Catching up

Poppy is a big big fan of Amazon.  Amazon is wonderful! I mean, anything you could possibly need or want is available through Amazon.

A few nights ago, Poppy was using our old yard stick that hangs on a nail just inside the pantry door to measure the width of the TV cabinet. The yard stick broke. Yep, several inches broke right off the end. Actually, the yard stick had broken several years ago and had been glued together. At one time, yard sticks were free...given by hardware stores as advertisements. Anyhow, Poppy went straight to Amazon. Dern, he said. I can get a yard stick delivered to our front door for five dollars, free shipping. Oh really, I said, and thought no more about it.

Yesterday the mailman backed into the driveway and unloaded a box way to big to fit in our mail box up at the highway. Gosh, what could this be! I left the big box standing on the porch leaning against the wall. It sure didn't weigh much.

What's this, asked Poppy when he got home from work.

Seriously!  We laughed.

You know friends, I've had this worried feeling all along, that spring, in all it's glory, had arrived here way too soon. Looks like that feeling turned out to be right.

Remember that hickory tree that towers high above the goat lot...covered in tender bright green leaves...this one...

Well, Tuesday night the temperature dropped to 31 degrees and it must have been mighty cold way up there.

because here's that hickory tree now...leaves black and curled...makes me sad,

and the little fig tree that I moved from the garden to the south side of the house...well it had big green leaves and tiny figs a few days ago, and now...

Sure hope these plants will come back this year. Even the azaleas and iris have turned brown, and the leaves on the Rose of Sharon look as though they were frozen and thawed. It's very sad, but not much we can do about mother nature. Even colder temperatures are predicted for Saturday night...28 degrees.

Have not heard anything from the MRI, but I see the orthopedic specialist again April 13th. Guess I will find out all then. I am getting better and I am so thankful for that.

Thank you friends.

Love,
Henny

  2. Morning Henny! So sorry about your hickory and fig trees, maybe they will revitalize! It turned cold here a few springs back when the baby downy woodpeckers came and it frosted really bad and they have never returned. I love the birds! So, I will hope for warmer weather and a healed back for you! Just thinking of you, Terry

  3. Good to hear you are feeling better. Hope the news on the 13th is positive and that nothing drastic needs to be done to rectify the situation----just some more rest for your back and maybe some meds or physical therapy.

Sorry about the hickory tree and fig. Things here are all budded out not so many trees but flowering bushes and such. We have had several below freezing nights but so far everything is managing to stay green. Several more below freezing nights to come this next week and then I hope that this spring will straighten up and fly right!

    1. Oh thank you Vic. Me too! I should find out about going to physical therapy and the injection on the 13th. I've don't remember the cold ever hurting the trees and bushes like it has this spring.

  4. I'm glad you are getting better. That's a funny Amazon order! A lightweight yardstick!
Dang. Too bad about the withered leaves. Boo.

  5. Saw the box and though there may be a dozen of those yardsticks in there. : )
Glad to hear you are improving.
Too bad about the plants. We had more snow!! Crazy weather!!

  6. Ooh dear, I had to laugh at the size of the box.....
I buy from Amazon too, one of the main distribution centers sits just three miles from our home.
When my stove needed a new on/off switch, they sent it in a box big enough for the entire stovetop !
We are under the dreaded freeze warning tonight and Saturday. All the trees and clematis are showing new foliage and probably will be lost.
Hope you get great results on your MRI sweet lady.

  8. It is so sad when things start blooming and then are hit by the frost. Enough of this stuff! Glad your feeling better! Nancy

  9. Killing frosts are very disheartening. We've had 10 days of no frost over night which is not ordinary here.

  10. Too bad about the frost that kind of spoiled your spring. I'm sure the trees will produce more leaves but I don't think the flowers will make a comeback.
It seems like everything we get from Amazon comes in a box that's way bigger than the item. I think your yardstick is the funniest, though! I remember free yardsticks at the county fair and that wasn't that many years ago.

    1. Hey Cynthia. I wonder why no one gives away yard sticks any more. Hope you are enjoying the weekend.

  11. Oh I'm so sorry to see your trees, Henny. How sad. Here in Wisconsin we thought we were in for an early spring too .... and we're getting yet another snow right now as I type. We have about a zillion turkeys in our yard right now scrounging for food. Supposed to be warmer next week. We'll see. Hope things warm up for you soon and everything revives!!!

  12. Wow the cold weather really hurt trees. I don't like it when spring comes in early and then freezing temperatures kill them. My mother in law orders everything from amazon. She loves it! Well I am glad your back is starting to feel better.

    Love you!

    1. Hey sweet Vicki. I've never seen the cold hurt big hardwood trees before. Love you!

  13. That hickory tree sure does look sad. There's probably going to be a lot more of that in the next day or two. Lots of places are going to be below freezing. The white dogwood trees are just getting pretty here. i hate to see them and other things freeze. Sometimes we order things on line because when we consider the time and expense of driving to get it, it's cheaper to order it. I hope you continue to improve and get good news from the MRI. Take good care of yourself.

    1. Hey Peg. Oh the beautiful Dogwoods. We have one pink dogwood and lots of white ones growing wild around the house. I sure hope tonight's cold won't hurt them. Maybe if we can get past the 28 degrees tonight, the weather will warm up. I'm looking forward to hearing what the doctor says this coming Wednesday. Thank you!

  16. Wow that was some freeze you had. Usually the trees up here recover from a frost...but yours don't look so good. He should have ordered several yardsticks! :)

  18. Great to hear you are getting better - woo hoo!! My back is still aching, but also improving....albeit a lot slower than in years past! Hate to see your trees and plants suffering like that - this darned weather this year is just the pits!! Hope they all recover nicely.

  19. Wow, I'm sure Amazon didn't make any money on that order. You would think they could have put the yardstick in a tube instead. Such a waste.
So sad about the frost. I sure hope we don't get any here. Everything seems very early to me, the trees are in full bloom, our fruit trees are covered in blossoms. It will be interesting to see how your frost stricken plants do, I am sure they will recover, the roots are still good.

    1. Hey Karen. I bet it will take quite a while for these plants to look normal again. It was 31 degrees last night! At least not 28 like they predicted.

  20. Dear Henny, very glad to hear that you are beginning to feel better. I know that when spring actually comes to you, you will want to be outside doing things in the garden. I hope the plants that have been frost bitten will recover. Maybe you can use the Amazon packaging to shelter something! We have an old yardstick that may have belonged to Dan's grandfather. "The Lake Shop" Lake Arrowhead, Calif. advertising paint-hardware-household. 5 & 10c gifts, with the phone number 2-1841. It is 1/4" thick! No wonder it has survived. It is on a shelf in my studio, so thanks for the chance to go look at it. I think I should do some painting today!

    1. Thank you Pam. That's so neat to have an antique yard stick. I've never really looked to see how old our broken yard stick is. I will do that. I can remember when phone numbers were four digits.

  21. I am thrilled to hear you are feeling better. Such a shame that plants are been spoilt by Mother Nature and her tricks with frost.

  22. Love that yard stick story. I'm so amazed how much packing Amazon uses on everything except pressure cookers. I ordered one and it came without a single piece of packing in just the original box with a picture on it. I still swear it was because it was a pressure cooker, a tool used to make bombs. Homeland Security is keeping an eye on those perhaps. Trust me, I'm not making a bomb. I actually have no idea why it came with no packing, I just thought it was weird given how they use so much packing.

    1. Linda, that is funny! I had to tell my husband. We ordered a new pressure cooker about a year ago and I can't remember how it was packaged. I bet you are right though about the bomb making. I believe you when you say you're not making a bomb! :)

  24. We have a 48 inch 'yardstick'--guess I should say meansuring stick. LOL It was Roger's grandmother's. Then I have a heavy duty metal 48 inch ruler in the basement. I can use it with a rotary cutter if I had a mat that long.

The 13th is not too far off...

It has been very cold here for us too, not a normal Spring. We had 10 this morning.
