Now that Christmas is past, can we start thinking about spring and gardening? Maybe we should wait until after next weekend?

Look! I got a rooster for Christmas! from our sweet friend Nellie.

Hope you all had a good Christmas. It was quiet here. We had a last minute change of plans, so it was just Poppy and me. I dashed out on Christmas Eve and bought groceries.

As it turned out, we had a good Christmas, and a good dinner on Christmas day. We had turkey, broccoli casserole, collards, turnips, cranberry sauce, and hot rolls...and for desert, a big sticky pecan pie. Even without the dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, and sweet potato casserole it was more than enough.

after the dishes were washed, we walked...there's Smokey, on Poppy's left.

here, near the bog.

home again, home again, jiggity-jog.  :)  little by little I'm getting the leaves raked up. We can see green again! We don't burn the leaves, we add them to the garden and to our several big compost piles.

Two aprons cut out and ready to sew. I'm getting tired of using the same pattern and need a change. The little scalloped, reversible apron is really cute.

and this one too, I hope, in the blue daisy fabric. Trouble with these styles, especially the reversible apron is the amount of fabric needed.

Sewing is more fun when you have several things cut out.

Leaf raking continues...in fact, yesterday after snacking all day, then sitting down to a big meal, I was miserable...aha! just the thing to work off that piece of pecan pie...the rake! and so I did...raked leaves for one hour and twenty minutes. Today I have raked leaves for one hour!

Can't wait to read about Christmas Day at your place. Be there shortly.

Love,
Henny

P.S. Poppy got me a "Fitbit" for Christmas. Sure wish I could have been wearing it during all that leaf raking. It will take me until next year at this time to figure out how to use it. We need to download an app! "What the heck is an app", asked Poppy,  "and you're asking me", replied Henny.

  1. Hi Henny, so glad you and Poppy had a nice Christmas. It was a quiet day here too.
No seeing green around here anymore! We have been receiving freezing rain all day. No fun.
    Love your new rooster.

    1. Freezing rain sounds cold! Our bad weather usually starts in January. Than you Robin.

  2. You two are so funny. :) I hope you get a lot of use out of your gift. I need one for when I walk. I haven't seen a leaf for two months. Lots of snow and freezing rain today. :( And so many travellers...ugh! I have had internet problems over the Christmas week, Henny, so was unable to send you a proper "thank you" for your card and ornaments. I love them so much. Thank you. Enjoy the Christmas week ahead and give those critters a hug for me. "Hi Smokey" xo

  3. Hi dear friend. It was 76 here on Christmas day and my husband raked a few leaves. Today we have rain. I know several bloggers with fitbit and I wish you luck with it. Just the 2 of us for Christmas but we had a lovely time in our new (to us) home. Like you, I am now focused on plans for the yard this spring! lol
All the best in the new year. xoxo

    1. I've never heard of the Striiv. Of course, I don't know anything about the Fitbit either. Hopefully, I will learn. Glad you had a good Christmas.

  5. A nice calm, quiet Christmas here. Just us and the cats (they slept most of the day away of course). Warm, warm up in the mid 60's yesterday and today. Rain today and colder temps coming overnight. Can't complain, it is almost January after all. The days are getting longer little by little and soon we will have daylight at 7:00 something rather than 8:00 something. That will be nice. Every day brings us closer to SPRING. Yea. I've got my lists all ready and am set to go.

    1. Sounds just like our Christmas. January and February are usually when our winter weather really sets in. You're right, every day brings us a little closer to spring. :) Happy New Year!

It's almost time to wish you and your hubby a Happy New Year! We had a lovely Christmas with kids and grandkids. Christmas Eve we went on a sleigh ride through the most beautiful woods with frosty snow on all of the evergreen trees making it so magical! And big beautiful horses pulling the sleigh like Belgians and Clydesdales. That's a memory to last for a long time! Thank you for your blog and great pictures. I like those glowing eyes on Smokey in that picture with your hubby and Eli! Take care and have fun sewing!

    1. Dianne, I've always thought a sleigh ride like you have described would be the perfect thing to do on Christmas. I love pictures and cards showing sleigh rides through snowy woods. You always make me feel good about my silly blog and I appreciate that so much. Glad you had a wonderful Christmas. Happy New Year!

  7. Yeah for a Fitbit, I have one too, sometimes I take it off and then forget to put it back on again! You will like it. I just monitor my steps and the minutes spent on the exercise bike. It is a breeze to install, just put the little thingy in your computer and it will install itself:)

    1. Sure hope I get the hang of it! That's all I want it for...to count my steps. I know the little thingy you're talking about...we did that. Hopefully, we're on our way. Thanks!

    1. Bet you had a wonderful dinner. Being just the two is not a bad thing. I do miss the days when all the grandchildren were small and here opening gifts. Happy New Year, Red.

  9. It sounds like a lovely Christmas Henny! I make pecan pie every Thanksgiving and Christmas - it's my favorite! You will love your Fitbit once you get used to it. I find that I do get up and move more when I'm wearing it and it can be fun to keep up with your steps.

It looks like you had great weather for Christmas. Here in Missouri we have had the craziest weather. A week ago we had below 0 temps and snow and then Christmas we had 60's and the back door open.

Don't work too hard raking all those leaves Henny! Enjoy your holiday week!

    1. Hey Bonnie. I think so too...the Fitbit. I'm always saying to Poppy, I bet I've walked five miles today! That is crazy weather and it has been the same here. Two days the bunny's water bottles froze, the next two days I raked leaves in a tee shirt. I'm sure we are in for some winter weather come January and February. You too, enjoy Christmas week and have a happy New Year.

  11. I do like that wrap-around apron, although from a business perspective the extra fabric is a problem.
Who needs a treadmill when you have a yard full of leaves? The usual goal on a Fitbit is 10,000 steps a day - I predict you'll average 20,000 with all that you do at home.

  12. Merry Christmas! Your Christmas dinner and your walk sounds wonderful. As for the fitbit, my daughter has one and uses it constantly. DH and I just use our iPhones. They count your steps too. You'll enjoy it and probably be doing 10,000 very quickly. And I agree that having more than one project in the making (as in "several things cut out")is more fun.

  14. I'm afraid that I don't know what a Fitbit is, but I sure do love your rooster. He is gorgeous and a perfect gift for a country gal like you. Love those apron patterns, too.
    Happy new Year!
    Connie :)

  17. Love your rooster! Sounds like y'all had a peaceful and perfect day! I've cut down on all the extra dishes too on holidays....it's much simpler and like you said--we still have more than enough. We had turkey on Thanksgiving so we had a ham for Christmas. Your Smokey kitty is the twin to our Smokey for sure!

  18. Hi Hetty, It is never too soon to think about gardening again, bring out the catalogues!
I am beginning to wish 8 of my roosters were made of metal, they are driving me crazy... why is it, out of a dozen little hatchlings, I end up with only 4 females?!!!!!
I really like the apron pattern on top, and the delicate pinks you have chosen to stitch it, very feminine and sweet.

  19. Your Christmas Day sounded very relaxing and low-key...I like those kind of holidays every now and then! Your aprons are so adorable...love the fabrics and patterns. Where do you sell them?? I am ready to start getting a move on, myself...and all this eating has got to stop! Lord, knows I could use a fit bit too...lol! Happy New Year, Henny! ♥
