Picked up this old nail on our morning walk with the dogs. Another little treasure for the Old Motor Grader Road museum. Maybe I should add a picture for those who haven't seen the little museum...
Treasures are hard to find now that the road is more gravel than dirt.
Do you remember the big heavy bird feeder I bought two or three years ago...

It holds very little feed but looks pretty hanging on the front porch.
Recently we noticed two little Wrens building a nest inside the feeder. They were having trouble keeping moss and other nesting materials from falling out the hole in the back, so we helped them out by taping a piece of cardboard over the hole...
you can see a little of the tape there on the side. Didn't seem to bother them at all. They finished the nest and then it wasn't long before there were tiny eggs inside.
It is amazing how quick those little eggs hatched. We noticed the Wrens going in and out so Poppy took a look...
Oh my goodness! Three hungry little mouths to feed. How tiny and helpless and sweet. We are keeping a close eye on this little family. So afraid something will harm them.
Guess I had better get busy. Poppy works until noon today...giving me a chance to get more cleaning done...the floors are a mess, everything in the house needs dusting, and the back porch needs a good cleaning...whew! Where to start!

The thing l do like in the 'Old Motor Grader Road Museum'

seen..HeHe! I'd paint it pink and hang it on the wall..!
But! Then! I paint most things pink and hang them on the
wall..! :O).
Now! Rusty nails contain iron oxide, a reddish brittle coating,
which forms when iron and oxygen react together in the presence
of moisture in the air (water)...
Also known as ferric oxide, the rust in nails can provide iron to plants,
which is beneficial for plants...!
And..The bird feeder with the little wrens in look lovely...Hope there
out of reach from Smokey..! You know what pussy~cats are like....! :).

Ah! That sounds like the letter~box..Postman..they come so late these
days, used to come before seven, now it's after lunch..!
More junk mail l expect..! :(
Best get on..been drinking a lot of squash, it's very hot over here!
Watering the garden twice a day...Phew! Oh! Well..better than rain..!

I had not seen your museum. I see so much of 'A Bit of Birdsong' in it! I love seeing artistic families! The baby wrens are so cute. I think we have a family in a gourd. The man wren keeps singing over it. And the gourd is shaking now and then!

ReplyDeletethe deer antlers off. Took tons of twigs to fill that pipe up. But sadly as the 5 eggs were about to hatch, some animal
went down in and stole the eggs. Guessing it was Precious' famous patio chipmunk. Lynn and Precious
Thanks for stopping over Henny, yes that little vintage waffle iron is pretty enough to display. I currently have it as the center piece on my farmhouse table. Pretty old things are so lovely arn't they?

ReplyDeleteThere is something so very special about seeing nature in action like this. I remember how much the whole family loved observing some Welcome Swallows that nested once in our back porch - very messy but totally fascinating :)
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a ceramic bird feeder those little birds are nesting in. Those are heavy. I've made a few. Used to make bird houses shaped like Eggs... but sometimes it's hard to smooth out the inside and was always afraid the sharp edges inside would be dangerous, so only used them as decorative. You were smart in taping up the other side of that feeder!

ReplyDeleteThat's a strange spot to build a nest but obviously it suited the wrens and now they have their hungry little ones to feed. My Dad couldn't resist picking up odd nails. I'm sure by the time he moved off the family farm he had his own version of a museum.

So glad to see that your heavy birdfeeder has found a new use! How wonderful to have 3 new babies in there! Sure hope they survive to adulthood like their parents! if I know you, You'll be keeping a good eye on them! Aren't Eli and Ellie cute, watching for Poppy to come home. We have two doggies here that also stand at attention and wait in great faithfulness for the Daddy who is away :) Bless them. The little wrens' nest is so sweet!

ReplyDeleteWrens are the sweetest little birds ever. They can choose some of the most unusual places to build a nest. One year they built in the pocket of hubby's leather apron hanging on a nail.
