Mystery solved

Remember when I built that brush pile inside the chicken lot...a place for the hens to hang around, and hide under...

well, it sure is working out fine. This was early morning too, just barely light outside.

and look who gets the seat at the top, of course. He doesn't have a name yet, he was hatched just this past spring. Poppy says we need to find him another home, but I think not. Why, every teeny tiny farm needs a rooster!

We haven't heard a rooster crow at the crack of dawn since "Big Boy" left us.

The mystery was solved when I cut into one of the melons from the teeny tiny garden...

Poppy was right, it is a citron melon.

Sure was hoping the seeds would be the pretty red kind.

like these from three years ago...
Funny how some of the melons have the red seeds and some the tan color.

and...
Four little jars of citron preserves, put up by me! Whew! I'm not much of jelly maker, but darn it, hopefully, it's not too late to learn!

I am already thinking about next year's garden. Shelby gave me a jar of her pickled okra and a jar of bread & butter pickles she made, and both were delicious.

Wanted to show you Heidi and how much weight she has gained...

Poppy says I over feed all the animals. :( Her fur has gotten all soft and fuzzy. She feels like a giant powder puff. Such a sweetie pie.

Then there is this little pig...

I'm afraid both Heidi and Rosie have gained a little too much weight. Must be something in the air around here.

Hard to believe another day has come and gone. Here it is bedtime once again. Hope to be back soon.

Love,
Henny

  2. It's hard to not feed our sweetie all they want. That's way my Butchy is overweight. I've never seen one of these melons, but then I'm sure there are more things out there that I haven't seen, than those that I have, LOL. Your animals look very contented and happy.
    Come over and visit . . . I'm having a Give-A-Way :)

  3. All of your animals look so happy and healthy. Your chickens are beauties.
I have no idea what citron melons taste like. Are they tart or bitter without sugar?

  4. I think you are right - every teeny tiny farm needs a rooster! I've never had citron preserves are they tart? Heidi and Rosie look so sweet!

  5. That's a good looking rooster! Those red seeds are so interesting. I've never seen any like that. Good for you for making the preserves.

  6. Love the pictures of your chickens and goats. I am trying hard to talk the farmer in to getting me some goats and chickens. Maybe one day.
    Love you bunches

  8. The chickens reminded me of a game we played as kids called King of the Hill. Hope your weather stays good for them.

  9. Awww! Heidi and Rosie look just fine to me. So do those chickens, that's a fine looking rooster.
Your citron preserves look lovely. I have never seen a citron melon.

  10. The chickens look lovely..and yes! You have to
have a rooster..you have to have a 'man' about
the place to make sure things are done properly! :).
And..just to show the girls who's boss..! HeHe! Bless!

The melon seeds are nice..If you want to eat them right away,
don't dry them. They taste better when fresh. Some can be
roasted in the shell before eaten like pumpkin seeds....
Watermelon seeds contain nutrients such as vitamin B, potassium,
magnesium, and zinc, which studies have linked with various health
benefits. They are also a good source of healthy fats and protein!
    So..don'y throw them away...!

Just gone seven over here..bit of a frost out there to..still..nice
and dry, few days of sun but chilly...!
Nothing than a hot lemon tea won't put right..!
So..here's to the rooster...As James Cagney would say..."Top Of The
    World Ma"...! Happy Halloween! 🎃 👻 ☠️

  13. Hi Henny...I always love a little visit with your critters. And your chicken photos are so cute. They all look well loved and perfect to me. I really would love to get a few for Fox Grove.
Your melon looks delish but that preserve (I'd be all over that) looks delish.
We had snow yesterday and lots of it. My poor critters here are still shaking their heads. What? Too early!
This week it is to warm up again.
Sending love to you, Poppy and all. xo

  14. Henny, I love seeing around your farm...the chickens and animals. You must be a great gardener too. Canning is too pioneer like for me. LOL. I just do not want to work so hard to make jellies. :) I truly admire people who do and even love it. Blessings to you, xoxo, Susie

  15. Your chickens are so pretty. Your critters do look a little on the "fluffy side" but if they are healthy that is all that matters. I have never heard of a Citron Melon. Hope your jelly turned out great.

  16. Hello,
LOL, had to laugh about the over eating. That must be something that is all around, our little cat Penelope is also liking to eat and eat and her belly is growing. No she is not going to have kittens. LOL

    As always, enjoy your posts.

  17. Henny dear your jelly looks wonderful. I had never seen this type of melon before. Are you going to save the seeds for next year's garden? As for your sweet furry goats I am sure they are just putting on some extra padding for cooler weather :)! Definitely keep the rooster - he will make a great alarm clock. Hugs!

  19. Citron melon is unknown to me, but those red seeds are something else! Hats off to anyone willing to do their own preserves, btw, I admire it but am too lazy to ever try it myself.
    Beautiful chickens and goats!

  20. A joy to see that beautiful rooster. The goats look very content, they must have a good life.

  21. That rooster is such a pretty boy. I haven't seen a goat that's fuzzy like Heidi. She looks so soft.

  22. love the chicken pictures, they look so happy! Your preserves look amazing! My Grandmas made those

  23. Heidi and Rosie are so, so cute! Heidi looks so soft and fluffy, like a puppy :) I do think you should keep the rooster -- he is a very handsome fellow. As long as he stays relatively nice and doesn't attack you, he may help protect the hens. My remaining rooster is pretty mean, but I haven't gotten rid of him ... yet!
