get cozy with you by the fire. :-)
The photo of your duck saying Hi is so pretty. I like the sparkle of the sun.
The fireplace look so warm and cozy. I love the photo of Penny. Good luck with Poppy and his hunting.
ReplyDeleteA crackling fire!! How nice! I found out that our wood stove is garbage, sigh. I hope we can replace it next year! Beautiful photo of your sleepy furball! :)
ReplyDeleteNothing like that first fire of the season. We have someone coming to check the fireplace on our new (old) place before we start using the fireplace. Just want to make sure everything is safe.
ReplyDeleteWe have a couple of hunters in our family but they are not avid about it. I think they go as much for the companionship as the hunting itself...and the eating. They are a couple of really good cooks! xo Diana
Your fire looks so cozy. I can just smell it and hear the crackles and pops. Toooooo warm here yet. I hope your chickens decide to get along. You could always threaten the older group with the soup pot if they can’t behave! Poppy sure has the best view around from that tree.
ReplyDeleteNothing sounds or feels better than a warm crackling fire on a cold day. It is still in the 80’s here but we have had some mornings where the temps have been in the 50’s. It’s the cold rainy days that make me want to knock the chill off.
ReplyDeleteI like your Hens. I wish I had two hens. I would love to go out and grab some fresh eggs.
Lisa
Your wood fire looks so inviting. There just doesn't seem to be anything more cozy than a warm hearth. Eli looks like he certainly enjoys the heat - well take care of Patty and the hens. See you soon friend. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteNothing better than a warm fire on a cool day.
ReplyDeleteThe deer will love the new tender shoots in the hundred acre cut. No fear, they will be there.
ReplyDeletePoppy has a clear view now! Hope he has good luck hunting! Hope your chickens all get along before long:)
ReplyDeletePatty is a beautiful hen. Your fire looks so welcoming and cozy, a great way to celebrate winter. I hope Poppy has much success this hunting season (and stays safe). Mxx
