Maybe tomorrow

I've been wanting to decorate for Christmas for a while now and thought about bringing in the tree as soon as the dishes were washed on Thanksgiving day, but...

easily distracted, I got the tree as far as the front porch and it's been there ever since.

why even yesterday, after dropping Poppy off at his hunting spot down the power line...I came back and walked straight to the shop to bring in boxes of Christmas decorations, but...

leaning there against a big willow oak tree was the rake, handle deep in leaves, and I could not resist the temptation, so raked leaves for over an hour.  Still no decorating done.

Early yesterday I had both dentist and doctor appointments. After that, went on to Walmart for a few things. Since the day was about shot anyway, I stopped by the Safe Space thrift store and oh wow! how could one little thrift store be so packed. It was like a little Christmas village.Wish I had pictures to show you! I bought two little pieces...

the carolers!

and this little red outhouse, for setting up a Christmas village on the mantle.

Do any of you have a toy train that you set up around the Christmas tree? I really really want one...and don't know why we've never bought one over the years. Trains are so neat!

Maybe I will talk to Poppy tomorrow about a train. Right now he is asleep in front of the TV.

Better get things turned off in the sewing room. I've been sewing, finishing two bonnets and almost finished another Henny Penny apron. Hope to see you tomorrow.

Love,
Henny

  1. I was planning to start decorating today, but by the time I had walked and cleaned house and sorted and put away stuff, it was 4:00 and I was too tired. I'll start tomorrow.

  2. I'm so glad you took the time to pop into the thrift store. The carolers are so nice and the outhouse will be great in the Christmas village. Oldest son had an electric train set before he was out of his crib ( you know who it was really for!!) but we never used it around the Christmas tree. I've only ever seen that in magazines.

    1. I've seen that in magazines too and always thought it looked pretty. I love the carolers.

  3. Well it's a pretty tree! And I think that little outhouse is going to be really cute in a village scene. As far as decorating, I kind of have a 'What About Bob' habit of decorating. In that movie, he was always being told "Baby steps...baby steps" My tree got put up today and plugged in, and one ornament is hanging on it. Maybe tomorrow we'll find the box of ornaments. Baby Steps...Baby Steps.

  4. Oh, there are just so many things to do this time of the year. Since our daughter and granddaughters were here for Thanksgiving and stay home at Christmas, I was thinking that I had lots of time for working on Christmas decorating and the making of gifts. Now I have company coming next weekend from Oregon, Florida and Minnesota. All family, so it can be pretty informal, but all men, so I'll be busy cooking and cleaning, LOL. Then the next weekend we have relatives coming from California, Arizona and Indiana. I told them all that I could put up beds in the barn and that I have mattresses up in the loft if they want to save on Motel rates. My sister is in the nursing home on hospice care and everyone is coming to say goodbye. Our home has always been the family meeting place . . . it will be nice to see everyone and get a chance to visit, but the circumstances could be better. I'm going to be a busy girl . . . some of my gift making might become New Year's presents, LOL. Where does the time go :) I have trouble wrapping my mind around what is happening and it seems to get me distracted instead of speeding be on.
Wow, sorry to dump all that on you. I guess I needed to share it. Life is filled with ups and downs, births and deaths, good health and bad, weddings and funerals . . . it's just hard when it is so close to home. My sister and I have never been close (our personalities are night and day) but I love her and it's so hard to see her drifting away.

    1. Thank you Connie. I appreciate your comment very much. I am so sorry about your sister. You really have had a lot going on lately and gosh, I can't imagine having that many folks coming. Of course, I can understand why so many would want to visit and stay at your place. You probably make each one feel comfortable and at home. The way you work, I am sure you will have it all done and perfect. Take care..

  5. Hope your appts. went well. I had a dental cleaning on Tues. and a physical yesterday. That thrift store sounds fun. I love the two pieces you selected. My late mom had a Christmas village - when she got too much to fit on the mantle, we would put the village around the base of the Christmas tree and then the toy train around the village. It was great fun for her grandchildren and the CAT! lol

    1. Thank you Mildred. Guess it's good to get both appointments done the same day. I may have too much on the mantle already! :)

  6. I love being outside too. I have hunters too close to our property, and shots firing too close, so I'm inside for a few more days. I love getting fresh air and sun when I can get it.

    1. Oh, it's scary when the hunters get too close. It used to be that way here.

  7. Sweet little Christmas figurines, you find the best bargains !
It's been almost seventy degrees here, not the kind of weather that encourages you to stay inside.
We've been leaf-raking and tidying for winter also, in flip-flops no less :)
Have a good weekend Henny !

  11. We did have a train around the Christmas tree - when the kids were little. Now I think my oldest son has it. DH and I had a smaller one that we set up on a game table for the grandkids. It was broken many times and fixed, but alas, I think it is no longer fixable. But I may set it up anyway. Still looks good... just doesn't "go" anymore. As for decorating, I'm for doing it slowly... day by day sounds good to me.

    1. Hope you do put the train up. I guess slowly is best, but I did get a lot done today. Thank you Rian.

  12. I laughed at this Henny because we have an out-house on our tree, too. lol When I found it I had to have it since we decorate the retired one here for Christmas. We used to have a train around our tree but it's just to tiny in the mouse-house for one now. I hope yu do enjoy decorating for Christmas. You really have to just do it when the urge hits. I posted today with a pic of me wearing the gorgeous apron you sent. drop by. xo

    1. Well Deb, anything to do with an outhouse makes me think of you! I love your real outhouse! Thank you for showing the apron. You really do have to be in the mood to fix for Christmas.

  13. I am visiting here via Deb's blog 'Just Cats'. Love your aprons! Your bonnets are adorable. Reminds me of being a young girl and the church having 'old fashioned' Sunday where everyone dressed up 'old fashioned' and my step-granny made us all bonnets.

I've already read through several of your past posts and plan to read more.

I am slowly decorating for Christmas myself. :-)

    Happy Christmas decorating ~ FlowerLady

  14. I haven't put up our tree yet and probably won't for another week or so.
We don't have a train under the tree but half of our basement is filled with Ken's HO train layout. Not something you can take down. It is always there.
I love the little red outhouse.

  15. Hi,
We plan to decorate this weekend. Yes, we do put a train around our tree. I am so excited to decorate this year, I am like a little kid. ;-) I am just giddy, my husband keeps teasing me about it. :-)

    1. Oh Carla, I'm the same way! I love Christmas! Your boys probably enjoyed the trains.

  16. Oh a little train would really be cute. Will the cats leave it alone or be attracted by the movement? I can see catastrophe written all over that scenario (ever the optimist here!).

I do little decorating, I'm not a Christmassy person and the cat's make most of the level surfaces around here too dangerous for things that I don't want to be broken. A few things on the mantle and maybe some garland along the top of the doorway into the living room and a couple of wreaths on the outside. Often I decorate on my birthday, but goodness that's only a little over a week away and there is so much stuff that I need to do (finishing one present and finding a few more, wrapping stuff, boxing up those going out of state, Christmas cards----makes me tired just thinking about it all) might just skip the whole shebang.

So you need to make merry and decorate for the both of us.

    1. Bet these cats would drive me crazy with a train. But you know, it's odd, but neither cat has ever touched anything on the Christmas tree. My daughter's cat pulls things off her tree and tears them up. Is Dec. 8th your birthday? :)

    2. No, it's the 10th, just too close to Christmas to make much of an occasion of it.

But,I have gotten almost all my Christmas shopping done in the last few days. Glory be!! Now to rummage in the attic for sturdy enough boxes to use for mailing.

  17. Hi Henny Penny, We have cut back on decorating this year so now can just enjoy what we have put up. I realized this year that I don't really like decorating Christmas trees although I love to see them up! Here is a good video on making the fold over pot holders. A friend told me how to do the first couple of rows and then I referred to the video for the rest. Nancy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwPmG2bFrYM

  18. Yes we have lots of trains we could put around the tree but we have not done that is a number of years:) I would rather be outside than inside too:)

  19. I have been wondering today, if you might be inside decorating the tree. I am still putting off the chore, for first I want to clean the windows and curtains through which the merry little lights will twinkle. I think a train around a tree is just the best thing of all!

  21. My my, aren't you the busy one! You gotta love those thrift stores. Mom and dad love browsing through them from time to time. You can almost always find just some right little thing you've been searching for. They found one of my food dishes that way. Happy weekend to you!

  22. Why, thank you Cleo. So you are in Chapel Hill? That's not too far from where we live...Bet our Bickett, Dumperoo, and Smokey will enjoy keeping up with your blog. Thank you for visiting.

  23. I'm doing JUST the same this year, regarding Christmas decorating! Usually I'm pronto, right on it. But this year we have no kid in the house (for the first time in nearly 27 years!) and I'm less motivate. Besides, neither of us wants to climb up into the attic to get the boxes. Tomorrow is first Sunday of Advent! We'd better get our act together. Your little outhouse is too adorable!
