We built a bridge!

Hey friends,

It sure is damp and gloomy here, again today. All gray and misting rain, making it feel much colder than it actually is. The heavy rain is just west of us, heading this way!

Mama used to say, "however your Monday starts off, that's how your week will be". Wonder if that holds true for the first day of the month.

Know what's funny?? I started this post on Friday the 1st, and those words still apply...waiting on the heavy rains.

But YAY!! It is March 1st 3rd and spring can't be far away.

This flowering quince started blooming in December and has not stopped. How cheerful is that! :)

A little story from yesterday. Boy, if only I had a "before" picture...

I don't have one, but can tell you the story is about that little foot bridge you can see way up there in the distance between me and the shop...

It was early morning, around 8:00. I was in the bunny lot, my last stop with the feed bucket before going back to the house, when I heard yelling, a man's voice, yelling!

Poppy and Eli, just minutes earlier, had walked past me and gone out of sight around the back of the house. There it was again, a man yelling, but what was he saying! "Dan", I yelled back, "was that you?"  No answer.

I am deaf in one ear making it hard for me to tell what direction a sound is coming from.

Anyhow I hurried out of the bunny lot and came around the back side of the house to find Poppy crawling out of the ditch, (our wet weather creek), that runs along the back yard.

"I fell", he said. When he stepped onto that old thirty year old foot bridge, his foot went through the rotten wood, catching his leg which made his body twist around and fall into the deep wet leaves in the ditch. I was surprised the fall didn't break his leg, but Poppy is fine, thank goodness.  He has strong bones. I hate to think what would have happened had it been me who fell through...with osteoporosis.

So yesterday we built a new bridge. I had the fun job of tearing the old bridge down while Poppy went to Rustic Building Supply for two 4" x 4" posts...

using what was left of that stack of boards Todd and Andee gave us.

Every day, Eli, Weetie, Poppy, and I walked across that old bridge, and every day I would say to Poppy, "sure hope this bridge holds up". "This bridge is not going to fall", he would always say. Yeah right! Now we know!

So, here is our sturdy new bridge...

Oh, and that bird feeder...do you like it? I simply fell in love with it and had to have it. It was only $6.00
and looks so pretty hanging under the eave of the house on the front porch. The little birds love it too. It's also pretty here with Randy's painting which is still displayed on this antique chair in the living room. I love it!

Gosh, I've talked your ears off. Sorry about that. I'll save the rest for next time.

Love,
Henny

  3. I'd say Poppy is one lucky man to have fallen like that and not broken any bones. The new bridge looks great, as does the bird feeder. At first glance I thought it was an unusual birdhouse with 2 openings. Then I realized. $6 was a good deal too.

  4. Thank goodness Poppy didn't get hurt! I love the new bridge and it looks real sturdy. That new bird feeder is wonderful too. You sure are hauling a lot of leaves there Henny! Be careful! I am hoping Spring will be here soon but we had yet another snow last night and high temps in the teens this week so it may be a little longer here. It lifts my spirits to see your flowering quince though!

Henny your flowering Quince is gorgeous. Gee to think you've had those beautiful flowers for months now. Lucky, lucky you. I'm so glad Poppy wasn't hurt when the bridge collapsed. How scary. Looks like your new one will be great for a long time to come. I like your new bird feeder too. Well, here, the snowbanks are taller than the houses. Yikes. When will it ever melt. And how much Spring flooding will there be. Stay tuned!

  16. Poppy sure was lucky that he didn't break something in that fall. The wet leaves probably padded the ground some, but he could have been caught in the hole in the wood and twisted his ankle or knee. I hope he's not too sore in the morning. That quince is beautiful. You've got blooming flowers and it's 9 degrees here. We had 3 inches of snow this morning, too. The national news showed areas in the southeast that had terrible tornadoes. I hope you don't get any bad storms with the weather headed your way. That is a cute bird feeder, but it looks more like a bird house to me. I bet wrens would love to build a nest in it. We keep 5 feeders filled and I make suet for one of them. The birds are eating me out of house and home this winter! I have to put out more suet every 2 or 3 days. But, I love watching the birds on it. We have bluebirds this year for the first time and they've stayed all winter and eat that suet all day. They are gorgeous. Do the cardinals come to your new feeder? I love them, too, but don't see as many as in past years. I'm glad you got some leaves moved; be careful with your back.

    1. Hey Peg. Oh, he was very lucky. He said the reason for the yelling was that he thought something had to be broken. and all those leaves did make a soft place to land. The leaves and pine straw have saved me at least three times. Falling is so scary. 9 degrees sounds cold!! It's rain down here and snow up there! How sad that 23 people were killed in those tornadoes yesterday. Thankfully, we didn't get any storms. We love the bluebirds too, and yes, the cardinals are still here. Sometimes I am amazed at how many are lined up waiting to get to a feeder. Thank you Peg.

  18. Crossing the Bridge....
I walk the twisting, turning road,
A dream fills up my heart.
My backpack holds its heavy load
    Placed there at the start.

I climb the ever steep’ning hills,
    Exhaustion takes it toll.
    Anticipating endless thrills
    And company for my soul.

At last it looms ahead of me,
The bridge that I must cross.
And once across, what will I be?
And can I bear the loss?

Once there I see the other side,
But what now holds me back?
Can it be my foolish pride,
Or worse yet, what I lack?

I throw the backpack on the ground
    And leave it laying there,
Knowing now that what I’ve found
    Has worth without compare.

The rest is easier than I thought,
    A destiny fulfilled.
Finding what I long have sought,
    All inhibitions stilled...

  28. I love that bird feeder! So glad no one was hurt and that you now have a sturdy to bridge to walk across in the future. Yukky, gloomy, misty weather here again, too, and we just hauled all the citrus in the sunroom because it’s going to be 29 and 28 degrees the next two nights. They ar covered with ripening fruit and blossoms and we can’t have them freezing to death out there.

  31. Hi Henny...so glad to hear Poppy was not hurt (maybe his feelings a bit :-b ). If that had been me I would have gone down like a sack of potatoes and broken a bone. Your new bridge looks so cute and the bird house is adorable. Would love to see where you have hung it. We are still under snow (just imagine) and about to lose our minds. We need spring so badly.
    Love to all.
