I don't feel any older

Hey friends, I didn't mean to go away and stay so long. Guess today, September 14th., is good a day as any to do a post...it's my birthday!

Normally, I don't mention my birthday, and probably would not have thought about it today except Poppy was sitting at the bar eating his morning cereal when he looked up and said, "oh, Happy Birthday".

Did you have birthday parties, growing up? I remember one. It was when I turned thirteen. Oh, it was a blast! We were living in Robbins, just the best little town in North Carolina...and this is the very living room...

where I, and all my friends, sat on the floor playing, "spin the bottle".  So exciting...I got to walk around the block with Ronnie G. the cutest boy in class. There were lots of presents to open and it's funny, the gift from Ronnie was a small jewelry box made of wood with the mirror missing from inside the lid. I remember hearing mama say, it probably belonged to Ronnie's mother. That was fine with me!

Don't have any pictures  from that party, but this is me, twelve years old and only two months before my thirteenth birthday...

Can you imagine! Guess no one told me plaids and flowers don't go together, and where did that Chinese hat come from? No wonder I didn't have a boyfriend! Well, I was always more interested in dolls than boys anyhow.

Oh, about the folks in the living room picture...

had nothing to do with my birthday, just wanted to show you where my party was held. This picture was taken after a big Thanksgiving dinner back in the 1950s and that was my Uncle Myron on the left, Cousin Clyde, Cousin John in the cowboy suit, and his dad, my Uncle Bill. The foot showing in the picture was daddy's.

So, how about a shot of me in a bathing suit...

As I said, no wonder I didn's have a boy friend. :) Okay, enough about me and my birthday.

Have another doll to show you...

Remember the Tomy, "Kimberly" doll? This doll came out the same year as the famous "Cabbage Patch" dolls, which is why "Kimberly" never made it that big.  But isn't she beautiful?

Actually, I have two Kimberly dolls; found both in a thrift store several years ago...

and both dolls have ink marks that wouldn't come off. Had to make them some clothes too. Anyhow...

I've been busy making tiny dolls for the upcoming craft show. It's tedious work but I love it...

most of these are not finished.

Well, thank you for visiting. Hope I didn't bore you with a post about me. Hope to be back soon...oh, to tell you about the succelents.

Love,

Henny

  4. Happy, Happy, Happy Birthday my sweet friend. Wishing you a lovely day. I enjoyed hearing about your growing up years and I think you were beautiful back then too. I was a gangly, awkward 13 year old. Now I'm a chubby, tall 61 year old! Not much has changed!
I hope you get to have some cake today. Love those beautiful dolls and the clothes you made for them. I do remember them. And the sweet clothespin dolls too. You are a gift to me everyday.
    Blessings and love,
    Betsy

  5. Happy Birthday Henny! I'm not sure that everyone at 13 isn't awkward and gangly. I certainly didn't have a boyfriend either at that age... (was more into horses). And my birthday was always celebrated at the 4th of July picnic on the lake (since it was July 6th). I can't actually remember ever having a party at our house. But your living room looks a like like ours did in the 50's.
And your dolls are beautiful. I was more into baby dolls, like Tiny Tears, Little Ricky, etc.

  6. Henny, short hair when young and now you have long hair! Love it. Happy Birthday. No parties at this stage of my life.
We have accumulated 20 plus years of our own Hallmark cards back and forth to each other for every occasion, so my
husband and I just pull them out and pick one off the bottom of the stack and reuse, lol. Fun to get one that had been
dated by one of us in the 80's and 90's. Black and white photos are the ones I remember, and also fun to go back through. Glad you still have ones to look at. Now the dolls, love Kimberly and the clothes pin dolls. I never did like the Cabbage Patch ones, but since I was in my early 30's when they came out, no one asked my opinion. I always loved dolls, got a new one every Christmas and never mussed up their hair in all they toy life. Have a great day.

  11. Happy, Happy Birthday to you! All birthdays are cause for celebration. =) Love the photo of you in the vintage swimsuit. I loved the swimming costumes of that era. Those dolls you are fashioning for the upcoming show are gorgeous. Hope you have a great time.

  13. Happy Birthday! I thought about you when I woke up this morning because I had put your birthdate on my calendar! I hope you have had a wonderful day. I love those pictures of you as a beautiful young lady. I like seeing the inner tubes too. We always used those in the water when I was young and now I don't think anyone uses them. Your dolls are beautiful and as soon as I saw them I knew you had made their outfits! The tiny dolls you are making for the craft show are just wonderful! They are all so cute and I saw some little boy dolls with suspenders in one picture. After raising two boys I can tell you I wish there were more little boy dolls. You will sell out of every one of those wonderful little boy and girl dolls!

I hope you've enjoyed your special day today!

  14. A very Happy Birthday to you. 🎈Had a few birthday parties growing up when I was little. The one that stands out was when I was in the 5th grade. All the girls from my glass came over to my house for a luncheon. My mom made little sandwiches cut in triangles. Chunks of pineapple and cherries were held together with toothpicks. We all felt so grown up. We talked about it for years!

  16. Happy Birthday, dear friend. I should have remembered that your birthday is today because it's also my grandson's birthday. The older of my 2 grandsons. He's now 22. Where have the years gone?
I love the old pictures. Black & white ones, with assorted people that we sometimes don't even remember.
Your Kimberly doll is so cute and I love her dress and apron ( or is it a pinafore?)
    Stay well. (((hugs)))

  18. Oh my, I love your growing up pictures. You make a good bathing beauty in the swimsuit one. Most all my birthdays were celebrated with just my family. Not very exciting but the presents were always fun.

Hope your day was a good one.

    1. Thank you Diane. Oh, that house with the big windows. We absolutely loved living there. Mama had a sewing room in that house and it had windows all around too. Those were the good years, before things went bad.

  21. Happy Birthday! Hope you had a special day. I enjoyed seeing your dolls that you shared with us today. They have some wonderful clothes that you have sewn for them. (Sometimes a Mr. Clean sponge helps wash away markings on dolls). Your tiny dolls have beautiful hair. You are very creative!

  31. HAPPY BIRTHDAY HENNY!!! It was my birthday, too - my 82nd!!! And I still play with dolls. In our family we didn't have parties when I was growing up, but I can remember my 13th birthday. My Dad gave me a red wallet, and I went with a friend to a fair where I got sick on a ride. My parents were coming out of the Depression and never experienced any kind of parties. I grew up not even knowing when my parents' birthdays were! I hope you had a beautiful day with many, many more to come! I had a nice day, too, mainly in thanksgiving to God for bringing me this far. Every day's a gift in itself!

    1. Ruth, thank you! Happy Birthday to you! I'm so glad you told me that we have the same birthday. I needed your comment yesterday as I felt just a little gloomy, and don't even know why. I love what you wrote..."Every day's a gift in itself". I am very thankful for each day God gives me. Thank you and Happy Birthday!

  34. First off, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, dear Henny! Ha! I had those very same bangs as my mother said I had a “high forehead” and felt we needed to keep it covered. Ha! Again. I still have bangs! I only had birthday parties for family, never for friends. I always chose an angel food cake with no frosting and I still don’t much like frosting. And most of my gifts were plaid cotton “school dresses” since my birthday was just after school started for the year. Love your old photos and memories!

  37. Happy Belated Birthday, Henny. I hope Poppy did something special for you that day...like cook dinner or dinner out. :-)
I had one this summer, too, so we are both a year older. I do feel it, though. lol
I love all the old black and white photos we have of family get-togethers. They are absolute treasures now as most of the folks have passed on. Sometimes I get quite nostalgic looking at them. I hope you do well at your next sale. I know I love the little clothes pin doll you sent me many moons ago. It sits on a shelf in my loft where I love to sit and read.
Hugs to everyone, especially 'ol Smokey. xo

  41. Wishing you a late happy birthday! I hope you had a really nice day.
Love your Kimberley dolls, so much nicer than Cabbage Patch ones (in my opinion anyway). She has a really sweet face - seems so hard now to find a doll that is pretty and doesn't have some strange expression fixed on it's face. I must be getting old!
Good luck at your craft fair :)
