It's freezing here!

Boy! Have we ever started the new year off cold! 10 degrees again this morning. It's weather like this that drives me crazy worrying about the animals.

Those in our little barnyard are doing okay, but it's a job keeping water buckets thawed.

Looking out the kitchen window, (above pic) I could see birds waiting in line to get to one of the three feeders.  There were seven Cardinals waiting. They're hard to see now, but if you look closely, you may find them scattered about in the trees. I put some bird seed and a container of water on top of the goat's barn.

I'm carrying water in a pan down to the pond for the ducks, since the little pond is frozen. Being able to swim away keeps the ducks safe from predators during the night, so I worry about them too.

The mess just inside the front door...buckets thawing.

Guess I need to go look outside again. It should be snowing by now. Hope to be back soon. Maybe, just maybe we'll be building a snowman tomorrow!!

Love,
Henny

PS  Thank you Molly Brown for following my blog!!

  1. That's cold, all right! Hopefully all of your animals will be OK. I know you will do all you can to assure that.

  2. makes you wonder how many wild animals die in the winter freezes.

  3. Well, Henny, compare yourself to me! Since you very seldom get these temperatures you're not prepared for them. Since we get these temperatures and much lower, we've learned how to live with them. I hope everything goes well. Keep warm.

    1. Oh Red, I think about you folks a lot and wonder how you deal with the cold and frozen lakes and everything every winter. It's probably warm here, compared to where you are. Thanks!

  4. We've had the cold weather here for days, but no snow. I think that's a good thing for all of us, including the animals, even though I do like the pretty stuff.

    1. Hey Chip Butter. We about an inch of snow here this morning. At least it gives the animals moisture when pond and streams are frozen. At least I hope they eat snow??

  5. We had a little snow and a lot of cold here in NE Texas. Yesterday the high was 20! Maybe the birds would be better off if they moved to a warmer climate? I don't understand why they don't fly farther south like they use to do.

    1. I would sure fly farther south, if I could fly! :) I think it must be cold everywhere right now!

  6. It is just wet and windy in South Wales, I sometimes long for cold dry weather but in reality hard frost makes moving around difficult. I spotted the cardinals, they are a glorious colour.

    1. Hey Pam. It has been really dry here, until the snow that came in over night.

  7. It's been brutally cold here in southern Missouri. (Missoura) I went into our back porch room and found my cat's water was frozen in the dish!
    Happy new year!

    1. Hey Laura, We've been hearing about the cold in Missouri. We have a daughter (my stepdaughter) and family who live in O'Fallon. We visited them there year before last.

  8. I hope this cold weather doesn't last much longer for you. The Bomb Cyclone that we've been hearing about is supposed to be moving very fast and I'm supposing it's the cause of your unusual weather. I saw maps that seemed to show snow in your area. I hope you don't end up getting any. I worry about the animals outside, too. I don't have any, but see the wild ones and feel sorry for them. My suet has been going fast. We get a lot of big flickers and red bellied woodpeckers that eat a lot. I've seen at least 7 different kinds of birds on it. They sure have to hammer hare now that it's frozen. The majority of the country has been having extreme cold. We haven't been above freezing for over a week and went below zero several times. There have been close to 50 water main breaks in the last week. At least you and we aren't buried under many feet of snow. I know it can be worse, so I don't really complain, just acknowledge it and try to move on. I hope everyone along the east coast stays safe and warm indoors. Love seeing your cardinals. I haven't seen many around here since the frigid temperatures hit. I hope they're okay. Stay safe and warm.

    1. It's good to hear from you Peg! I always feel foolish posting about the cold weather with the freezing temperatures and wind and several feet of snow in other places. It's unusual for us to not get above freezing during the day, and we've had several days like that. Yesterday it warmed up to 33. One degree above freezing. Now they're saying we won't get above freezing until Sunday. Sure makes you look forward to spring, doesn't it?

  9. It's cold here also and I understand about your concern about the animals. I do not have any outdoor critters except for the wild ones and my honey bees. I may have lost my bees to this extreme cold and I am losing sleep over it. This is already a tough winter.

    1. Hey Cindy. It has been a tough winter. Hope you haven't lost your bees. I didn't realize the cold hurt the bees. Do they freeze or just leave? I'll have to Google that. :)

  10. Hopefully there will be a thaw this weekend. We had one line freeze the second night of freeze, but it thawed yesterday and others stayed open.
    Take care and God bless.

    1. Yes, I'm looking forward to Sunday when they say the temperature will climb to 36 degree. That will feel pretty warm! Hope no more lines freeze! Take care!

  12. I really feel for you all in the really cold temps. It is very cold down here in s.e. FL this morning. 38 and with wind chill factor feels like it is 26. I have the heater on this morning. :-)

Keep warm as you take care of the critters and yourselves.

  13. It's just awful here this morning. -8C right now with a wind. Poor animals and birds. I try to keep them fed but boy it's getting crazy. I just picked up 50 more pounds of mixed seed yesterday to add to what i have here. Hope it gets them through this bitter cold. Our pileated woodpecker comes by every day now so that is the plus side to this cold. Stay warm and cozy by your fire today when you can.

    1. Deb, I think about you often and wonder how you do it!! It would probably feel warm here, compared to your weather. You sure keep the little critters there fat and happy though. That pileated woodpecker at your feeder is amazing!

    1. Hey Janet. Same here. Our chickens would not come out of their house this morning and walk on the snow, so I made them a path of pines straw. They are so funny!

    1. Oh Janet, I'm hoping this mess melts fast too. We got about an inch last night but it's so darn cold, it won't melt anytime soon.

  16. Hope your animals make it through this cold snap but with your concern and kindness I bet they will be just fine. It's not as much a snap here as it is a siege. Temps in the teens and twenties and night time temps below zero. The duration of this kind of cold has many water meters around town freezing with subsequent water line breaks. Doesn't make for happy folks.

    1. Hey Vic. I really should not post about the cold weather because it's so much worse in other places. We got about an inch of snow last night. Today it's cold and very windy and won't get above freezing again. That is unusual for NC. How much longer until spring?!

  17. Hopefully all is well and you are able to keep all the animals safe, you are doing a wonderful job.

  18. Animals are a lot work in freezing weather, especially hauling and thawing water. And unfortunately I think we are in for several more nights of this. I hope all your friends survive, especially the ducks, without completely wearing you out!

    1. That is so true. When the weather gets like this I wonder why I keep all these animals. I worry most about the ducks with no protection. Bet we could ice skate on the pond...If we could skate! :)

  19. I know that you take special care of your animals. Whether they are pets or wild you have a very warm heart that is just bursting with love for them . . . I'm concerned about your back though. I remember all the trouble you had with it last year. Do take special care.

  20. We have sure been making up for those mild winters we had the last few years! I'm in Missouri and we've had many nights below 0 and most days below freezing often in the single digits. I've been watching all that cold and snow coming in on the east coast - it sounds like you are getting that! All your animals are sure lucky to have you Henny because I know you take good care of them! Goodness, I've never seen so many cardinals in one place - beautiful! We have one cardinal couple here and they look so pretty in the snow.

Stay warm Henny and be careful if you get any ice!

  21. Seems like it is very cold all over. It's been snowing most days here. Temperatures expected below zero here tonight. Hoping all your animals will stay warm and safe.

  22. We've had a rough 24 hours too. Wind and snow and ice. I worry about my chickens, can't keep their water thawed. Our power was out for about 12 hours - brrr! We are better now.

  23. Henny, you are colder than us! We had the ice storm, but the temperatures didn't get that severe. Today things were really starting to melt and we are a few degrees above freezing for the next while. We are hearing about the crazy weather on the eastern side of the continent. I hope you stay safe and your animals are okay. We have been doing a lot of water carrying for the last few weeks. I did read somewhere that you could use a crockpot that has a 'warm' setting to keep your chicken water from freezing. We do have a couple of heated dog bowls that we have used for the chickens when it gets really cold. The weather we had, the water didn't freeze during the day, so we only had to carry it out morning and night.

    1. Mostly our water carrying is because we have shut the water lines off when the weather is freezing.
