It's Raining Again

Poppy is working today. I am home alone.

It's raining, as usual. That's okay but around lunch time friends, the weather people say we could have severe storms. Severe Storms!

Duck number two enjoying the rain
Storms scare me! Those of you who have followed my blog for a while know that. Oh, I've posted a few stories about running from storms. I kept a mental list of places to hide.

. Hospital waiting room
. Library
. Goodwill Store
. Dollar General Store

The hardest part was timing it right...How to get in the car and get into town and in my safe place before any lightning or thunder arrived. We're about seven miles outside of town.

Felt safest in the hospital waiting room. One time, in Goodwill, I must have looked at every blouse on every rack, while waiting for a storm to pass.

Soggy front yard
The scariest, but funniest, time was when I dashed into the Dollar General store during a storm. Even I laughed, later. My timing was off and I arrived at the store just as the storm hit! I jumped out of my car, and ran for the door through the rain, thunder and lighting. Just as I reached the door, a gush of wind blew both front doors open, and friends, all I could see were colored plastic kiddie pools, beach balls, flip flops, and hula hoops going air born and filling the parking lot. But you know what? Somehow, I made it through all the plastic flying around, the clerks and the customers and found my way to the back of the store. Bet those folks thought I was in a mighty big hurry to shop.

Guineas are terrible at finding a safe place in a storm

Soggy back yard
Ducky Lucky swimming in the muddy water
Daffodils blooming too early
and now they're saying the temperature will drop to 24 degrees early Saturday morning.

The little pear tree, I was so in hopes would grow a pear this year, is about to bloom. Guess that settles that for another year.

It is getting close to lunch time now, but I'm staying put! Thank you for listening. Eli and Weetie, and the cats, might need me, so I won't run and hide this time. :)

Oh, I was looking for pictures earlier and came across one you've just got to see...

This was along about the time little Smokey began trusting us enough to stay. You know, someone had thrown him out and he followed the guineas home. He was alone and hungry for days before finding us.  Eli took little Smokey under his wing. I sure love that little fellow, well, big fellow now.

Thank you so much, well, maybe you're still here.

Thank you to a new follower too. Hope I haven't scared you away.

Love,
Henny

  1. I sure hope your storms aren't too bad. I can understand the fear. I used to be terrified of tornadoes when we lived in the midwest. Now though, except for windstorms, I've come to love thunder and lightening. We have so many tall evergreen trees that when they start blowing back and forth can be scary, but I love to be in the camper when it rains and thunders.
I think it might be around noon for you now so I will be saying some extra prayers for you and that you stay calm. Love that photo of Eli and Smokey too.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  2. Rain sure doesn't take long to make everything muddy and sodden. I hope the storm doesn't dump yet more rain on you. Storms scare me too especially wind storms because of the very tall pines/cedars that run all along the back of our lot ( but not on our side). If they'd come crashing down it would be a disaster.
Stay calm and make a cuppa. Or maybe have a stiff drink...then you won't care if the storm rages. *smile*

  3. Henny, I think of you every time we have bad storms blow through, mostly because they make me a Nervous Nelly too, especially when the dreaded tornadoes are forecast, of which we have already been under the warning this month.
I can't help but laugh at your Dollar General entrance, large and loud :)
Once we were under a tornado warning, and my daughter had disappeared in the bathroom, when I opened the shower curtain, she had four Yorkshire Terriers, a cat, and a budgie in a cage, all covered with blankets. She was six years old at the time, and apologetically said " Mum, I love you, but there's no room for you ", we laugh several times at that memory.
Hope you have a lovely Valentine's Day dear friend.
    Hugs,
    ~Jo

  4. We woke up to -15 degrees this morning and it dropped 2 more degrees after I got my tea and breakfast. It's now a balmy -6 degrees. It is suppose to get to 1 degree for a high and it will drop again tonight and maybe get into the teens tomorrow. The sun is shining and gives an allusion of warmth, but still appreciated. We went many days with no sun up here in Minnesota as did other places. Saturday is supposed to be above freezing with party sunny skies. Hope the prediction is on the low end and maybe will get to the mid to upper 30's. ;) The next worry here will be flooding due to all the snow in some areas, and high rivers from last Fall. There have been ice dam issues already due to a couple of fluke days in the 40's. I also do not like storms, especially if I'm alone. We have 4 cats and I can't imagine trying to get them down the basement by myself as they are not all on friendly terms. Prayers that it will pass you by with no damage and not too much rain. Ranee (MN)

  5. Storms scare me also. I pray your storms aren't too bad today. I just checked the weather for here to see if we were going to get any cold weather, and we're not. Right now at 3:06 pm EST it is 84 degrees, sun is shining brightly and the a.c. is on. ;-) I weed wacked, used the hedge trimmer, pole cutter, clippers and raked out front along the sidewalk, praying for protection. The road I live on is 5 lanes and 45 mph is the speed limit, although faster speeds happen all the time. I was so glad to be done with that bit of work. Then I went to the bank and grocery store, came home fixed lunch, took a nap and I'm so stiff and sore from this morning's work I'm hobbling around.

Love you dear Henny and pray that all is well and stays well for you ~ FlowerLady

    1. Hello Lorraine, I follow your blog and just wanted to say: That sounds like a lot of work! Hope you had a good night's sleep, at least. It was -30°C here, yesterday...I cannot wrap my mind around the concept of heat and sunshine right now! Hope you get to rest from all the yard work these next few days : )

  6. It sure does look soggy there! I hope you don't get a bad storm. I understand how storms can scare you. Henny that is just the cutest picture of Eli and Smokey! Smokey looks so tiny and seems to love playing with Eli. Eli is such a sweet boy to be so good to Smokey. You take care and stay dry!

  7. I laughed so hard at your story about your arrival at Dollar General! I think I feel safer at home than those places. In Minnesota we had a basement where we went when the storm sirens blew. I’m not quite sure what to do here. Hide in the bathtub with Bob the BorderCollie I guess! I have my fingers crossed for your pear tree. We will have to move our citrus trees back inside the sun room. We put them out for the bees to do their work as they are just loaded with blossoms.

  8. Hi Henny...oh, your stories are always the best. lol
And look at little Smokey. Oh my goodness...cutest photo ever. He sure lucked out when he made the decision that saved his life. Imagine him out for days and nights that young with wildlife around. :-( Sending love to all.

  9. We have been having rain all week, but no storms. Tomorrow it will be very cold. I cannot wait until warmer weather. I had a friend that was afraid of storms and she would come over to our house when Her husband was out. I understand you.

  10. Your ground looks so soggy and waterlogged, and I guess it is worse now if you have had another storm pass through (I hope you survived it okay). Mxx

  11. Oh, bless your heart, HP!! I'm so sorry you're scared of storms. When I was a younger woman I would go out in them -- I loved to stand in the rain and feel the hard wind with it. I don't mind thunder, especially the low, very long rolling thunder. Not fond of lightning. But I am surprised that you get INTO YOUR CAR and drive elsewhere, away from the safety of home, in order to get to a larger building with people. That's very interesting. Driving around in a storm scares me much more than being at home.

Hope your storm wasn't too bad.
    I like a good storm. :)

  21. Henny, who would think having guinea hens would pay off in the cat rescue part!
And for Smokey to go from chickens for protection to Eli, and Eli must be a big
softie in more ways than one.
I have 6 inches of snow and it is 15 today and to be 4 tonight. So I enjoyed seeing
the daffodils blooming. Gives me hope that winter will be over in Ohio in about 2 more
    months.

  25. Hilarious post! You tell a good story and I just wish I'd known this about you when I was in the throes of discovering my phobia of rodents! You know how one feels so alone in their suffering? Lol. Glad you can laugh about it, as I do about my own. A Brit In Tennessee's story also made me laugh!! But I really hope the storm passed quickly and it wasn't too awful. Hats off to you for choosing to stay put, this time, and face your fear. It isn't easy! Love all the photo shares(the guineas, Haha!)and especially Smokey's. Happily, he found his way to you. Many blessings to you!

  26. Great post, Hennie! I hide under the covers or if I can, in a store as well! You are not alone in your fear of thunderstorms. My dogs are the worst, though, they crawl in under anything or under the covers with me. Thanks for telling us your safe places! That water is mighty high in that pond, hope you don't float away.
