It's the chickens again!

Where to begin! Berry picking with Shelby, or about the little black hen and the chicks that are hatching, or about the garden and what's been planted, or maybe show you the new iron table and chairs for the playhouse...bought off Craigslist.

Wait, I'll begin by saying "thank you" to new followers. Slack as I've been, you probably hate you stopped by, but please come back. I do appreciate you!

It has been total chaos in the chicken house for weeks now, with half the hens trying to "set". Like they are playing musical chairs. Hens moving from nest to nest, fussing and fighting over the eggs.

That little black hen took over one of the nest boxes and settled in to hatch three eggs that another hen had been sitting on.

Well, it wasn't long before the little black hen found herself with two baby chicks. On the third day with nothing more happening, I moved the little black hen and her two babies to a separate pen, and put that unhatched egg under another cranky hen.

There is a story behind this little black hen, in fact, she was the subject of one my very first posts, way back in 2013, when I started blogging.

We had been through a cold, windy, rainy night. Early the next morning a neighbor called. "Melba", she said, "it's so pitiful. During the night something killed our mama hen, and this morning we found one baby chick, cold and wet, but it's alive". "Will you take it", she asked. "I don't know how to raise a baby chick". So, her husband brought the chick to me...

Poor sweet baby. Once she was dry and warm, she tried to eat.

She recovered and grew into a healthy black hen.

 Sweet and gentle.

and now she is a mama. So cute!!

Can't believe we've got a post here, such as it is! I will save the berry picking and playhouse for next time.

Oh, and the last time I looked in the chicken house, there was a light grey hen sitting on the eggs  in the nest box on the left, the one with the red hen, in the picture...and I heard the faintest peeping. :)

Thank you for visiting. Hope to be back soon. Very soon!

Love,
Henny

  3. Your little black hen seems to be a very loving mother. She must have learned mothering from you, her adoptive mother.

  5. There's always something to look forward to with your posts. That black hen was so darling as a chick and she's beautiful now. I'm doing the math, though, does that mean she didn't become a mama until 5 years later? That surprises me. Can't wait for the next posts. A beautiful day to you!

  10. Little chicks are so cute, and love watching them with a hen. We haven't had any in a long time, most of our hens don't go broody, but every once in a while a few do, and it is hard to convince them they should get back to work. I just can't imagine you berry picking, what is ready so early?

  11. Love the story. So glad little black hen is a good mama. My daughter now has a baby chick in her house following her around because the mama hen was NOT a good mama and killed her other chick.

  15. I remember the story of the little chick and so sweet that now she is a mama, too. Baby chicks are so cute. But then they grow into those gangly teenagers .... Not so cute then!

  18. I'm having baby chicks right now too!! Isn't it fun? I just love your story of your black hen. I do wonder what breed she is? Maybe a mixture. How sweet - you rescued her! And she's still going broody at her age. You'll have lots of chicks running around soon. Thanks for sharing her sweet story.
