Babies!

Hey Friends,

Here it is going on two weeks since my last post! Where do the days go anyhow?

Oh my goodness, have I ever got something special to show you...
This adorable baby boy is Kendall, our new great grandson. Isn't he simply adorable! Kendall was born July 15th to our beautiful grandaughter Michaela and her fiance, Jacob.
and since the day he came into this world, I must have said a hundred times, "he is so adorable"!

Been wanting to show you Kendall but didn't want to post pictures without his mommy's approval, so when Michaela said, "Grandma, post all the pictures you want to", Well, I was tickled to death. But I'll try not to post too many tonight.

And in other baby news...The early part of last week I released the baby dove. Little did I know how tightly that baby bird had attached itself to my heart. My heart has actually ached for him...
So, here's what happened. I sat the young dove on top of a post just outside the kitchen window where we feed the birds. Most days there are three or four doves, along with dozens of other birds, that visit and eat there.

When the little dove realized he was free, he flew up into the trees, then he came back and lit on the ground and ate birdseed with the others. When the others flew, so did he. When night time came, I worried, but he was right back in the yard the next morning.

So he made it through two days and two nights on his own, or was he on his own? Suddenly there were eleven doves in the yard, all around the baby. They didn't chase him away or bother him, but seemed concerned about him.

Then late in the day on the third day, I watched out the kitchen window as the birds began leaving the yard, just before dark. I noticed that one dove stayed. She sat perfectly still watching the baby dove, almost like she was talking to him. I couldn't believe my eyes when the baby dove walked up to her and when they were within inches of each other, she flew and he flew with her, out across the cut-over. I haven't seen either one of them again, or at least haven't recognized either of them.

I have been at the point of tears every day since, but Poppy says I am worrying for no reason, that the baby dove is safe, and with his mother now.  I am trying hard to believe that. Do you think Poppy is right?

Trying to keep my mind off the baby dove I began scrubbing the back porch...

Who knew a baby bird could make such a mess. It took me a good four hours scrubbing the furniture and mopping the porch floor, but that's okay.
The dappled sunlight on the clean porch lifted my spirits, but didn't take the pain from my heart.
and while I'm at it, I might as well show you the whole porch...
this old cabinet, where egg cartons are stored, needs a coat of paint.
and along the wall above the wood pile hang antique bridles, bits, and other things I don't have names for. :)
sure looking forward some cold winter days and watching this wood burn in the fireplace. Is there anything cozier than sitting in front of a fire on a cold night.

So this is my post, such as it is. It's too long and way too much to read, so thank you for listening. Hope to be back soon and hope you will come back too. And now I have a lot of blog reading and catching up to do.

Love,
Henny

  1. Moms always talk about how sad they are when their babies leave the nest, but yours literally did. I agree with Poppy, the baby is safe and sound with his family. And it’s all due to your loving care.

  2. I am sure the baby bird took off with family! Your new great grandson is just the cutest little guy! Congratulation to all! The porch looks real good!

  3. Henny you have a good heart! I must say, the first thing I thought of when your little dove sat with that bigger one and then flew off together, was that his Mama had found him. You did a wonderful job with that little dove and now you must leave the rest to our creator. And just get yourself busy with other things. Maybe you'll see him again from time to time. In the meantime, just wait for your next great adventure! Peace to you!

    1. Thank you for the encouraging words Diane. I just can not shake the feeling that I sent the baby Dove off hungry. Don't know why because I mixed his cereal and fed him before he left.

  4. Oh gosh, and I forgot to mention was a cute little sweetie your great grandson is. What a wonderful addition to your family! Welcome to Kendall!

  5. Your little sweet Kendall IS adorable! I can empathize with you concerning the little dove for I would be the same way. In my mind all animals think just like I do. There's a big name for that, but I'll not try to spell it tonight. Well, as my mom used to say, "There never was an ill wind that didn't blow some good." In this instance, you surely did get a nice clean porch to enjoy.

    1. Well if you think of that word, I would love to know it. :) Poppy tells me all the time that animals and birds don't think like we do. I love those words from your mom. Going to write them dowm. Thank you so much.

  6. Ooh Henny, what a beautiful little grandson you are graced with, he will be spoiled I just know it :)
I have a feeling your little Dove will be in good hands, with his mama, and surrounded by the entire flock.
Your porch is just so special, with all your collections, it just says welcome, come sit a spell :)
Thank you for sharing Henny, this made my night.

  7. Congratulations on your beautiful great grandson-he is really adorable. I think the little dove has found good company and it seems God has allowed you to see that. The little fellow could have immediately flown off-rest in that thought and try not to worry! You did good!! And your porch is so inviting! I love your simple rustic style!

  8. He is adorable! Congratulations. And great grandmother? You must have had your own children at 4 years old 😲. And in regards to the dove. I think you are looking at the back side of the mirror. Rather than focusing on the loss of a pet, maybe think of the happy life you preserved 💕. He might not be able to come right out and thank you, but critters know a loving heart.

  9. Oh my goodness Henny your new great-grand baby is so adorable! He is sooo cute! Is this your first great-grand? I know you are proud and you should be.

Now don't you worry about that baby bird because I'm sure that was his mother he went off with and he is with his family now. I certainly understand you being concerned - I would be too - but just think how happy that whole dove family is now to be reunited and all thanks to you!

    1. Thank you Bonnie. No, Kendall is not our first. Our grandson Joseph has two, a boy and a girl, both young children. I think I've posted their picture. We very rarely get to see them. But they were here last Thanksgiving. Thank you for the kind words about the little dove. I did read that a mother dove will search for her baby for several day after he leaves the nest. She may have known that was her baby on the porch. Animals are amazing, aren't they.

  15. Oh, HP - what a post! So emotional! I feel for you too, with the little dove. I will tell you my opinion. I truly believe (esp. after watching my chickens so much) that animals have very effective, intricate ways of communicating with each other. I firmly believe that baby dove and all the other doves there, knew each other and what was going on. I imagine that last night, that his mama was asking him, "Are you sure you are ready to leave here?" And they did. In fact, since he was allowed to eat with them and fly with them those several days, that really shows that they knew him. Otherwise, they'd have viewed him as competition, a stranger bird, and driven him away.
Your new great-grandson is so adorable! At first I thought he was one of your baby dolls, modeling new sewn clothes :) So sweet and beautiful. Your family is very blessed.
I LOVE your porch. I could curl up on that cot and take the best nap.

  16. MK, thank you so much. Your comment has brought tears to my eyes, and I think you are right! I mentioned to Poppy, how unusual that so many doves came to the yard after we released the baby one. We had been seeing only three or four, and then counted eleven around him. That so sweet that you thought Kendall might be one of the dolls. Sorta looks like one of them. :) Let me tell you, that old iron cot on the porch is the best place to take a nap, especially with the ceiling fan turned on low. Sometimes if Poppy is missing, that's where I find him. Thank you MK.

  19. What a darling little GGS you have! Hope you get to meet him soon.
Your loving care of the baby pigeon enabled him/her to be ready to be free to join his tribe. What could be better?
Love your porch, but suggest you hang the horseshoe with the open side up - to catch the luck, you know!

    1. Thank you Barbara Anne. I did not know that about hanging a horseshoe. I will be changing them. I think we have three or four on the porch, probably all hanging the wrong way. We need all the good luck we can get these days, don't we. Thank you!

  20. Your new great grandson is a real cutie. I hope he lives nearby so you can get to see him often. I think your little dove is safe and you can relax now. How encouraging that he was immediately adopted by another dove, The doves that come to our feeder always come in bunches and seem to be very sociable birds. There is almost always one, however, that thinks it’s his duty to chase everyone else who comes near but it usually doesn’t last long and they are all eating nicely again.

    1. Thank you Cynthia. I've noticed there is one big dove here that likes to chase the others away. That's funny, isn't it?

  21. What sweet pictures of little Kendall. I can just imagine the baby smells and the feeling of holding him close. It's been too long since I held a baby. Drat this COVID.
I believe your little baby bird is with his family. From what I've read of most birds, (and a lot of animals), they would have never let him hang around them and eat if he wasn't part of their group. I think it means a lot that he was encouraged to fly away with them. Maybe you'll still see him from time to time. You have such a caring and sweet heart.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  22. Hi Henny,
Congratulations, what a sweet baby. Prayers for baby and family.
Your story about the dove made me think of my dove that we raised in March. We named him Bird. ;-) He too went off one day. He visited often during April, I knew it was him because he would roost on our deck railing and no other dove did that.
