That could be the farmers markets I go to, except ours are mostly inside this time of the year. I sell aprons too, but mine are plain jane ones. I sold three yesterday. Bet you could have found someone selling fruitcakes at the market:) Never understood the fruitcake jokes, we have them here too, the jokes that is. I LOVE fruitcake. I made a couple already, and hope to make more. My first two were a zucchini fruitcake recipe that I greatly changed. I left out the zucchini and the candied fruit. Instead I put in four cups of runny dark marmalade, stuff that hadn't worked out. I put in the raisins and nuts and added some dried cranberries and chopped up dried apricots and pineapple. It was way too runny, and the loaf pans were full to the top. After it was in the oven for a bit, it overflowed and made a mess. I had to cook it much longer than the recipe said, and the top was burnt along the edges. Other than that, it tastes great! We ate half of one in the first two days, and the rest is wrapped in the fridge to age a bit. Buying dried fruit in the bulk section or in bags in the baking aisle is cheaper than the candied cherries and the peel in their little containers. The cherries put me off one time when I looked at the ingredients. Who need dye #6 or what ever those cherries are coloured with.Karenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08938874724231860923noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-971541568171657986.post-87071812692292360262014-12-08T07:38:18.493-08:002014-12-08T07:38:18.493-08:00Oh my goodness! I think most families did, here in the south anyway. But, when did fruit cakes become a joke? Seriously, I was afraid to say anything about liking fruit cake. Maybe that was a southern thing too. :) It is always fun to have a day with Lynn! Well it was awful. My husband kept say, you had to have done something wrong! :) I love your suggestion about the Colin Street Bakery and plan to look that up today. Poppy and I should order a fruit cake. That could be our gift to each other! I wonder if it is too late to order a cake. Your aprons and bonnets are so "old time pretty",nice to hang in the kitchen just to brighten things up!<br />Do you mind a little fruitcake story? Years ago my husband owned a clothing store and his alterations lady/dry cleaning establishment ordered a fruitcake for his business as a Christmas thank you gift. When the UPS truck came to deliver it, the driver came to the rear door with a whole pallet load of Mrs Collins Bakery Fruitcakes! Somehow the order had been messed up, and the driver couldn't take them back. Do you know how long it takes to give away around four dozen fruitcakes?? I think we only could eat one, and I like fruitcake! I am the only one in my house that likes it so having too much of it around is a great temptation for me. Sometimes I split up the recipe into smaller amounts and make little cakes to give to friends. The recipe that I use is called Original Kentucky Whiskey Cake and the notation that I put next to the written out recipe in my cookbook says REALLY GOOD! It doesn't have that citron stuff in it which I don't particularly like. Candied cherries, golden raisins (or chopped dates), nuts, lots of eggs and of course bourbon whiskey (TWO cups). It probably came from the Louisville Courier Journal which we used to subscribe to. I'll send you the recipe if you'd like to try it.vichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18428581552807859803noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-971541568171657986.post-4283350213228700742014-12-07T08:12:07.183-08:002014-12-07T08:12:07.183-08:00Shame about the rain at the market, but it looks a...Shame about the rain at the market, but it looks as if you had a good time and sold lots.
