Sometimes I ...

just feel like going back in time so I pulled out my old homemade pantaloons and muslin apron...

the feeling was wonderful except when I turned to hook the gate Poppy had followed me with the camera. "Oh, good grief", I said but continued on to enjoy the day, in my little old-fashioned way. :)

The teeny tiny garden looks pretty good and has grown since these pictures were taken last week...

Instead of the usual wattle fence I love to build, Poppy ordered garden stakes for me. I am weaving twine in and out...that's fun too. Will have to take new pictures.

Anyhow, see the little row of corn back against the fence? It seems to be doing well. Let me explain. Last summer a blogging friend to many of us, Rose, at Pics & Pieces, asked if I had ever tried growing old timey Hickory Cane Corn. She said when she was young that's what they grew, and they also planted cornfield beans along with the corn.

So, searching online I found Hickory Cane Corn and Cornfield Bean seeds for sale and ordered both...

I just ran up to the garden. Whew! Here's a close-up...

and here's the little row of corn today...

and, while I'm at it, might as well bore you with one more of the woven bean fence...

Oh, my goodness! We've waited all winter for this! So, keeping with my old-fashioned feeling, I went behind the house and pulled our two old rusty lawn chairs to the front...

I like them here, do you? Why I remember chairs just like these sitting under a big shade tree at Aunt Ruby's house. Poppy and I found these chairs at the landfill a few years back and I just had to have them. :)

Have also been busy dividing and repotting root-bound plants and potting up cutting. "When are you going to start selling some of these", Poppy asks. Well, I've thought about putting a little note on "Nextdoor"... Eggs, Plants, Bonnets, & Aprons for sale here. Sounds fun, doesn't it?

But we'll see. You know, because of the deer, I have given up on growing roses in the yard. Given up!! All the roses are now in pots inside the garden gate with no more worries...

Well friends, thank you if you are still here. I sure can go on and on about things. I will leave you with a picture of Eli and Ellie. You know, Eli is going on 11 years old now and his age is really showing. We can no longer take our long walks to the highway and back. His back legs just won't hold up. He is still our sweetie pie though, our special Eli.

Love, Henny

  3. if you will go to a barber shop and or beauty salon, ask them to save the cuttings of hair, spread it all over your yard the deer will not bother your grass or plants. Watch The Rookie a movie starring Dennis Quaid. It is shown in that movie.

  4. Eli & Ellie are gorgeous! And your garden is amazing! I am impressed that you even make your own fences! Everything looks so pretty and healthy, and there are different little places to just wander to and look. I love your hanging sun!

  5. What a wOnDeRfUl post! I loved every photo, but I admit my favorite is the last of Eli and Ellie. They are such beautiful and gentle dogs. Or should I say, babies? I agree with Poppy that you should sell some of your plants and beautiful bonnets and aprons. I love your outfit. It looks cool and comfy for the hot days ahead. I'm so glad to see you back posting.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  6. I say wear what you are comfortable in, that's what matters. Me, I'd be lost without my jeans and teeshirts. :)
Everything looking terrific around your place. Love the old chairs. Love the picture of Eli and Ellie. I just want to give each one a big hug.

  7. Old-timey suits you, in clothing and gardening and outdoor chairs, and everything else.

  8. Eli may be 11 but he still can mess up your plants ( I'm referring to your comment on my blog about how he managed to get tangled up in your clematis). Your garden is huge and not a single weed do I see. I'm glad you could protect your roses from the deer. Hopefully they don't eat any of the vegetables that you're growing. I like your old chairs. I hope you actually do sit down and relax :)

  9. Girl, I was so excited to see your post and, like always, I am leaving wishing I could sit with you and have a glass of iced tea. The chairs are waiting for us, aren't they? LoL. Missed you, my friend!

    Grace & Peace,
    Pam

That first picture is a doozy! I love it and you in your cute outfit! Looks like things are really growing well in your garden. The corn and beans look so good. That picture of your house with the two chairs is lovely...I would like to come right over and sit right down with you! Your roses are looking awesome too. They're my favorite flower. Ending your post with beautiful Eli and Ellie was perfect. Take good care Melba and Poppy. God bless and love you!

  12. It's bright and early over here in the UK...
Sun's out, in full force, little rain earlier, but looks
like a lovely day.....Breakfast over and done with....
You have made me chuckle already to~day....HeHe! :)
Pantaloons...I remember my old Gran and Grandad...
When they were on the line, drying, with all the other
underwear, belonging to Granny....My Grandad always
referred them as....'Passion Killers' HeHe! And, l still
remember it to this day...! :O).
And...I certainly love old cloths, especially from the sixties,
l have a sixties wardrobe in my bedroom, the wardrobe's
not from the sixties, but the contents are....!
But, my most favourite dress era is the Regency era..Love it.

Must say, it's 'all' looking lovely and colourful around the
home Henny...Very nice, all coming on, you work very hard,
    and the results are amazing...
As l've said many times before, l love seeing plants and flowers,
growing in gardens, hedgerows, and pots...and 'not' cut, put in
a vase on the dinning room windowsill....! That in my book is sacrilege..! :(

And...As far as your posts are concerned, you can 'go on' as long as you
    like..I love'em....Bless..!
Oh! And l hope your putting out, one or two roses out for the deer, just to
    keep them happy...You can't deprive them of a few roses....HeHe! Bless..! :O)

  13. You look very comfortable in those clothes. Look at all those potted plants! My goodness, you really should sell them. Those chairs look so inviting, with a few tall glasses of iced cold lemonade or iced tea.

  14. It's been a very pretty spring with all the rain we've had, hasn't it? So many things are doing better this year than last year. I'm so thankful for rain! Your 2 pups are so beautiful :)

  15. You look so cute! I love old fashioned things too, and the feel they evoke.
    The garden is fabulous!

  16. Henny,
I love your gardening clothes and your comment "Good Grief", made me smile! It was so good seeing your garden and reading about your gardening chores...yes, deer can be such a nuisance. They found my sunflower garden out front and ate the heads off quite a few of my growing sunflowers last week!😩 ( this is the first year this has happened). Not willing to give up, I went outside and replanted between the rows...it is late, but sunflowers grow fast when the weather is right. I will continue to dream of my sunflowers garden and blooms to cut and bring inside.

  18. It's wonderful to hear your doing well.
    Your cute outfit suits you.
The garden is beautiful and well kept.
I also rescue chairs from the trash.
    Wood rocking chairs,old wicker baskets,
    Vintage tables.
The wooden rocker I rescued I have had
    for a long time.
However the new expensive rocker I paid
Over 200 dollars for a few years ago has fallen apart.
I love seeing pictures of Eli.
He's as beautiful now as he has ever been. The deer have eaten my green beans to the ground.
The also ate my giant sunflower patch to the ground as well.
However I am happy to report they have not bothered my antique roses.
I guess since they are enjoying the buffet
Of my garden, they aren't interested in roses!

  19. I love your gardening outfit...it is just perfect. What a lovely garden you all have and goodness, I know the harvest is going to be big. We actually live just a few blocks from downtown (our town is very small) so we do not have a garden and I really miss having all the home grown veggies. However, we do have a very nice farmers market near by and the prices are very reasonable. You all have such a neat place and I think your chairs look great in the area you have placed them in. Happy Saturday to you...

  20. Lovely to see you again Henny, and I simply covet your gardening attire, so pretty and comfortable -looking.
Your days are always filled to the brim with chores, do you ever just rest ?
Each year you amaze me with your tiny tiny garden, you tend with such care and devotion.
Beautiful Eli and of course Ellie, you can see the love they have for you in their faces.
    Be well dear friend.
    Hugs,
    Jo
