A little silliness

What's in the old cupboard today...

Friends, I simply cannot believe that we are through with August and September, and into October! and all this without one bit of fall-like weather! Not one bit! It is hot and humid here!

Unbelievable, but in ten days, Monday October 15th, good Lord willing, Shelby and I will be on our way to the North Carolina State Fair once again. The day we both so look forward to. We joke about "not" going to the Fair on a Tuesday. Tuesday is senior citizens day. :)

hanging around the hobby horses three years ago. well, I'm taking the picture and that's Shelby in the green shirt. wish I COULD say that's me in the pink shoes

and I'm here to tell you, "we are riding those hobby horses".  Oh wait! Didn't I say that last year, and the year before? Well, you won't catch me dragging back this year all shame-faced, and whining that I lost my nerve. maybe you will check back after the 15th.

back to the old cupboard...There is a funny story about this stuff. The first of the week, Poppy carried the trash to the nearest convenience center. He called me from there and said, "Mel, somebody left a box here with lots of little baskets and artificial flowers, candles, and even a little shelf. Do you want them?" I'm thinking to myself, this sounds just like a box of stuff I donated to Goodwill a few weeks ago. "Oh, bring it on", I said. So, it was fun going through the stuff and I did keep those colored leaves and the one little basket.

Betcha not many husbands bring their wives gifts from the dumpster. :)

"Yes, and it has been told that Poppy brought home a tiny kitten once, from that very same dumpster. Is that true"? Is is true, Smokey! That would be Dumperoo, and that is why his real name is Dumpster Kimball, but we call him Dumperoo, or woo woo, and sometimes Poppy even call him Rumperdo.

and this is he!

Enough silliness for today. I just used our last package of frozen persimmons and made this persimmon pudding. My niece Vicki has the biggest persimmon tree ever! She gathers the persimmons in the fall, mashes the pulp out then sells the pulp, two cups to a package...just right for making a pudding. Looks like Shelby and I need to take another trip to see Vicki.

Thank you friends!

Love,
Henny

Oh, thank you to my new followers.  And, a note to "Far Side". A scarecrow is exactly what we need for the fall display. Thank you!

  1. Hello Henny! Oh, fun! The fair! You must ride the merry-go-round. You MUST eat some cotton candy. You must consume a funnel cake. Oh, I do love Dumperoo. He's a Timothy twin.

  2. As a matter of fact, my Mister brings me "gifts" from the dumpsters, road side pickup, trash cans...anywhere he finds stuff I might like. I love it. I'm not a fancy or materialistic person so this is my kind of gift! Cute cupboard display and such a sweet kitty! I wish I had a spoon. I would dive into that pudding! Or try, anyway!

    Grace & Peace,
    Pam

  3. Take a look at the scarecrow that has been with us for about 11 years. He's on my latest posts. He would be so easy to make for someone with sewing skills as you've got.

Henny, I love your little cupboard full of cute fall things! Also happy to know the story behind the name Dumperoo…...I always wondered about that! You know we will be expecting a pic of you and Shelby riding those carousel horses at the fair now!!! Can't wait to see it. It's such fun to do! Enjoy.

  6. Oh Henny! I love you! I have a bunch of persimmons again this year and I would love to see you and Aunt Shelby. I hope you get brave enough to ride the hobby horses. I know how it is to be scared it is not fun. Thanks for the kind comments on my blog. Love you bunches!

  7. You may not have Fall weather but your cupboard sure looks right for the season! How thoughtful of Poppy to bring you the "dumpster stuff". I would hope my DH would do likewise but it's never happened so far.

I have no idea what a persimmon tastes like but that pudding looks so tasty!!!
I hope you and Shelby have a ball at the fair. Make sure to get pictures.
Do you ever ask strangers to take pictures so you both can be in them?

  9. I remember last year when you said you and Shelby would ride the Merry-Go-Round. Well, this is the year - you will do it! If you don't want to climb up on a horse they usually have a seat you can ride in don't they? Either way, it's going to be fun!

I love that picture of Smokey - he is showing some attitude! Your Fall decorations are beautiful especially in the cupboard.

  11. Hi Henny- Yes, some years back I asked Chris (my Partner) if she would like a 'Statue' for Christmas - "Yes-that would be OK"...so I took Chris around the Block to pick up a 3ft tall 'Greek Goddess' Statue from the curb side...The statue now resides on our back veranda and Chris is very pleased with it. It is amazing what people put out on the curb for the Local Council truck to pick up for dumping. I've passed up some very good furniture items from the curb side- simply because my Car isn't big enough - be better if I had a Ute or flat bed truck (LOL). All the best to you Henny for the North Carolina Fair. Cheers. KEV.

  12. I hope you do decide to ride on the Merry-go-Round, what fun! Either way, have a wonderful time. Your autumnal decorations gladden the eye, they are lovely. Smokey steals the show though.

  13. Love the little cupboard, and the story of Dumperoo. The best present my hubby bought me was a load of well rotted manure for my veggy garden. It was a new garden and once we had cleared all the rubbish the soil was quite poor. I was a happy bunny.

  14. You are missing out on so much fun not riding the carousel horse, heres hoping you find the courage. Loved the story of Poppy and his finds at the dump.

  15. Oh, so that's the story behind Dumperoo's name! I have wanted to ask about it but felt shy to.
I was snickering as I read about Poppy phoning you from the dumpster-- my dad is so embarrassed by my mom's penchant for trash hunting, but he would feel bad if he didn't tell her, haha. You have a good husband indeed.

Go on the ride with your sister, Henny! I was looking forward to attending our local fair this summer with my 7 year old niece but I got the dates wrong and missed it, oops. How fun to go with your sister, though....we never went when we were little, this would be a fun thing to do together.

Hot and humid in October? I don't think I'd enjoy that. It's our Thanksgiving Day weekend, so I'll wish a happy and blessed weekend.

  16. Whey~Hey....Pussy~cats..At Last...! 😺
    HeHe!
What's the meaning of the phrase 'Hobby-horse'?

English mummers, Morris dance teams and minstrel groups began
performing with characters (often children) dressed in wickerwork
and cloth costumes, made to look like stylised horses - not altogether
unlike the present-day pantomime horses. These 'hobby-horses', which
took their name from the Irish breed, are still to be seen as part of
the English folk tradition, notably at the annual 'Obby 'Oss festival,
celebrated each May Day in Padstow, Cornwall....

    AND...Children..
Played at riding a wooden hobby horse made of a straight stick with
a small horse's head (of wood or stuffed fabric), and perhaps reins,
    attached to one end....
    Did l ever have a hobby~horse...NO! I had the real thing..well..a pony
in fact..! Long! Long! Time ago now! :).

Must confess..not terribly keen on fun fairs..those silly rides go
up and down, or round and round..No! Not for me, and neither was
my daughter in growing, we have the same opinion of zoos and
    circuses...! Ban them! :(.

Lovely seeing Dumperoo and Smokey..as a pussy~cat person, l can never
get enough of the feline of the species...
    As l always say..."Dogs have owners, cats have staff" 🐱 😸 😻 🐱

  17. Ah! Someone else mentioned the scarecrow! Wonderful!

We have friends who also gather from dumpsters a little. The husband stops by the cemetery and looks at the nice plastic flowers being thrown out. He brings the best ones home to his wife, and she uses them to decorate. A bit morbid, but quite good recycling. Your animals are so adorable!!

If I were going to the state fair with you, I would most certainly ride the carousel (one of the few rides my tummy will still allow), and I'm drag you on there with me, haha!!

  18. Ha, love the name of the cat. Nice display too. I have no space for such stuff, and this year I do need a new door wreath. We tossed our old one out last year.

  21. I love that your husband dumper dives for you, LOL. Even bringing sweet little kittens home :) Fall is certainly in the air here and yesterday and all last night we had rain . . . rain, rain glorious rain. We have not seen rain in months, maybe since May. The air smells heavenly this morning. I came over hoping to see your stings of red peppers, maybe next post. Have fun at the fair . . . we all want to see a photo of you and Shelby riding those pretty horses :)
    Great post!

  23. I love how you have your cupboard, looks so pretty and festive! That first picture belongs in a magazine!! I've never tried persimmons I dont think? I'm not find of fruit but oh wow, I sure do LOVE VEGETABLES!! Our fair is coming up real soon too, and we love to go. I always ride the carousel with our little granddaughter but I dont get on the horse, I just hold on next to her. It's probably our favorite thing to do there, and we ride the Christmas one every year at the Christmas festival of lights. I love merry go rounds---they are so pretty and so historic!

  28. You should absolutely ride the hobby horses this year! Oh my, the summer we have had and are still having! The weatherman said after Wednesday we would drop down to the 70's instead of the 90's. I sure hope he's right. I love your cupboard and you have it decorated so pretty!

  29. I laughed at the comment "gifts from hubby from the dumpster." Remember the cat plate he found and thought of me. hahaha! I loved that. It's amazing though what some people will throw out.And I'm so happy he brought Dumperoo home. Bless his heart. I am heading out soon for the big Thanksgiving dinner at my son's home. But first I think I should do a few laps around the property before pie time. Sending hugs to all and a sweet one for little Smokey. xoxoxox
