More of our special Christmas week...and a fruit cake recipe

Oh my gosh! I'm back, but where do I begin?

Poppy and I spent most of yesterday taking down Christmas decorations. What a mess that dried out cedar garland made! Yep, that big live cedar garland I was so proud of. We'll be picking cedar out of the carpet for years to come...Holly berries too. :)

Poppy's daughter and her family got here late Saturday the 26th and left on Thursday the 31st. We sure enjoyed having them as it had been four years since their last visit. Windy and Brian took lots of pictures and they  sent most of them to our email...but you know me and my computer skills. I've saved the pictures but can't figure out how get the pictures from saved to my blog. It just absolutely does not work for me.

I do have this great picture to share with you and when I get computer help, will show you the fun Poppy had playing with these sweet grandsons...tackling and rolling around in the leaves, all four of these guys, Dad, Grandpa, Luke, and Jacob, along with Eli. Why I figured Poppy would not be able to walk the next day.

These boys are such a pleasure to be with. Jacob, on the right (above pic) plays the base drum in marching band and he also plays the saxophone in Jazz band. Luke, plays football and basketball.

I got this cute picture of Jacob, Luke, and their Dad making funny faces on the computer and laughing.

What strange weather we had the entire week of Christmas. Very warm and rain every day but one. That one day the sun came out from time to time and the rain stopped and that was the day we all stayed in the back yard.

We were sad to see them leave last Thursday, but Poppy and I plan to go to Missouri to visit them some time this year...after Poppy retires. Speaking of Missouri! While they were here in North Carolina, all that serious flooding was going on all around where they live. Sure hope they find everything safe and okay back at home.

And now...the fruit cake recipe.  This is unbelievably delicious!

1  box Graham crackers (crushed)
1  lb. Marshmallows (cut into pieces)
1  lb. Pecans (cut)
1  lb. Walnuts (cut)
1  lb. Candied Cherries (cut)
1  Fresh Coconut, (grated)
1  Box Dark Raisins
1  Can Eagle Brand Milk

Mix, pack in Graham cracker box lined with wax paper, enough to fold over cake. Tie box together with string and place in refrigerator.

That's it. But it takes a large pan to mix all these ingredients and you have to use your hands. It's a big sticky mess...but absolutely delicious!

Way back when mama used to make this fruit cake, graham crackers came in a two pound box. Now days, package sizes are smaller and prices higher. Guess is all works out though.

Thank you, if you're still here. Hope you didn't completely give up on me. I will be around to catch up. Occasionally, during our week of company, I slipped away and read a blog post or two. I feel like such an outsider now!  :)

Happy New Year!

Love,
Henny

  2. What a beautiful-looking family Henny, such big smiles, I can see why they brought so much fun to your Christmas celebrations.
I love the smell of fresh greenery, but yes it makes a mess once it dries out, I still prefer it to artificial though.
Hope you are having a wonderful New Year, the weather has finally turned cold here in Tennessee, brrr.

I haven't started taking down decorations yet. Maybe tomorrow, maybe Monday. No hurry.
That is a very non-traditional fruit cake recipe! No bake, lots of cake!

  5. Good to hear that your Christmas was an enjoyable one and that your family were able to visit. Too bad the weather didn't cooperate more you all could have had some nice walks in the woods and fishing off the dock.

The graham cracker fruit cake sounds yummy and I've copied it off and will be trying it once I lose some of the weight that I surely must have put on this last 6 weeks or so. Seems like all I have done is eat! Not good.

    1. Oh, I can tell the eight pounds I lost before Christmas is back around my middle. It's hard not eat with company in the house and everybody else snacking. I've tried to cut back since the Jan. 1st. My new year's resolution...as usual.

  6. I'm glad you had such a good time with family. I saw that Brian was wearing a cap from the St. Louis Blues hockey team. I live a few miles from where the Meramec River flooded I-44 and Hwy 141 near St. Louis. I hope their home is safe and they could get home without a detour. Thursday was when all the rivers nearby crested. I love the smell of natural greenery at Christmas, but don't want to deal with the mess any more. Some artificial things are really pretty and I'm happy with that at this point in my life. Good luck with the pictures.

  7. Now that everyone has gone home the house must seem very quiet and empty. Nice to get all the Christmas stuff put away though, isn't it. I did that just today.
How did all your animals fare during the time you were busy with visiting and making food etc.? They(the
animals) must have missed all the attention they normally get. Take care.

I am not very computer savvy either so I never stand your dilema. Chuck is pretty good with computers so he helps me quite often.
    Take care.

  9. Hi Henny! Welcome back. It sounds like you've had a wonderful time visiting with your company over the Holidays. Sure hope their house was still there in Missouri when they got back to it. Your fruitcake recipe sounds delish....I can't picture how it would look, but I like all the ingredients you mentioned. Maybe I'll try it some time! If anybody else does, I hope they'll take a picture of it so we can see it! Looking forward to your great blog in 2016!

  11. It's fun to have company! I hope you get the needles out of your house. It IS a mess. Usually I have two cedar garlands because one dries up and then I get another, but this year I didn't replace the dried up one.
You could just make a new folder on your desktop and then drag the photos from the email to the folder, then import the photos from your desktop to your blog.

  12. Happy New Year! Sounds like you had a wonderful Christmas. Looks like you have two grandsons to be proud of! Coco would be picking the holly berries out of your carpet and eating them! Not sure that would be so good so hope Eli does not decide to do that! Nancy

    1. Eli is pretty good about not eating things like that. I wonder if holly berries are poisonous to dogs. I really think all the berries got vacuumed up. Happy New Year. Thank you Nancy.

  16. Aww, looks like you had a wonderful time over the holidays. So nice that family could come and visit with you. We have just spent this afternoon taking down the Christmas decorations, and while all the greenery was fake, it sheds needles as bad as the real thing. The starlings pooped all over the big ornaments that I had hanging at the sign at the bottom of the driveway. That fruitcake recipe is certainly interesting....:) Happy New Year to you all!

    1. I remember the fake greenery we had hast year falling apart too. Having that many starlings around would mess up everything. Thank you Karen. Happy New Year!!
