Birthday, and a bird story

Gosh, I was all prepared to show you the changes made in the teeny tiny greenhouse, but then Poppy reminded me...

Guess who turns six today? Recognize this little ball of fur?

It's Eli!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ELI!

Seems like just yesterday we were bringing him home...

leaving behind, eight little brothers and sisters.

So many new and strange things to discover, outside that big red barn where Eli was born.

Growing up too fast...

and a big boy here...

but never too big for my teddy bear...

and turning six years old today...

Sorry for the long face. Eli and I feel about the same today. You may can tell from the picture, it's raining again! Raining and windy, again! Very dreary, and we both want to be outside!

and a sad little story that ends well...

Saturday, a beautiful Cardinal flew into the kitchen window. It hit very hard, fell to the ground and was lying there dying, probably in shock.
Poppy heard the noise, ran outside and found the bird. He cupped his hands around it to keep it warm and safe until the bird began to get it's senses back. Poppy carefully sat it on a bird feeder and watched it for the longest time, until it flew away.
all of the bird's tail feathers fell out, you can tell in the first picture. But, it survived and was back at the bird feeders yesterday and today, several times.

Hope I didn't overdo the Eli pictures. He sure is a sweetie pie!

Love,
Henny

  2. Happy Birthday Eli! A memory came up on FB today for me, of my son's dog Tucker as a little puppy. Another cute hairy furball, although not all white like Eli! Glad the cardinal survived. I find that more birds do than not. I put them in a safe place, and when I check later they are usually gone. Rain....well we had loads of that, and right after winter hit with snow and very cold temperatures for us.

  3. Oh, Eli, you were so cute, and you still are! Happy Birthday, birthday boy. And such a happy ending to the cardinal story. The tail feathers are expendable — happily, they will grow back!

  4. Happy Birthday, Eli. You are most certainly a very handsome boy.

I wonder why the Cardinal's tail feathers fell out. Strange. But I'm glad he survived.

  5. Aww, Happy Birthday sweet Eli, he's always been such a handsome gentleman !
How compassionate that Poppy cuddled the Cardinal and allowed him to regain his senses, the fact that he was able to hold him inside his hands, incredible.
    They are beautiful birds...

Right now a mysterious tale is swirling around Bird World of a kind, rescuing giant with no feathers and an invisible force field...

  9. Happy 6th Birthday Eli! Oh those pictures! They are all so cute and he was just a little furry cuddle buddy as a pup! Eli's little family is cute and there's so many - wow! His Mamma must have been one tired Mamma dog with nine babies. Poppy is sure sweet to help that Cardinal. Why, he may have even saved it's life. Give Eli some birthday love form me!

  13. Happy Birthday to Eli. He's such a beautiful boy. That cardinal is sure lucky that Poppy heard it hit and found it. I asked Google about its tail feathers and learned that if a bird's tail feathers are pulled out, they will grow back quickly and that the bird can fly well without them. Whew! I hope you have sunshine tomorrow. I know that I'm ready for it. We got almost 4.5 inches of rain over 2 days and then over 2 inches of snow on top of that! So many places are being hit with devastating weather, I tell myself that it could be a lot worse. Give Eli and hug for me.

    1. Hey Peg, I was thinking about you yesterday. It's been a while. I'm glad to know the Cardinal will grow it's tail feathers back. 4.5 inches of rain is a lot! A thunderstorm and heavy rain woke us up at 3:00 am this morning. We've still got two more days of rain coming, according to the weatherman. You are right, it could be so much worse, so I hate to complain. Thank you for commenting.

  32. Happy Birthday Eli!! Wow how did he get to be six years old. That don't seem possible. We have had red birds do this at our house. Love you bunches

  33. The last bird to fly into one of our windows and die was a dove and well, I ate it. All 4 bites were very good. I have since taped an old feed sack over the window so that doesn't happen again. Friends with a Great Pyr came over once and the dog was tall enough that he could graze the kitchen counter. Good memory.

  34. What a cutie! 💖 So glad the Cardinal only lost his tail feathers and not his life with Poppy's help.

  36. Eli is beautiful! He looks like he has eyeliner around his eyes. It's been dreary here also. Not windy though. I wish it was. Good news about the Cardinal. It happens here. I still have leaves on my door off the porch and so far no bird has flown into it.
Still want to see your greenhouse and look forward to that.

As to the Cardinal, one flew into Sarah's window when LOrelei was little...maybe 3 or 4...I quick ran and got it, hoping it would be okay. It died, and she just bawled...
