My little start at decorating

Guineas are just about the nosiest little critters around...

The picture does not do them justice. I was sitting on the ground working on this wreath when the guineas came home. All sixteen of them. They surrounded me checking things out and darn it again, the camera was not close by. Half the birds wandered off when I got up to get the camera. It was the funniest thing!

Remember all those cedar limbs stored up from the cutting and clearing I did across the road? Well, I made a fourteen foot garland today. Good gosh, was it ever a job. It was heavy too. Had to get Poppy to help me bring it inside and hang it over the mantle. I also started on this big wreath.

For some reason the garland doesn't show up that good in my pictures. Anyhow, it was quite an undertaking and I don't think I will be making and selling these live garlands!! Another one of my big plans gone awry. :)

Poppy brought me a handful of Holly with lots of red berries when he came home from hunting today.

So, this is my little start at decorating for Christmas. Got lots more to do.

Be back soon, hopefully.

Love,
Henny

  1. The garland looks gorgeous, so full and festive hanging above the fireplace.
The berries and holly add that perfect touch of color, and should last the entire month of merriment.
You have so much talent my dear friend.

  2. Your garland is perfect over your fireplace, with all of it's rustic quality. You really know how to do "cabin".

    1. Thank you. I plan to add something to the wreath and leave it where it is. The wreath is made on a huge heavy metal ring with feet and there are three chains hanging from the center. This metal piece came from an old tobacco barn and I have no idea what it was used for. It makes a pretty wreath though.

    1. Thank you! Guineas make me laugh. They are nosy and stick their necks out to check things out.

  5. I made a live wreath last year and now that I have seen your glorious garland I will be making a smaller copy. I like to add quite a bit of Rosemary for the scent and then tuck Holly and Ivy in here and there. I do not have berries on my holly so I add some little red baubles. I do like Guinea fowl, they are nosy and also noisy, we called them the farmyard policemen as they were always on intruder alert and would wake the Geese up if anyone was about.

    1. Pam, what a good idea about the Rosemary. I have plenty of that growing and it would smell good. If you don't mind my copying, I just may bring some inside. Wish I could give your some of this holly. I've never seen so many berries. Farmyard policemen is the perfect name!

  12. Golly, that's certainly more than a LITTLE start! The garland is beautiful and really dresses up your mantle and fireplace. That is a huge wreath----how big across is it? Where are you going to hang it? Hope you have a big secure something to attach it to .

    1. I'll have to measure the wreath. It is made on a huge heavy metal ring that stands on two metal feet. Something that came out of an old tobacco barn. I have no idea what it was used for. It sure makes a pretty frame for a live wreath though. There are three short chains that hang from the top of the ring. I was thinking of hanging something in the middle. ?? Thank you Vic.

I guess its good :O) but I don't think I will be doing much decorating.

  17. I love the cedar! I put some in a bucket close to the hearth last year but it dried out so fast! I bought a live tree this year the first one in almost 15 years

    Love you

    1. Hey Vicki! Andee and Todd bought a live tree this year too. We are thinking about cutting a small cedar from the woods. I'll be in a mess if all this cedar I've brought in dries out and falls everywhere. :) I love the natural things from the woods.

  18. At this time of year I always thing about my grandfather in Oklahoma. He had a holly tree that was as tall as any oak. In December he would always mail us a big box of cuttings to decorate with.

  19. You are amazing and persistent, making that huge wreath and garland! Great job!
Last year I cut some fir and cedar branches and made bundles of them and tried to sell then at the farmers market before Christmas for a couple of dollars. Only sold one, so am not wasting my time on that again. The bags of big pine cones seem to sell okay though.
