Several little things...

Nowadays, I don't even think about the cabin being red...

except for the other day walking back from the garden and noticing how the setting sun reflected on the red logs...

Funny thing too,  I had been singing to myself that old hymn, "Life's evening sun is sinking low, a few more days and I must go...to meet the deeds that I have done, where there will be no setting sun."   You know how you get a song stuck in your head.

Anyhow, a bit of news here...
Leek seeds! Found these missing seeds this morning in a lunch bag tucked inside a granite ware pot on the pantry shelf. Yep, put where I would be sure to remember. Wonder if it's too late to plant a few?

and another thing...
ever since we added the new table, rug, and those thrift store curtains, I have not been able to find the perfect tablecloth...until now.

Know what had been missing...the word "rustic"! Went online, entered "rustic log cabin type tablecloths" and immediately I knew this was the one! "Burlap! A soft Burlap that hangs pretty.

Still doing a little re-decorating, Poppy and I got the hall painted in that Legionaire Tan color like the bathroom.

Had to take all the old framed pictures off the walls...
Cat's can get comfortable anywhere! Today, I plan to put a few of these pictures back on the hall wall.

and a bit of gardening news, I didn't know...
Dill will inhibit the growth of Eggplant and Bell Peppers. Who knew!

Dill was growing all in the teeny tiny garden. I mean there were big pretty dill plants growing next to the Eggplants and the some of the bell pepper plants. The Eggplants especially, were struggling to survive.  Oh, they were pitiful looking.

So, I Googled, "which plants are compatible with Dill"? Well, I discovered quite a list of plants that do terrible planted near Dill.

That's when I pulled out the dehydrator and plugged it in...

The dill almost dried away to nothing, but after crumbling it into a paper bag, made quite a bit for a spice jar. I did leave two healthy dill plants growing in the garden, near the tomatoes. :)

Well, I did say there were several little things. Thank you for putting up with my blogging.

and since my last thank you, a couple more followers; thank you! I appreciate your friendship.

Love,
Henny

something about that setting sun

  1. That brings back memories. I grew up singing that song, but haven't heard it or thought about it in a long time!

  2. Yep, put the seeds in the crock. They'll be safe in there - hahaha sooo something I do on a semi-regular basis:-)

  3. I am trying to learn not to put things in a "safe place" as I ALWAYS lose them! Love the way the cabin glows in the evening light, it looks so welcoming :)

  5. That is a nice song to have struck in your mind and heart. I had no idea about the dill being bad around egg plant or peppers. I have dill coming up everywhere in my garden by the blackberries. Once you plant dill you will have it forever, LOL. I like to put it in bouquets for pretty greenery among the flowers.

    1. Thank you Connie. Hope you're doing well these days. I didn't know that about dill either. I don't remember it hurting anything in the garden last year. Well, I didn't have any luck with peppers last year, come to think of it.

  6. I just love your house. It looks so homey and comfortable and the yard is so wonderful and neat! And who is that pretty lady on the far left side of the picture pile.

It's been blowing a gale all day long here. A cold front (yes!) is moving in and the humidity has dropped it seems like about 100%. I can sure live with that!

    1. Thank you Vic. You are the one with the yard!! The beautiful yard! That lady on the far left is Dan's mother when she was young. We're into hot humid stormy weather...but hopefully a cold front is headed this way.

  7. Dill only grows for me if it came from a previous year's dill. I have tried seeding it in a nice row...not one seed came up. For years I had dill growing among my flowers but then one year I had exactly 2 plants. I made sure to leave one of them to shed its seeds but ever since then I get just a few plants. Who knows why!!
I'm glad you found your missing seeds.
Who knew that Burlap comes in nice soft fabric instead of the coarse stuff. Your tablecloth looks perfect.

    1. Thank you Granny Marigold. Dill sure is a pretty plant. I was shocked at how soft and pretty the burlap tablecloth is. Had it been the regular old stiff itchy burlap, I would have returned it. I love this one!

  9. Dear Jenny your table cloth is just perfect. Had to smile when you said the kitties couldn't get comfortable anywhere. Mine never liked me redecorating either. Keeping their paws out of the paint is a challenge too :). Thanks for the heads up about dill. Mine always reseeds in the same place so I will remember about the eggplant and peppers. Have a great day. Hugs!

  16. I love seeing your home Henny, it has always been my dream to build a log home.
I remember when you stained the wood with the red, and was worried about the look, but it turned out perfect.
Your tablecloth is precious, my granddaughter had burlap runners on her wedding shower tables, with Mason jars, filled with simple wildflowers.
    Stay safe dear friend.

i love your log cabin/cottage, i think it fits in well with the surrounding bush & your gardens.
i don't think your teeny tiny garden is all that small either, it's a good size & can't wait to see it when everything is grown.
have been catching up with the rest of your posts & thoroughly enjoyed the tours around the gardens, your azaleas are amazing! also loved what you did with the birdbath, so creative!

I guess the gardenn is not really teeny tiny, but when I talk about gardening, I'm afraid folks who really garden, big time, will laugh at my tiny space. Thank you for visiting.

    1. Hey Kev. Well the cabin used to be brown. It's built from cedar logs and for years and years, stayed a beautiful color. Even though we cared for the logs and applied CWF to protect them, the logs turned an ugly dark brown. It took a lot of nerve to stain the cabin with a redwood stain.

  27. Growing and drying your own dill,, sounds tasty for later cooking. I did learn years ago, when I
could garden without deer, that there are definitely veggies that do not like to be grown together.
I love Smokey protecting, of course what else, the wonderful old pictures.
