Cleaning and a little cooking

Two days ago my very words were, "if I don't do anything else today, I'm going to wash all the mirrors in the house, and clean that cabinet with the spice rack".  Would you believe I still haven't done that? Got other stuff done though!

Went out to feed the animals first thing this morning and whilst out there...

cleaned the little goat barn...really good, then added a thick layer of hay for them to sleep on. Hopefully, Rosie won't eat all their new bedding!

It's the little section on the left side of the teeny tiny barn. Rosie and Heidi sleep there, and hide there during a thunderstorm. Sure looks better now with the clean hay. Had it not been so darn hot and humid, I would have climbed up in there with them.

Heidi says she would never act like a little pig, the way Rosie does.

Oh my gosh, friends, when I came back in the house, my clothes were literally stuck to me. It's miserable out there!

Anyhow, after cooling off and changing clothes, I pulled out a big pot and cut up everything we had picked in the garden yesterday...well, everything that would be good in vegetable soup...

Then fried out a little fat back grease...

to season the soup with, and put it on the stove to simmer.  That's the fat meat with the grease fried out, in case you were wondering. :) Reminds me of mama. She did make the very best vegetable soup. This pot of soup has tomatoes, okra, green beans, corn, lima beans, cabbage, onion, carrots, potatoes, and, I think that's it. Wish I could say ALL the vegetables came from our garden.

Next, I grated a big old Zucchini (from our garden)...

and made zucchini bread. Sorry about the splatters baked onto the pan. I was messy pouring the batter. Does this look like zucchini bread? Can't wait to try it.

Soon, I will get around to that apron post. Actually, just wanted to show you a few that are going in my shop. Embarrasses me to call it a shop, but you know what I mean.

Why not show you now?

So, that's it. Now, I've simply got to find the time to make more dolls. Shelby has learned of another really good craft event coming up in November.

Started this post yesterday...Thank you for putting up with me.

Love,
Henny

  1. Those are the perfect aprons. Honestly, just slip in and out of them. That goat looking at you while eating, so cute. Our neighbors had some goats for awhile...my gosh they will absolutely eat anything. I fed them smashed pumpkins from decorating the porch, raked up the neighbor's apples for them, and gave them veggie or bread scraps. I never gave them meat or dairy anything. I know that if they are startled they can jump 10 feet straight up. LOL. Blessings to you, xoxo, Susie

    1. Thank you Susie. You are right about the aprons. I hate feeling a tied apron on the back of my neck. Crossback aprons are so comfortable. Goats really are funny. If I'm not careful, Rosie will chew a hole in the tail of my shirt while I'm out feeding them.

  2. Oh I Love your aprons! Beautiful.
I thought I read you didn't like to cook?? It looks like you make wonderful stuff! I've got to let some of my zukes get bigger-I've been frying them with oregano when they are still only about 6 inches long. Your goat is so pretty...

    1. Thank you Debra. Well, I really don't care much for cooking. Some days the mood kinda hits me. Frying the zucchini with oregano sounds good. It's been good to learn some new ways of cooking vegetables, thanks to the internet and blogging friends.

  3. Henny, all that food looks delicious! I wish you would post your recipes for the soup and zucchini bread. I love the little goats, they have a really nice house. It is raining to beat the band here right now, it has been one of the most humid and rainy summers that I can remember here in WNC. Wishing I was there to eat with you, Terry

  4. When you make your aprons do you machine the bias binding on both sides or just one side then hand sew the back down?

    1. Hey Maureen. I machine stitch the tape on both sides. I make the bias tape for the aprons and it is not perfect. Sometimes I have to stitch it again from the back side.:) I just looked at your blog and know that you make pretty things. I enjoyed reading your blog and will be back. Thank you for leaving a comment.

    2. Thanks, I have some fabric and bias tape, going to make one soon. I got the pattern a couple of months ago. I wasn't fancying hand stitching the back of the bias tape so good to know you machine stitch.

  5. How many goats are lucky to live in such a nice house, and with their own roses by the fence? The soup looks good!

  6. My feeling has always been that "to do" were especially made to be changed---who can say what tomorrow will bring?

The rose bush in front of the goat barn is lovely. Do they have a wonderful fragrance or are they those modern "improved" kind with no wonderful fragrance at all? I do love roses but don't grow them because 1. the deer love them too, and 2. they (the roses, not the deer, are persnickety and take a lot of taking care of.

I like the aprons, especially the tan one with the dark red markings. And of course you should call it a shop what with all those finely made dolls, aprons, and bonnets sitting there waiting to be sold!

    1. And you are right!! Can I tell you something and use an ugly word? :) A few days ago, I had worked all day doing stuff and was pretty worn out. While cooking supper, I was looking at my "to do" list and realized that I had not done anything on the list. My next entry on the "to do" list was "read the damn list". Okay, my ugly word for the week.

That pink rose bush is a "Knockout" rose, the only kind I can get to grow and bloom. I've given up on all other kinds. That picture was from last summer. I needed a picture of the goat barn for my post. The Knockout roses have not been pretty this summer and I don't understand why. Next February, I plan to cut them all way back and fertilize them good. Maybe that will help.

      Thank you Vic.

Looks like you're getting a lot done around your place, Henny. Your soup looks delish and your aprons are so darling. Your little goats have got it made now with their fancy clean place and fresh hay to boot! Sorry it's so hot by you....hope you get more decent temps soon. Thanks for always great blog...and love your roses! I must admit I have never liked zucchini in anything but your bread does look good! Take care and stay cool!

  11. Oh girl, you wear me out just reading your posts! I wish I had that much energy! Heidi is a little doll baby, isn't she. I miss my goats but I don't miss going out in the weather to take care of them. I love the aprons and I plan on buying one sometime. I just never remember until you show pics.

    Grace & Peace,
    Pam

  12. Never mind that to-do list, you get so much done without it. I suppose you could keep the list just in case you run out of things to do. The soup looks delish! I don't know about you but I never use a recipe for my soups. I start with onion, garlic and celery then I decide what else should go in. Today's soup was tomato, potato, carrot, and red lentils. With lots of cheese on top. DH pronounced it even better than usual.
Your aprons are always lovely. I'm amazed that you can make your own bias tape.
Oh yes, and the zucchini bread? Yum!

  19. It sure looks like you're getting a lot done there. I haven't done anything but sleep for days since my DPT injection. However, today I did make a peach custard pie to use up some of those fresh peaches we got last week at Ham's Peach Orchard. I also like your aprons... although I've never "used" an apron in my life. But they are really cute... as are your little goats.

  20. Your aprons are incredibly beautiful, my friend. And the matching bonnets are darling!

Wishing you a beautiful August. Hugs!

  22. I love that "Vegetable Garden" apron - very pretty! And your sweet goat!! What an irresistible face! I do think we all do as you do: vow we WILL do such-and-such today, and then promptly busy ourselves with four other things :) That's my personal habit too! Stay cool! This evening it's rather cool outside, even though the mosquitoes are quite bad. Glad for that cool though.

  24. You're such a busy girl, but isn't it so true that there is always something to do. One chore waiting on another to get done. That's life. Sometime we just have to throw in the towel and say, I'm taking a day off (or at least an afternoon). Your soup looks delicious and even though you didn't get your spice cabinet cleaned and your mirrors washed, just look at all that you did do. Your goats are going to love their new bed and I'm sure hubby would rather have hot soup and zuccinni bread any day over clean mirrors, LOL.
    Have a sweet weekend.
    Connie :)

  25. Fat back and frying the grease off the meat... never heard of that. I'm Hispanic, my mom does fry pork (fat?) to turn into what we call chicharron. I keep thinking it's something similar.
Anyway, that soup and bread puts me in the mood for a hot and hearty meal in Fall. Can't wait for the change of season, either, not that we should complain or anything.
    Heidi is so pretty!

  26. Hi,
Well, I LOVE my aprons. I will be shopping for another apron soon. :-)
I made zucchini orange cake, it is good. It is always the first thing I bake up with our first zucchini. Your bread looks so good, and makes me want to get baking up some with my next zucchini.

  27. Beautiful looking apron. Healthy and yummy vegetable soup with all healthier vegetables from the garden. Love the cake. Beautiful flowers!

  28. That soup looks amazing. Sorry it's taken me a few days to get back to you, it was a real busy weekend here. Anyway, I THINK the flowers you asked about are spider flowers (cleome), but not absolutely certain. they sure look like it to me, yet they have a more "wild" look to them, really not sure. Hope you had a great weekend, and I do so love your pretty aprons!!

  29. Dear Hennie first your aprons are wonderful. I especially love the veggie one. The soup looks delicious. I am hoping my okra produces...the garden this year has not been at its best...as for the zucchini bread I will stop by for a piece :)! Have a super day.
