Should I even publish this!

Would you look what a difference a little rain has made...
it's now looking more like the month of October, and Fall, and has put a touch of gold in the trees.

Got a new sunflower poster to show you...
I loved the other one, with the huge yellow sunflower and a big bee, but it was laminated and the glare was just too much.

Oh, thank you for the comments on my last post. There were a couple of questions...

Rian, these little fig trees are sprouts from our "Brown Turkey" fig...
Oh gosh, I love fresh figs too. Love eating them right off the tree. So happy to finally have a fig tree growing and producing big sweet figs.

Pilar, I don't put leaves inside the greenhouse, but do add them to garden and around the pots inside the garden. I'm kinda like Tasha Tudor when it comes to adorable little mice...
In fact, I have rescued two of them here on our teeny tiny farm, and posted about them,  (under "labels", see posts called "Mouse Rescue") if you would be at all interested. Just don't tell Poppy :)

Here's another adorable mouse...
a little birthday gift from my daughter Andee.

M.K., Oh my goodness, thank you for the nice compliment. I do have good luck rooting cuttings but, it is just "luck"! I sure don't feel very knowledgeable about anything. :)

The rooted fig trees are from little sprouts broken off the stump of a fig tree that had been chopped down. I haven't tried rooting a fig cutting yet but plan to try.

For roses and box woods, and most other shrubs...I take clippings about six to eight inches long, cut off most the leaves and any buds or flowers and put the cuttings in a bucket of water to sit for thirty minutes or so. Fill pots with potting soil and stick a cutting in each pot, firming the soil around cutting, and water well. I keep these newly potted cuttings near the outside faucet so I will remember to keep  them moist.

I've never had any luck rooting little short pieces of plants, or if the cuttings begin to dry out. A neighbor trimmed her yellow knockout roses and brought me all the trimmings. I was tickled to death. I trimmed them and made several pots but none of them rooted. I suppose the cuttings were not put in water soon enough. Also, cuttings root easier in spring and early summer.

Oh, MK, this is how I root cuttings. I'm sure there are better, more professional ways.

Wish I had all the money back that I've spent on plants that didn't make it, the thirty years we've lived here. I would have a little spending money!

Good gosh! Time is flying! Hope to be back real soon.

Love,
Henny

  1. Did you make the large house mouse? So cute. Good thing that is not a live cat in the background!
Too close in the same size, what a fight they would have.

    1. Thank you Lynn. No, I didn't make that cute mouse. I would love to be able to make them for the craft bazaars.

  2. Hello Henny,
It is always a joy reading your posts.
I am off to harvest my kale in our garden. Our growing season is just about done here in Wisconsin.

  3. I'm not keen on real live mice but I do love the one that Andee gave you!!

I know what you mean about all the money one spends on plants that end up not thriving. I don't have much luck getting cuttings to grow. I did take some cuttings from one of my favourite roses that had to be dug out when the new fence went in. I hope those 'take'.

  12. Love that cuddly mouse from Andee gave to you. I admire your care of the real mice, but I confess, I don't like them in my house OR trailer! No matter how cute they are, I just can't stand them inside my living space.
Thank you for your sweet comment on my blog today. We truly appreciate your prayers, especially for Karen.
    Blessings,

    1. Thank you Willie. Mice do have the sweetest little faces, and those whiskers! I'm looking forward to the time change. Maybe I can get dinner finished and the dishes washed before 7:30. Poppy hunts and sits in a tree until dark which makes us later finishing dinner. Know what you mean about Poppy and animals. He comes homes from hunting most days to tell me about some little creature he rescued while sitting in the tree waiting to kill a big buck. Yesterday it was an inch worm rescued from a yellowjacket. I've seriously thought about posting the story...it's funny. We keep putting off getting the dreaded Windows 10. I will be totally confused with it.

  14. Hi Henny- I'm not much of a gardener- watering the plants with the hose or watering can is about me. Near forty years ago we made regular trips to local Garden Shops and brought home mostly small tropical palms and native plants...you should see them now -everything has grown huge and we've had to remove some of the Bottlebrush Trees as they grew too big. Anyway- hope you have success with your Fig Trees Henny. Cheers. KEV.

  15. My mom would envy you for your fruiting fig-- and while I'm sure I would too, if I knew their flavor, I envy you the plant for its leaves! It's very pretty. Ok, about the mouse picture...If I had stumbled on such a pic, some 2 or 3 years ago, I would have shut my eyes tight and swallowed a scream! I had never known I had a phobia of them, until I encountered them in the house. Their droppings alone give me anxiety! But this summer, I found a dead one outside and I didn't freak out! I calmly picked it up to dispose of it and even admired its cuteness. I felt very encouraged and thankful that I'm slowly overcoming the gripping fear. The next goal is to attempt to save them live-- and I think I want to cry just thinking about it. Happy to see some autumnal beauty in your area. Blessings to all : )

  16. Hey Pilar. I'm sorry about your phobia of mice. To see one inside the house would probably make me scream and jump up on a chair too. :) Tiny mice are cute though.

  17. I like your new poster. Glad you got some rain too. Here in Northern Indiana we have had a little too much rain. Our trees are just starting to change colors. We have wind and rain in the forecast for Saturday and Sunday so I suspect more will fall. Our first snowfall usually happens in the first November weekend. Time to hibernate is getting close.
    Happy Halloween
    xx, Carol

  20. My Annie when she was little had a thing for mice, and loved a book called the Christmas Mouse, and we got her the reusable Advent calendar with the Christmas Mouse theme. It was a part of her childhood tradition. I envy your green thumb, while I can plant from seed and potted seedlings, I have never had any luck with cuttings. My dad could take a cutting from a plant and soon have a new healthy, growing plant.

  22. OK, first of all we love your posts... about anything. Second, One of our 2 fig trees is a Brown Turkey, the other is a Celeste Fig. The Brown Turkeys are good, but we find the Celeste smaller and sweeter. However, this year we had a bumper crop for whatever reason... definitely enough to share with birds, turtles, squirrels, as well as friends and neighbors.
And third, that is an adorable mouse!

  23. I think mice are cute, too. But not in the house! The Airbnb we stayed at in the mountains had beautiful gardens around it and she had a huge fig BUSH. And there were green figs on it in October??? We love our fig tree, too, but I don’t think it will ever, ever be that big.

  24. My mom and a friend of hers would start plants like this...her friend was especially good at starting things. Seems like no matter what she tried, it grew.

  25. Hi Henny! Oh, I love that big sunflower pic! Wow! Mice are cute but I don't want any real ones around here. Ha! Take care, sweet friend.

  30. Henny I am thinking you have a "Green Thumb". I have never done well with root cuttings. Tried roses under a glass jar...for me it didn't work. :(! Like you I think I would have a boat load of extra money for all the plants that I purchased that didn't make it. Love your Sunflower Poster. Are they not the most cheerful of flowers!! Have a delightful day - hope fall colors come your way soon. Hugs!

  31. I have a similar green house. My hubby bought a solar panel, ran it to a battery. He uses this to run a heater we purchased at a garage sale it keeps my green house warm. We use the same set up to run our automatic gate opener. It works very well, costs no money to operate after the intial cost. I enjoy your blog very much, can't get enough of that sweet eli.
