Deer, Guineas, and Dumperoo

Now I know that deer hunters in some places have a bad reputation because of a few obnoxious rednecks...like here in our county where hunting with dogs is allowed.  The hunters park their muddy Toyota pickup trucks, with their dog boxes on the back, up and down these country roads.  The hunters sit in their trucks with their doors wide open and talk to each other on their cb radios, waiting for a pack of dogs to run a deer out of the woods.  Often there is a deer or a dog getting hit by a passing car.

My point in telling you all this is a little story about Poppy.  Poppy "still hunts".  He goes alone into the woods, sits quietly in a tree stand or on the ground, enjoys the wildlife, and waits for a trophy buck to wander up.  He was doing just this yesterday when he heard one of the trucks crank up and head down our path.  He also heard the dogs barking in the distance and getting closer...he sat there very still, listening, when suddenly a large doe comes running right to Poppy sitting there on the ground.  The doe looked him right in the eyes!  Poppy said he waved his hand and said, "you better run"!!!  The doe took off!

Poppy was in the woods only about a quarter of a mile from our house.  I was in the yard tending the animals and also listening to the commotion...when that large doe comes running right up behind our chicken house and stops!  Perfectly still!  I think she knew where she would find safe hiding!

Update on the Guineas...

The babies have made it safely through these freezing cold nights of late.  Of course, that heat lamp hanging over their feed dish has been a life saver!  There is a drop cord run from the outlet on the side of the house all the way down to the pen near the pond!!

They have grown...and beginning to look like Guineas...

Eating chick weed found growing in the garden.

Funny characters!  Papa Guinea is proud and stands looking into the pen most of the day...

Hope I haven't offended anyone talking about deer hunters.  We honestly do need the hunters because of the huge deer population.  Just tone it down a little!!! :)

Dumperoo tried to help with the sewing last night...

Thank you for stopping by!

Love,
Henny Penny

  1. I am sure that sweet little Dumperoo would love to tear up a few spools of thread! And it makes me sad to think of the deer running from dogs. :( I bet if Poppy does get a trophy deer, the meat goes to Hunters for the Hungry? I love you!

  2. Dogs are no allowed to run after deer in Minnesota. Your dog can be shot for chasing deer. I support deer hunting..we have way too many up here. They get hit by cars and carry ticks and tick diseases....I only hunt with my camera anymore. That is a great assistant you have in your sewing room:)

  3. Thank you, thank you ,thank you! This vegan appreciates that you recognise hunters and redneck hunters are two different things. Redneck hunters are the cruel guys who dump their dogs in the woods when the season ends.

    1. You are right! We took in a hunting dog the hunters left in the woods. He had a number painted on his side. He was hungry and covered in ticks. We cared for him but he had heart worms and did not live very long. I'm sure that is why the hunters left him. I had my arms around him when he died. Poppy and I both cried.

  4. I don't like dog runners either. I think that it is wrong that you should hunt like by sitting in the woods and wait on a deer. We love deer meat and I tell Frankie to kill anything that is legal. I like your sewing helper also, but I agree with Lynn that he would probably like to chase a spool of thread.
    Love you,

    1. I wish I was good at cooking deer meat. When Poppy kills one, he donates the meat to hunters for the hungry. Maybe you can tell me how to cook deer meat. I have several packages in the freezer, we kept because I want to try cooking it. Love you!

  5. I didn't know about people letting dogs run down deer. Sounds mean, and lazy. I'm glad Poppy gave the doe the chance to run away, and that she wound up in your yard! Hope she escaped. My husband used to hunt, but when we learned to ski, he couldn't take two winter vacations, so the deer were safe! Plus, he really didn't like to kill them. I showed your blog to my friend Mary, and she loved it. She remembered the spinning wheel song. I'll make sure that she has the link to your site, it reminded her of the Walton experience. I'm glad you made a nice Thanksgiving dinner for you and Poppy, though I know it seemed a little lonesome. We had turkey sandwiches for dinner tonight. Warm wishes to you!

    1. These hunters are lazy. Wait until I tell Poppy your husband gave up deer hunting to ski. All of Poppy's vacation goes to hunting. If it's not deer, it's turkey! Thank you for showing my blog to your friend. It still amazes me that anyone would read something I write. Thank you Pam.

  7. Hello Henny Pen! There are hunters with dogs here, but they are night hunters, coon hunters, but I don't know how many really hunt, because we have so many coyotes. That is a sad situation, but no sadder than spot lighting deer in the mountains at night and I am sure that goes on a lot. Well, there are too many, one ran across the top of my old station wagon, thankfully no one was hurt in that little jump, but I think your Poppy is getting a soft heart -,sounds like his heart is not into his hunting any more. Well, he is a great husband to you that's for sure. I still think it is funny about him jumping in the leaves... Have a great day, the guineas are gorgeous! XO Terry
