The Teeny Tiny Farm this morning

This is one sweet rooster! Not a mean bone in this fellow's body!

and look at this teeny tiny chicken! Isn't she adorable? This is one of the two chicks that hatched a few weeks ago. The little black chick disappeared. It just simply disappeared. It broke my heart. I have no idea what happened and will probably never know.

I let the rooster out of the goat lot first thing every morning, then he follows me to let the bunnies out.

Bun Bun sat right up to talk to me.

and Fiona went straight for the handful of grass and clover.

Dear friends, I started this post early this morning. Here it is now  9:00 pm and almost bedtime.

Close to the edge of dark, I went to put Bun Bun and Fiona in their cages for the night. When I turned to leave, there, draped all over a large bush near the pen was a huge black snake...and I know exactly what he was up to...he was making his way into the pen. Glad I got there when I did. The bunnies are safe.

Better get busy. Hope to be back soon. Hope to visit you all tomorrow. :)

Love,
Henny

  1. Oh..I'm sorry about the little black chick. But I'm sure glad you went to put the bunnies in before that snake got too close. If it's not one thing it's another. Fiona seems to be growing so fast. She likes her greens!

  2. That is one fine looking rooster! The bunnies are also looking very well fed and sleek.

So glad you got to the bunnies before the snake did! What did you do with him? Or did you just put the bunnies in their safe place and leave him to his own devices?

  4. Oh dear, I try to be brave about snakes but I really don't like them, not even the ones that aren't poisonous. The chickens and bunnies are wonderful though.

  5. What a beautiful rooster! Cute bunnies. Glad I didn't get to see the snake. My mind movie is bad enough. Yikes.

  6. I would expect you to have a sweet rooster . . . I think that animals sense kindness in the people that they are around and their personalities reflect the way they are treated.

  11. It is Snake Season here now, Adders basking in the sun mostly. I have to change Ben's walks as an adder bite is fatal to small animals. He does not seem to mind though, he seems to enjoy the change of scenery as much as I do.

  12. Your rooster looks like a picture! So handsome!

  13. I'm guessing some hungry animal snatched it. Chickens sadly don't have much defense for themselves or their young.

  14. I love to see photos of your little menagerie. So sorry about the little black chick. Glad you were able to rescue the bunnies from the black snake. Have a great day.

  15. Oh my! A snake! I saw a lot of those black 6 feet ones, very fat too, growing up in NW Pennsylvania. Your Fiona looks just like my Paul. They should meet...ha... I let Paul loose and it takes me a good while to catch him. But lately he goes into our garage to lay on the cool floor so I close the door and can catch him in less time. He and my dog like to lay on the cool floor. Andrea

  16. Maybe a snake who is not welcome should be put in a garbage can and relocated to a far away place.

  17. Your roo is a very handsome feller, indeed! The animals seem to have picked up on your sweet nature.

  18. That's so scary about the big black snake!! Terrifying!! That poor little black chick - I'm so sad thinking of what happened to that little baby, poor thing. This is why I can't keep chickens any more. I had a hawk come down and leave one half dead in my yard...we had to put it out of it's misery. I can't do that again. So, no more chickens for me!!

  19. That little chicken with feathers on its legs is cute. I'm sorry about the black one. Snakes eat rodents so I like to have them in my yard; I don't have any animals to lose to them. A week or so ago a big black snake got tangled in some bird netting in the back yard and my son and I had to free it. It was really twisted up in it. I put on leather gloves and held it while my son cut away the netting and we let it go back into the woods behind the house. How's your back holding up now that you've resumed your busy farm life? Are you still doing therapy for it?

  20. Is that Big Boy? He is still one good looking fellow. I'm not sure how I would do with the natural ebb and flow of life, even on your "teeny-tiny" farm, but I am sorry about the black chick, and very glad you got the bunnies locked up before Mr Snake slithered in! Yikes, I lifted a pan lid that I had put on the counter after using it this morning, and there was a big spider under it. Rather surprising, but at least not a snake!

  22. Henny, I once heard if you lay sawdust all around places like your rabbit pen, a snake won't cross into it over the sawdust. Don't know it it really works, but maybe.

  23. How long have you had Fiona? Are her and Bun Bun in the same pen together now? If so there might be some baby bunnies coming soon. Rabbits have babies ever 28 to 31 days. I love the pretty chickens. Hope your back is feeling better.

    Love you!
