A little snow

We woke up to snow this morning...as mama would say, "such as it is".  I remember how much mama loved seeing the snow fall.  We lived only a few miles apart, but she would call and say, Melba, is it snowing there?"  When it snowed, mama would either parch peanuts in the oven or make a pan of fudge...or both!

Yesterday was warm and sunny.  This morning, 35 degrees and snowing!  It is now 10:00 am and the snow is gone, all melted!! This is North Carolina!

Trying hard here to get a good picture of the Cardinals.  Half of them fly away when they see me, but several keep their place in line waiting to get to the feeders...

Well, you all know Walmart!! The store we can't live with and can't live without! Yesterday I found a great deal on sunflower seeds.  A 40 pound bag for 18.97! The heaviest darn 40 pound bag I have ever tried to put in the car.  So, I get home, open the bag, anxious to fill all the feeders, and the sunflower seeds are all wet and have sprouted inside the bag. This explains the weight!  And probably the great deal!  Now this morning that heavy, awkward bag, has got to be returned to Walmart...eight miles away.  I dare not interrupt anything by asking a clerk for help with the heavy bag.  :)

Anyway, looks like the sun is coming out.  I am excited about working outside again.  The big mess of downed trees and limbs on the left side of the yard is calling  me.  Got to hurry off to Walmart and get back.

Thank you for visiting.

Love,
Henny Penny

  1. We got a bag of those sunflowers seeds at our local walmart did not have any trouble with them so sorry you did. We have had a lot of red birds this year to. We have also had a lot of blue jays which I have not seen in around her in a while. Our bird feeders are always full with all kids of bird. We bought some thistle for the thistle feeder but have not seen many birds on it. Oh well. I wish we would get some snow!! I love snow!!
    Love you, Vicki

    1. The Blue Jays are beautiful too! We have two that come in to eat. Blue Jays, to me, sound like a car horn blowing. Love, Henny

  2. Those beautiful red cardinals look like ornaments in the trees! I have a much smaller group, about 6, visiting my feeders regularly. They are such a welcome sight in the gray weather we have been having.

  4. Dear Henny,
Your cardinals are lovely! We frequently have a few, but nothing like your 'college' of them. Impressive.

Parching peanuts and making fudge sounds like just the thing. I would be in trouble in the north lands if I did that every time it snowed. Ha. I will save it for an occasional treat. Thanks for the great idea.

My dear Mama still says, 'such as it is'. She usually says it in reference to something fabulous she has prepared for us to eat. She will sweetly offer it, we will be suitably impressed, and she will modestly say, 'such as it is'. Makes me smile, every time. As I don't get to see her nearly often enough, it's a good thing I can read your blog; which also usually prompts a smile.

    You're a keeper.
    Love you,
    Jen

    1. That's so sweet that your Mother says "such as it is" too. It was usually before a meal that mama said it. Yes, you folks up north would be eating peanuts and fudge every day! :) Thank you Jen. Love, Henny

  5. Always frustrating to think you are getting a bargain, and then find out it really isn't. Quite often it isn't worth the time and gas to return it for me, as generally it is lower priced items, and I'd have to drive 20 minutes to get there. I might have fed those sunflower seeds to the chickens:)

  6. I'm glad I don't need to depend on Wal-Mart, but I would love to be able to have those lovely red birds in my yard,

    1. We don't have a lot to choose from here. Two grocery stores, three drug stores, and Walmart!

Enjoy seeing your gorgeous cardinals. We get a smattering but in the winter the woodpeckers are more bountiful.
OK, all I've got to say about the Walmart story is pooey! There's one about 10 minutes from our house and I will not shop there!!

    1. Janet, I didn't realize this comment was here. I need to pay attention! :) Pooey is right!! I hauled that heavy bag back to walmart and traded it. The new bag is fine.
