Restless

Do any of you ever want to just pack up and move away?  Not even say good bye to friends and neighbors...just sorta disappear and start over!!!  Is that normal thinking??

I may have inherited some of this thinking from my daddy's side of the family.  Daddy had seven brothers and two sisters...You may remember, mama had seven sisters and two brothers.  Anyway, one of daddy's brothers was known for just disappearing...one never knew where he might show up, or when he might come strolling back in at home.  Daddy used to tell us about when they were boys, working in the field.  Occasionally, they would hear a train whistle blow in the distance...well this one brother would leave his hoe in the field, take off running and catch that train.  He would be gone for weeks at a time!!

There was another story I remember about this rambling brother.  We were living down in Summerville, South Carolina when my uncle showed up at our house.  He wanted mama and daddy to take him home, to Grandma's house...way up near Sanford, North Carolina.  The story goes, we did pack up and make that trip to take him home, probably a 4 hour drive.  I can't remember whether or not we spent the night at grandma's, but when we got back home to Summerville, this same uncle was sitting on our front porch waiting for us.

I seriously have a touch of this "urge to ramble" in my blood.  Funny, the definition of "ramble" is, to move aimlessly from place to place.  Guess at my age I had better stay put.  Right now, packing up and moving to the mountains sounds mighty good!!! :)

My mood probably has something to do with this time of the year.  The yard is an ugly mess and it's hot and humid outside.  Just after cutting all those trees, we went through that long rainy period and couldn't work outside.   Those same trees are still on the ground!! To add to the problems, in late July and August  we are infested with those tiny, tiny ticks...I mean millions of the tiny biting, blood sucking creatures.  You won't know you've walked into these ticks until you start stinging and itching...look down and your socks are crawling with these things.  I have had as many as fifty bites at once.  It takes a magnifying glass to see that these truly are ticks!!!  At this point, I welcome our first frost!!!

On at happier note, there was another unusual bird at the pond this morning.  Of course it was some type of water bird.  The ducks were interested and swam out for a better look.  This bird has a long pointed beak and red on the back of it's head and neck...sorry I couldn't get a better picture.  Having a pond in the back yard is fun and attracts lots of wildlife.

Not much of a post!!!  Thank you if you've stayed this long.  I am truly thankful that we have this little home and yard and most of all, our health.  I will try to hang on...and just hope that I don't hear a train whistle blowing out there somewhere!!!

Love,
Henny Penny

  1. Dear Henny,
If you turn up missing, we'll know what happened! ;)
    (Insert Johnny Cash's song, 'I Hear The Train A Com'in...' )
It is a perfectly natural inclination to want to roam every now and then. It is nice to take a little road trip too. I find that new scenery renews the spirit as well as bringing new appreciation for what one has at home. Good to go, good to return. :)
Those ticks sound vicious. Do you have earwig bugs down there?

    1. Jen, that is so funny! Wish I had thought of "I Hear The Train A Com'in", does that not just fit my post?? I need to look up earwig bugs. I don't know if we have them or not. I have heard of earwig bugs. Do you have them?? Thank you...

  2. Dear Hen! A ramblin'rose is what I hear playing in the background, was that Johnny Horton? I remember hearing that often, as my own mother was actually a ramblin' rose, she left us with relatives a bunch, I don't how much that affected us, but ... your home place is lovely, make a place for me a travel trailer, thanks! Anywhoo, do not come to the Mountains just yet. It is over 85 to 90 almost every day and humidity is 900% and we are moldy and grouchy. Yes maam. Hot, grouchy mountain folk - except those with central air.

Are those deer ticks biting you? I used to go to TN to see some folks and they had a beautiful dog that almost had her ears chewed off in about 20 minutes when she got a bunch of those on her. No wonder you are wanting to ramble if you have to pick those off! They scarred her ears for life.

A little ramble wouldn't hurt you none. Why don't you ramble down to SC and put your little toes in some ocean water and enjoy yourself and Poppy one weekend.. The night 'bugs' and katydids are singing the fall song in my back yard, none to soon. Then I can find something else to gripe about. Love Ya! Terry

    1. Dear Terry,

A ramblin' rose sounds pretty good at times, but I'm too scared of everything to get out rambling too much!! :) Being with relatives must not have affected you badly...you seem like such a very nice person...one I would love to know. We could probably squeeze in a travel trailer!!!

I think these may be deer ticks. It's like they are born or hatched ??? this time of year. We have never seen anything like it. But it happens every year.

Wouldn't it feel good to walk in the water at the beach? Guess we'll put off a trip to the mountains for now. Wait til I tell Poppy what you said about the weather!!!

      Love,
      Hen :)

  3. Henny, I know this does not pertain to this post - but how is FiFi Ling Ling doing? Love & Hugs - Terry

    1. Terry, this is so funny! I started to write FiFi, and I thought, FiFi, FiFi, is that her name??? I had to go back and look and it's Fiona Ling Ling. Don't even know my own duck's name!! :) She is really growing and beginning to look more like a male muscovy. There is something different about her (or him). The other ducks waddle around, she waddles a few steps and sits down then waddles a few more steps. She is a sweet little duck and is not so afraid of me now.

I read the sweet comment you left Lynn. Thank you, she needed that. She loves you too, she has told me so.

      Love,
      Henny

  4. I know Henny...I should call Fiona Ling Ling by her name, I was just in hurry... I hope she is okay and will grow up to be a big duck!

I have been following Lynn's blog a long time. She deserves the best and she has the best Mama, too, so I know she will be okay.

    Happy Sunday.. Terry

  5. Oops! I can be so dumb!! I like FiFi Ling Ling :) Lynn is a very special person. For sure, she does not deserve some things she has had to endure lately. Lynn has such a kind heart. She speaks of you as a good friend.
