Smokey and a big red apple

Looks like ole sweet Mokey is about to outgrow the rocking chair...
actually, somebody put that rooster pillow in the chair and took up most of the room.

Don't you dread the morning you're scheduled for blood work and can't have your coffee? Wouldn't be so bad if I were a late sleeper, but I'm not.  I'm usually putting the coffee on at 4:30 every morning.

Anyhow, I was at the doctor's office at 8:00 when the receptionist unlocked the door. One guy beat me in, but still I was done by 8:30. The mug of coffee waiting in the car was cold but delicious.

Shoot, I was in Walmart shopping before 9:00. See the Red Delicious apple I bought...

Red Delicious apples bring back lots of memories...especially of Christmas. There was always a big one in our Christmas stocking on Christmas morning.

and Mama's fruit bowl was always filled with Red Delicious apples. She used to wash and dry the apples, then with the dish towel, polish each one until it sparkled. Apples way too pretty to eat.

I bought only one Red Delicious, for me, for old times sake. Then bought a bag of Sweet Tango and a bag of Ambrosia. So many new varieties to choose from now. Do you love apples?

Not much of a post but I need to get back in the sewing room and try to sew a little. I appreciate your visiting.

Love,
Henny

  1. I only have to a blood draw fast four times a year. And I hate the fasting part. I always stop at the convenience store near the doctor’s office and buy a diet soda with caffeine (I don’t like coffee) and a donut. Ten seconds after leaving the doctor, I’ve got the soda in one hand the donut in the other.

    1. Hey Denny, I know what you mean. I had that cup of coffee in my hands in about ten seconds. :)

  2. I have two kittens the same color as Smokey. He's a very pretty cat; I'd love to stroke his soft fur. Are you sewing aprons? I've made a few while on my blogging break.

    1. Two kittens! I bet they're cute. I'm trying my best to make another apron and a bonnet, but I've just been so burnt out with sewing. We have a craft show in November. I really need to get going.

  3. Smokey looks so cute sleeping in the rocker. Why just an hour ago I told my hubby I could watch cats sleep forever they look so cute and it relaxes you to watch them. Our two cats were curled up together and one had her little paws over her eyes. Red Delicious are my favorite apples! Your childhood stocking reminds me of ours. We'd get an apple, tangerines and a handful of mixed nuts. Take care Henny!

    1. Hey Bonnie. It does relax you to watch cats sleeping. I can never resist taking their picture. Two sleeping curled up together is even cuter. Yes, we got the tangerine and nuts in our stockings too. Now a days I think there is way too much junk in stockings to add fruit. :)

  4. I pass on the Red Delicious...I too recall when we got them in a bag at Christmas with peanuts! Now a days I like Raeburns and Honeycrisp:)

  5. I love apples, especially honey crisp, but I do love red delicious. I remember the first time I had them. It was after my mom’s parents had retired and moved down to Massachusetts from Vermont. We went visit and my grandma sent me out to the back hall to get her some apples from a bushel basket. They were so pretty, what Snow White’s apple looked like. She washed them and gave me one. I smiled when you wrote, too pretty to eat after being polished. I remember grandma polishing up the one she gave me on her apron. I remember the first bite as there was an almost strawberry like flavor to it. I polished that apple off quickly.

    1. Oh Mary, I love this story! I bet there were many aprons used to polish apples, don't you? I'm always wanting to buy a bushel of apples, this time of the year. There's just something about a bushel of apples. :)

  8. I just had my annual blood work last week and it was so good to be able to get a cup of tea afterwards. I hope all was well with your blood work. Just before I read your post I ate a red delicious apple! I actually bought 5 of them at Walmart yesterday. It was so sweet and delicous. I hope you get your flu shot soon. I've been told that it's expected to be a bad flue season. I do hope "they" are wrong. :-)
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  9. Hi Henny- If my Doctor wants me to fast for a blood test it is usually a battle as I tend to wake at 3:00am for a snack- it all goes back to when I was working at the Factory and woke then at 4:00am to get ready for work. Smokey looks very content there on the Rocking Chair- what a life! (I think I'll come back as a cat). You know the old saying: "An Apple A Day Keeps The Doctor Away"...just about true. Best Wishes. KEV.

    1. Oh Kev, that does make it hard...that's a long wait before having something to eat or drink. Cats do have it made, don't they? Well lots of them do anyway. I do believe that old saying about apples. Henny

  11. I'm so old that when I was a kid I only remember the MacIntosh apples. Now I know there were many more varieties at that time but only the macIntosh was available.

  12. Hi Henny Penny :)) Your Smokey reminds me so much of our Leo! Put a towel on anything and it becomes the cats' beds. Pillows are like heaven for them lol...so cute! Oh bloodwork, I hate going. I LOVE my morning coffee, I'm a creature of habit so it's not easy for me to change my routines!

  13. Henny glad you survived without your early morning coffee - I certainly empathize with you since 4:30 is generally when I pour my first cup of the day. Smokey looks quite cozy. Have a wonderful day...apples are such a great snack...my favorite is the Honey Crisp. Hugs!

  14. Yes, there are a bewildering number of different kinds of apples around. I love them all except for Granny Smith ( too tart) and Red Delicious ( I find them mealy). We picked Jonagolds this week and I still have some Honey Crisp and Gala in the fridge. Yum.

  15. Oh yes, I love apples, my favorite is Honey Crisp.
You do get up early. I get up at 6:15 and don't eat breakfast till later after I get back from walking. I'm one of those people who don't like coffee!!

  18. I have an apple for lunch every day, usually a Gala or a Fuji, but this time of the year, with the new crop, I occasionally spring for a Honey Crisp. Our state, Washington, is famous for our apple production.

  19. I have fasting blood work twice a year, and was told I could have black coffee or tea before if I want. I usually don't, though, because I like creamer in my coffee. Your dear kitty looks so peaceful. They are the greatest sleepers, aren't they! Do you think red delicious apples taste as they did when they came on the market years and years ago? I loved them then, but they aren't the same anymore. I hope yours was a great one!!

  20. Red delicious apples remind me of Christmas, too. I do like good apples...have tried some new ones that I do not care for. Braeburn are a favorite, though.

  21. Smokey looks very comfy in the rocker. We always got an apple and an orange in our Christmas stockings... and some nuts in the shells. So exciting for us at the time... I love the Cortlands, best for cooking or eating...

  22. Sweet Smokey looks so cozy!! I love apples and I remember getting apples and oranges in my stocking. I remember daddy rolling orange and sticking piece of red bird peppermint stick in it to suck out the juice. Hope your blood work comes back good. Love you bunches!!

  24. I love photos of sleeping cats! Red Delicious were our apples of choice when we were kids. They grew right in our own Washington State! Yum! Happy sewing, dear Henny. I'm meant to be sewing costumes. I am procrastinating.

  25. Yes...I know that no coffee before lab work feeling. Last year I got up early and went to the lab on a Saturday morning only to find there was a kink...the lab request was not called in so I had to come back another day. 2 days with no coffee in the AM!! I have my pot on a 5 AM timer so the smell wakes me up and I can start my day.

Your apple reminds me of this story. I once had a black lab who loved the tomatoes on our vines and would steal them all the time. Then when Christmas came, i decorated the tree with artificial apples which she must have thought were tomatoes because she began taking them off the tree when we weren't looking.
    happy Halloween
    xx, Carol

  27. Oh, I think those honey crisp apples are just about the best for eating out of hand. But very expensive. i wish I could get some graves, cortland, or wealthy apples for pies but you never see them in the stores or at our local orchard either. Too bad.

  28. I don't like to eat apples straight, but I like them sliced thin, with a little cheese, on a cracker :) Of all apples, Red Delicious are my least favorite because they're not usually firm enough. But yes -- my daddy loved his Red Delicious apples too! In our Christmas stockings we always had one big orange in the toe :)
