It was bound to happen. It was quite a fall I took...in fact, was even airborne for a few seconds, as my feet came completely off the ground before landing kerplunk on my left side in the wet grass. It was all my fault, really it was. Eli is the sweetest, most gentle, kindest dog ever!
We had been romping and playing in the back yard early yesterday morning. This routine is daily. Eli goes in the goat lot while I feed the chickens, let the rooster out, carry BunBun to his play pen, feed the ducks and guineas, let Jewel and her chicks out...then Eli goes for a walk and we play for 30 minutes or so in the back yard.
Poppy came walking down to the pond. All this rain has put the little pier under water again, see the picture with the chairs sitting out in the water, so his plan was to clear the packed leaves from the drain pipe which would let the water flow again.
I clipped Eli's leash on and we walked out on the dam to watch Poppy...the leash was around my left wrist and wrapped...I was relaxed, not conscience of the fact there was a 140 pound animal tied to me. When little Weetie came walking out of the woods at the far end of the dam, Eli, also forgetting that we were tied together, bounded off to meet her. That's when I went airborne and landed hard on my left side. What a sight that must have been. Are you alright, asked Poppy, while I'm half way laughing, moaning and groaning with poor Eli licking my face. It's a scary feeling...that feeling of being all broken up inside.
Poppy got my hand and helped me get to my feet. I could stand, I could walk, I could almost take a deep breath.
My left side, hip bone to my shoulder is sore, maybe even with a cracked a rib. It hurts to take a deep breath, but really I'm fine.
Yesterday turned out to be the most productive day I've had in a long time. The sun was shinning!! Yay!! With a bucket of warm soapy water, I got the greenhouse washed and sparkly clean. Then using the extendable tree limb saw/cutter, I cut down every tree except for three big ones, and every overhanging limb from the ditch and road side across the road, the entire length of our 5-acre property. My reason for doing all this is a story in itself.
Thank you for listening, once again!
Love,
Henny

Oh my goodness, girl, you have to be careful! Glad you are ok!
ReplyDeleteGrace & Peace.
Thank you! I'm getting too old to be falling like that! :)
DeleteWe do have to be careful when having a dog on the leash. They can move pretty fast. Also I don't know if wet leaves were involved in this incident, but they can be very slippery! We are always warned about them on the roads because they can be treacherous. I hope you didn't crack a rib - I understand that can be painful.
ReplyDeleteShirley H.
Hey Shirley! It was wet grass on the dam but I know wet leaves are awfully dangerous. Thank you.
DeleteOuch!! I bet you're thinking that a lot today. Falls tend to hurt more afterward, when the soreness sets in. I'm glad nothing worse happened. Maybe the rain softened the ground a little. Good luck with the rib; that's the kind of thing that hurts even when you're not doing anything because you've GOT to breathe. I looked up treatment for rib injuries, just to see if there's anything that can be done. The list included instructions to ice it regularly the first few days to reduce pain and swelling and take 10 slow deep breaths every hour to keep your lungs clear. I never would have thought of these things. I hope it feels better every day.
ReplyDeleteOh Peg, they sure do. I am sore around my rib cage but I don't think that a rib is cracked. It feels better tonight. Just sore when I take a deep breath. I never would have known what to do for a rib injury. I appreciate the help.
DeleteGoodness gracious! Poor you. My Mum had a similar fall and did end up with a broken rib. Maybe a trip to the doctor would be a good idea. Take care!
ReplyDeleteA broken rib sounds scary. I'm pretty sure now that I didn't break or crack a rib. My rib cage is sore though. Thank you.
DeleteOh no! Poor you! Take it easy, Henny!
ReplyDeleteThank you Pom Pom. I appreciate that.
DeleteOh my, if you feel worse you really must see a Doctor. Sounds like you had quite a day...all that limb trimming:)
ReplyDeleteI had planned to have it checked out if I felt worse today but I am okay. Just sore. Thank you!
DeleteOuch! I hope it heals quickly!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI hope that you get over this fall, I have had a few tumbles, and have the breaks to prove it, and sometimes soft tissue damage is more painful than a broken bone. Rest but do not stop moving altogether and seize up.
ReplyDeleteThank you Pam! Falls are scary, aren't they? I will take your advice.
DeleteOh my goodness. Are you sure you're "fine"? I do hope you just have bruises and soreness and not something actually broken! Maybe a check in with the Dr. would be a good idea, just in case? Good thing that Poppy was around close to help with your predicament.
ReplyDeleteSo good that you got so much done yesterday now you can rest and recuperate. That is what you're doing, right????? I hope so! Take your time getting better, don't rush things.
Oh Vic, you know me! I couldn't wait to get back to cutting tree limbs across the road. I really think my ribs are fine, just sore. When I landed on my side it shoved my arm against my rib cage, or something like that. I can breathe okay today. Thank you!
DeleteOh my I have done it girl, cracked a rib.. torn the cartilage out of my ribs, on ya its not fun at all. You do need to be careful and not be over doing ummm which it sounds like you might be? They (GPs) are strong so very, very strong and they don't even realize it! Keeper has knocked me down by accident, made me loose my footing and fall into the wall rofl ... he just doesn't realize how big or how strong he is and a bump from them is like a all out force from another dog lol.. I can only imagine with you holding the leash and him actually taking off to greet Weetie.
ReplyDeleteI don't romp and play vigorous with Keeper anymore lol... I let honeyman do that. He is bigger and stronger and can take Keepers accidental bumps and knocks lol. They don't send him to the ground like they do me ROFL..
.One thing you might want to check into is a harness for Eli. We use a harness when we put a leash on Keeper. He is very good on a leash but the harness just gives you a bit more control and stability,y plus it makes them very aware they have that harness and leash on them. You will have to go to a pet store to buy it, they wear the very biggest one they sell.Keeper's I can barely get on him, I have bought some strapping to enlarge his as I haven't been able to find a larger harness. Walmart and such do not sell them that big so ya gotta go to a pet store...This way too no choking for them. The leash attaches to their back on the harness. Its a thought for down the road maybe :O).
Hey Texan! You are so right! These big dogs can knock you down, not meaning to. I think Eli sees himself as a little dog like Weetie. He tries to sit in my lap and I get so tickled at him. I really want to check into getting a harness for him. I can see how you would have a lot more control. I hate feeling like I am choking Eli too when he pulls hard on the leash. Thank you. I appreciate to help.
DeleteThat sounds painful. Hope you mend quickly.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much. I'm feeling better tonight...just sore.
DeleteI hope you heal quickly. Your nice dog will keep you company on the sofa. xx
ReplyDeleteThank you. Yes, he wants to be on the sofa any time I am on the sofa...and there's just not enough room for us both! :)
DeleteDear Henny, I know exactly what that feels like. I did the same 5 years ago when Kane pulled me down running towards another dog. Do get lots of rest. There is no point in trying to carry on as if nothing happened. You need sleep and rest and stay put for a week. There's Eli being your nurse. Silly willy.:-)
ReplyDeleteDeb, did you really! My daughter was just telling me this morning the same thing happened to her this week. Her dog took off after a squirrel. Bet it happens to a lot of us! Thank you!
DeleteOh you poor thing, hope you are OK and not in too much pain. Here's hoping you heal quickly.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I've got to catch up with your blog. I'm way behind again. :)
DeleteI am so glad you are ok! My cat ran headlong into my shin the other day and raised a huge goose egg on me. I wondered how her head felt after that! Have a good rest now before you tackle any more projects!
ReplyDeleteOh Terri, that is funny...well not funny about the goose egg on your leg. Wonder what in the world made her do it. I bet her head felt about like your leg did. Thank you!
DeleteAww Henny, I've had the same thing happen to me, only it was a horse that I was tethered to.....
ReplyDeleteI hope you heal quickly, take some time out to rest.
Hugs,
~Jo
Oh goodness. A horse! You could have been hurt really bad. Hope you were not hurt. Thank you Jo.
DeleteOW!!! My husband was chasing our cat, tripped, fell on a pinecone and cracked a rib, it hurt forever.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness. Don't the craziest things happen to all of us! I really think now that I am just sore, and my rib is fine. Thank you!
DeleteI do hope you're alright. Not much they can do for a rib. Know you are not alone. I have some pretty creative falls, too.
ReplyDeleteHey Gail! When you live out in the country like you and I, and always building or moving rocks or some other big job, it's easy to trip or fall. I tell myself all the time to be careful! Thank you!
DeleteOuch! I'm glad you could still laugh. After that you did all that tree trimming? You are tougher than I am! I do hope you are feeling better tonight.
ReplyDeleteHey Cynthia! I had to laugh. I felt like Poppy was trying hard not to laugh. It must have been a funny sight! Yes I worked non stop until 3:00 cutting trees and limbs. I do feel better. Thank you!
DeleteAwwww, I'm sorry you had a wipe out. Hopefully soon on the mend!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! It was a wipe out! :)
DeleteI assume all of that work was before you took a flying leap! I hope you mend fast. If you still have trouble breathing maybe you should see a doctor?
ReplyDeleteOh, and I want to know the story behind all the tree cutting.
Thank you Linda! No, I did all that work after the fall. I'm feeling much better, just sore. I'll have to post about my tree cutting. :)
DeleteOuch! I wish you a speedy recovery.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Red!
DeleteOh No....I'm so sorry to hear that you fell so hard. So do you have a cracked rib? That sounds just awful. And did you do all that cutting and trimming and cleaning after you fell? If so, that is amazing. Praying that you feel better soon and go to the doctor if need be.
ReplyDeleteThank you Diane. I'm sure the fall just jarred my rib cage and didn't break anything. I am sore but could not have done all that work if a rib was broken. :)
DeleteI am sorry that you hurt yourself!! Hope your mending soon. I do hope all that work you did was before the fall!!! Nancy
ReplyDeleteHey Nancy. No, I did the work after falling. I'm crazy that way. :) Falling on my left side I think shoved my arm against my rib cage. It was hard to take a deep breath at first, but I'm okay. Thank you!
DeleteOh Henny Penny, I'm so sorry you fell. I'm such a Klutz that I always seem to have various bruises but I can't blame my dog. It's me moving too darn quickly. You'd think we'd learn, huh? Do take it easy ( I suspect you won't.) At least be sure to take something for the pain so you can sleep at night. (On your RIGHT side).
ReplyDeleteHey Granny Marigold! Yes, you would think we would learn! :) My daughters warn me all the time to be careful climbing up that ladder, moving those heave cinder blocks, or all the other big jobs I try to do myself. I need to slow down too. Thank you!
DeletePraying you heal quickly. God bless. ♥
ReplyDeleteThank you Linda. I appreciate that.
DeleteI have cracked a rib or two in my days . mostly whilst riding horses . OUCH ! I know it is sore and tender . you poor thing I do hope you mend well and soon . get plenty of R&R and just take it easy !
ReplyDeleteOh my, so you have actually cracked a rib. I'm pretty sure I had a cracked rib several years ago because I actually heard the crack when it happened. It was terribly painful. This time I'm sure it's just a bruised rib cage. Thank you! :)
DeleteHenny! I want you to be more careful, girl... I still got to get down there to see you and apparently take care of you and keep you out of trouble! Please be careful. You got a beautiful dog but he is way bigger than you.. Love to you and yours, of course, and your farmette is beautiful. XOXO Terry
