Saturday at the Market

Thank you for the nice comments on the teeny tiny farm post. Didn't mean to go away and be gone so long. Four day has it been already?

Seems like Poppy is on the computer now, well off and on, from the time he gets home from work til bedtime.

And I've been busy preparing for the Christmas farmer's market and let me tell you, it was a good day, in spite of the rain! Yep, it rained again! The rain was light and there was no wind. It was cold but not freezing cold. And, there were shoppers! Shoppers who were buying! :)

The rain made it hard to keep our display pretty. Why didn't I get a picture before the rain! Lynn paintings, brooches, and dolls were displayed beautifully, before we shoved everything back out of the rain.

Dampness made the aprons hang limp. Lynn's smile brightened this picture. She has always been like a ray of sunshine...those freckles, those blue eyes, and her smile! Four aprons had already sold off the clothesline! Yay!

We were set up next to this nice lady. Her pralines were a big hit. I dared not sample any. It would have been easy to spend everything at her booth and undo all my trying to eat healthy and lose ten pounds!

Lynn across the way at The Flour Garden buying us each a cup of hot chocolate.

Gabbie's vegetables are always quick to sell out. I really meant to come home with a bag of Kale, but didn't.

These two are really good and make being at the market fun. Yesterday they played and sang Christmas songs.

That's about it for now. Exciting times around here what with decorating and thinking about Christmas! Baking cookies is on my list for today and you know what? Poppy and I want a fruit cake this year. He mentioned it just a day or so ago. Does anybody bake fruit cakes any more? It costs so much to buy all the ingredients...nuts, lots of nut, dried fruits. Shelby mentioned us getting together to bake fruit cakes. We'll see. For now, Shelby and Jimmy, Cousin Pat, and Mike are on a cruise heading for the Bahamas! Must be nice. The only place I cruise to is aboard Mama's old 1998 Toyota headed toward Walmart. How exciting is that? :)

Thank you for stopping by.

Love,
Henny

  1. Shame about the rain at the market, but it looks as if you had a good time and sold lots. Love the aprons, they are a real delight.

  2. Oh fruitcake. I think it always gets a bad rap. I do make it sometimes. I am the only one in my house that likes it so having too much of it around is a great temptation for me. Sometimes I split up the recipe into smaller amounts and make little cakes to give to friends. The recipe that I use is called Original Kentucky Whiskey Cake and the notation that I put next to the written out recipe in my cookbook says REALLY GOOD! It doesn't have that citron stuff in it which I don't particularly like. Candied cherries, golden raisins (or chopped dates), nuts, lots of eggs and of course bourbon whiskey (TWO cups). It probably came from the Louisville Courier Journal which we used to subscribe to. I'll send you the recipe if you'd like to try it.

    1. Your recipe does sound good! I am just not good at baking. About three years ago a lady gave me an old fruit cake recipe. I bought all the ingredients and went to work. Well it was awful. My husband kept say, you had to have done something wrong! :) I love your suggestion about the Colin Street Bakery and plan to look that up today. Poppy and I should order a fruit cake. That could be our gift to each other! I wonder if it is too late to order a cake. Thank you for the information.

  3. Glad you had a good day despite the weather. Your daughter is beautiful! I bet she looks just like her mama. I've never tasted a homemade fruitcake, but I guess I'll stick to cookies. I probably don't need another source of sugar at this time of year!

  5. I don't like fruitcake, but my husband and father-in-law swear by the Collin Street Bakery in Corsicana Texas. You can google them as they are online. Hubby says they are well worth the price.

    1. The colin street bakery fruitcake is to die for. I often order one just for myself. I never liked fruitcake until I tried one of theirs.

  6. Hello Henny Penny,
I am glad that you and Lynn (so nice to see her on your blog!) had good times at the market. Your aprons and bonnets are so "old time pretty",nice to hang in the kitchen just to brighten things up!
Do you mind a little fruitcake story? Years ago my husband owned a clothing store and his alterations lady/dry cleaning establishment ordered a fruitcake for his business as a Christmas thank you gift. When the UPS truck came to deliver it, the driver came to the rear door with a whole pallet load of Mrs Collins Bakery Fruitcakes! Somehow the order had been messed up, and the driver couldn't take them back. Do you know how long it takes to give away around four dozen fruitcakes?? I think we only could eat one, and I like fruitcake!

    1. I love the fruit cake story! What a shock that must have been! My Mother loved fruit cake and always made one for Christmas. I think most families did, here in the south anyway. But, when did fruit cakes become a joke? Seriously, I was afraid to say anything about liking fruit cake. Maybe that was a southern thing too. :) It is always fun to have a day with Lynn! Good to hear from you, Pam.

  7. Wish you could send us some of that rain your getting! Sounds like you had a good sale! Congrats... I am thinking you and Poppy need a second computer :O). Honeyman and I use the computers more than TV. We are not TV watchers. Just once in a while. We both enjoy looking up stuff on the computer and I blog and use it for work. I have never made a fruitcake. But I have had some I liked.

    1. We have had the rain lately. It is looking more and more like we need a second computer! Honestly, there is nothing fit to watch on TV anymore. Here it stays on sports or news...We do like Jeopardy and Shark Tank! I listen to bluegrass music while I sew at night. :)

  8. I thought about you on Saturday and commented to Frank that I hope Aunt Melba is doing better today in the rain at her craft fair. I am glad that you had a good day. Also you have more will power than I do I would of had to have some of the lady's sweets. I wish you the best of luck with the weight loss. I am just not on track at all. I love fruit cake but have not idea how to make it. I like the kind with lots of nuts.
    Love you

    1. Oh Vicki, it was such a fun day at the market. Selling some things made it even more fun! Have Lynn there was the best part. We don't get to spend that much time together. Love you!

  9. I'm happy to read the weather co-operated this time around, and I can see why your goods are so very popular, they are just so special !
We used to make fruitcake every year, starting early in November, adding more an more ingredients and allowing them to rest in a dark, cool cupboard.......lots of work and lots of money, considering the cost of nuts these days.
Your daughter is beautiful, and yes, her smile brightens up a rainy day.
    Hugs,
    ~Jo

    1. Oh, thank you Jo. Fruit cakes used to be a big job to make. I can remember my grandmother pulling out a fruitcake, unwrapping it, was it cheesecloth they used, and putting something on the cake then wrapping it again. Maybe that was mama I remember doing that. :)

  12. Oh loved this post! Must be because there is so much there for me to relate to! That could be the farmers markets I go to, except ours are mostly inside this time of the year. I sell aprons too, but mine are plain jane ones. I sold three yesterday. Bet you could have found someone selling fruitcakes at the market:) Never understood the fruitcake jokes, we have them here too, the jokes that is. I LOVE fruitcake. I made a couple already, and hope to make more. My first two were a zucchini fruitcake recipe that I greatly changed. I left out the zucchini and the candied fruit. Instead I put in four cups of runny dark marmalade, stuff that hadn't worked out. I put in the raisins and nuts and added some dried cranberries and chopped up dried apricots and pineapple. It was way too runny, and the loaf pans were full to the top. After it was in the oven for a bit, it overflowed and made a mess. I had to cook it much longer than the recipe said, and the top was burnt along the edges. Other than that, it tastes great! We ate half of one in the first two days, and the rest is wrapped in the fridge to age a bit. Buying dried fruit in the bulk section or in bags in the baking aisle is cheaper than the candied cherries and the peel in their little containers. The cherries put me off one time when I looked at the ingredients. Who need dye #6 or what ever those cherries are coloured with.
