Mostly chickens!

Looking out at blue skies and bedspreads blowing in the breeze...why, you would think it spring for sure.

Actually, we started Wednesday morning off with more rain...that's right, more rain! But while Weetie and I were sitting in the vet's office, the sun came out.

The high winds and hard rain from the line of storms that came through Monday morning soaked everything on both porches.

Do you enjoy looking out a window? I sure do! Something else I got from Mama. Anytime she was not busy cooking or cleaning, she was standing at a window looking out.

It's  hardly daylight when the guineas fly down from the cedar tree and gather near the front door...knowing I will be out with a bucket of feed.

Guineas are fun...loud, but fun. The noise from these fifteen can be deafening. They are quiet most of the time, but let a stranger pass, or any critter that doesn't live here, or a snake...especially a snake and they alert everything within five miles...their noise alerts Eli and Weetie to bark, and then the rooster to squawking, alerting the hens, then the hens begin that loud alarm squawking and run for cover...it's deafening!! If Poppy is here, he lets loose a loud whistle ...which is deafening too, and then everything quietens down.

The hens on Henny Penny Lane...

Most seem happy and content, and are laying again. Remember the eight chicks that little jewel hatched last summer. Well honestly, I think all of them are hens, which is hard to believe. Not even one looks like a rooster and surely by now I would be able to tell. Right? The new hens are laying too...small eggs, but they are laying.

Dear friends, I am bound and determined to put this post, such as it is, out there. It has been in the works since the first of the week! :) Monday seem so long ago, I can't remember. Tuesday was a dentist appointment and Wednesday a vet appointment for Weetie...which took up the better part of both  mornings.

Yesterday, lo and behold, I found a minute to rake leaves. Once this weird weather settles down I will finish painting Poppy's shop. That section of red is all that's left to paint. Can you imagine leaving just that much. Once I tire of doing something...I'm done. Well, not really. Actually that is the highest end of the shop and requires standing pretty high up on that ladder. It will be finished!!

I am behind on reading and commenting on my favorite blogs, and have not replied to the nice comments on my last post. Hope you will forgive me. Have I turned into a slow poke in my old age? Heaven forbid! I certainly do keep busy! Thank you! Now I'm off to the grocery store! :(

Love,
Henny

  2. We still wait for rain. The small cedars along the road are white with dust.

  3. I have always called Guineas The Farmyard Policemen, they wake up the geese who will see most intruders off. It is lovely to get washing blowing in the sunshine, it always smells so much fresher for a blow.

  4. I just love your posts! You have quite a menagerie there. I can just hear those quineas! At least no one can prowl around your house and not be detected! Have a great day.

  5. Love all your chickens and hens. Aren't you fortunate to have such lovely weather? I love looking out the window too. That's why I have to have a window over the kitchen sink, so I can look out while I do the dishes!

  6. I fantasize about having chickens and a bunch of dogs laying around. That's why I love to come here often and see what you've been up to. Don't we all wish we could live in the country on a little farm? Yes, I think so!

  7. Oh, yes, line dried sheets and pillow cases smell so delicious as you're slipping off into dreamland. We have a sunny day here as well and I should do some sheets and hang them out but the wind is gusting so much that they might come loose and end up in the next county. Tomorrow the high is supposed to be around 67. Can you imagine?! So I'm hoping to get out and do some more cutting back of perennials and just general moseying around the yard to see what's what.

Your guineas sound like wonderful "watch fowls". If Eli slept outdoors he would bowl over any intruders but the guineas probably do a good job of scaring off any nefarious strangers. You stand well protected I'd say.

  8. I think that is the first shot I've seen of so many of your chickens all together! I'll be so happy if I was wrong about predicting so many roosters in that batch of chicks, and that would be so unusual, and so lucky if they all turned out to be hens! I'm a window looker outer too, and love lots of light coming in. It certainly does look very Spring like in your pictures. We have had soooo much rain here too. Hope Weeties vet vist was for nothing too serious.

  11. I'm a window-gazer, I could sit for hours looking outside at nature's beauty.
I think your chickens lead the life of Riley....in fact everything on your farm, lives the life of Riley *grin*.
Thank you for the get-well wishes Henny, they were greatly appreciated.
    Hugs,

  12. Your description of the bedlam that the Guineas create when they spot something that upsets them made me grin. They do sound noisy, that's for sure.
When we built the addition to the house my view from the kitchen window was mostly blocked so I do dishes with nothing to distract me.

  16. I am seeing a dark, stormy day out my window this afternoon. It has been a busy week here too. I'm totally mixed up as to which day it is.
It's wonderful to know your baby chicks made it to being grown ups!

  17. I did enjoy this post so much...we used to stop at a Hardee's in Brazil, Indiana...it is not a big city, but probably population of 10,000 or so. Two or three times we were there, there was a guinea working the parking lot. It expected food from us...the second itme we did not disappoint. LOL We always wondered where it came from and what happened to it.

  18. It's all about priorities. Sometimes the blog has to take second place. Don't lay guilt on yourself.

  19. If anyone followed you around I am sure they would say you are not a slow poke!! You have a lot of animals and yard to take care of! Glad your hens are laying for you. Nancy
