Happenings on Henny Penny Lane

Don't you appreciate having really "good" neighbors?

Eli and Weetie never fail to let me know when the horses are coming up the road. Yay! it's Robert and Kristine!!

They rescued these four horses and have given them a good home. Feeding them good and giving them lots of love and attention. Robert said he finally got that pony he always wanted for Christmas when he was just a boy. Kristine says, this is a dream come true. They would let me ride too, but I am so afraid. It takes all the nerve I can muster to walk up and pet the horses. Oh, and they are so sweet.

Robert and Kristine brought us five, fifty pound horse feed bags, filled with horse manure for the teeny tiny garden...with a promise of more to come. You know, I've been talking about doing something to improve the garden soil...this just might be it! Robert says this will help me grow tomatoes like they grew this summer.

So, I've cleaned up the teeny tiny garden and spread the horse manure, but left this one sweet little Cosmos still blooming. Out of a pack of seeds, only this one grew, fell over and rooted itself. I couldn't bear to chop it down.

then I moved all the little started plants that might freeze this winter into the teeny tiny greenhouse...

to be warm and cozy for a while.

I suppose it's beginning to look a little like fall here, even though most the leaves are still green on the trees, or brown on the ground. No pretty colors yet.

I put the feed bucket on the car and picked up the rake and could not stop until the driveway was raked clean of brown leaves...

Yesterday I noticed the camellia bushes are in full bloom around the back porch...

the ground was pink with fallen petals...

Poppy and I planted these one gallon potted Camellias back in the mid 90's...

we must have picked the right spot...

Guess that's about it for now. I've been working on the bunny's pen again...a really fun job. I need to post about the bun bun's again and show you how much Miss Penny has grown.

Thank you for your friendship!

Love,
Henny

  3. We had horses when our daughter was growing up, she was horse mad. I had one too. The manure will definitely help your garden. My Camellia won't bloom till after the first of the year.

  4. What lovely neighbors, it's always a good thing to be able to get along, and especially when they come visiting bearing gifts :)
Your flowers are blooming their little hearts out, all this warm weather has helped I'm sure.
It sounds like your trip to Missouri was a grand one, so happy to know you enjoyed your time with family and the road trip wasn't too stressing for you.

  5. I envy your weather. Our leaves have been off the trees for a month. I wish I could get some of the horse manure. My garden soil is very hard.

  8. That gift from your neighbors should really improve your garden!
Rescuing four horses is a big undertaking. It's good to hear it is working out so well for them, and you!

    1. Hey Linda. I know. Rescuing even one horse is a big job and expense. They sure love the horses though.

  9. I learn something about you that surprises or delights me each time I visit. This visit it was a total surprise . . . here's a girl who loves animals, yet is brave around snakes and afraid of horses. You're a complex woman. That horse manure should be great on your garden next year and it is probably good that you spread it now . . . that will give it time to neutralize and become powerful compost :)

    1. Oh Connie, that does sound pretty silly...that I can deal with a snake, but afraid to pet a big gentle horse. I am really afraid of dogs too! :)

  12. Oh I'm jealous of the horse manure. Your garden will love it next year! I've always heard that Roses love horse manure. I wonder if it's true. Maybe they just like extra fertilizer and are not fussy what kind. Have a pleasant week.

    1. I need to try the horse manure around the roses. All the trees around here keep the roses and anything else I try to grow, looking bad. You grow the most beautiful roses!

  13. Oh horse manure is just the thing! Although I have read that cow manure is better for some reason----don't remember why. Maybe fewer weed seeds since they have all those extra stomachs?????? I went out not long ago and got a truck load of horse manure from a stable just outside of town. I'm letting mine cool down over the winter and will spread it in my flower beds with some mulch covering it next spring. It really makes a difference. Wow! 250 pounds must make for a really big pile.

The camellias are just beautiful. I wish they would grow this far north but I don't think they do. Too cold for them although today it was up in the high 70's----maybe we won't have any winter this year?

My yard out front is about 3 inches deep in pine needles with still more on the tree (It's a very tall white pine) waiting to come down. I'm waiting till the last one falls before I start raking them up. No point in doing it twice and they are a lot harder to rake than leaves.

    1. Hey Vic. You must have a beautiful yard! There is so much that need to be done here. So much I want to plant but we have too many trees and too much shade. Guess I will just plan the garden for next spring and use a couple of rows for flowers.

  14. Hey my sweet Aunt!! I have flowers blooming to. Stuff came back up from seeds. I have a neighbor that has a dogwood blooming. I wonder what kind of winter we will have? We are not going to move in grandma's house. It needs a lot of work. We just wanted it to keep in the family. Love you bunches!

    1. I wonder too Vicki. There are a few azalea blooms here and a few blooms on the flowering quince. Well at least you have your grandma's place and all the fruit and nut trees around it. That;s wonderful! Love you too!

    1. Gail, I think a horse is the most beautiful creature and hate that I am so afraid of them. I really enjoy having them ride past the house.

  16. OH what pretty horses! So glad you can pet them, even though you dont want to ride. I have the same camellias as you and ours are in full bloom too! I always eagerly await the first camellias of the Fall--they bloom all winter here. I love your little greenhouse!

  17. Gorgeous camellias! I just told Paul today that we need to plant some. One of the thInge I love about living here is the flowers that bloom in the fall and early winter. Before you know it the spring flowers are blooming!

  18. That's true Cynthia. One of the things I remember about living in Summerville SC were the big azaleas and camellias. Bet you are enjoying your new home.

  19. Those Camellias are beautiful! I hope it is aged horse manure! We grew great tomatoes one year with some aged manure, we had a few weeds too but it was worth it! :)
