Way too much!

Whew! Have I been busy!

Poppy says, all the time, "Mel, you do a lot of stuff that you don't HAVE to do", and "Mel, you've got all these animals spoiled".

Well, poor Mrs. Duck. All she wanted was a little of the chicken's laying mash and a little pot of water.  She thanked me over and over.

Then Wilder showed up and asked for a little pile of pellets and some whole corn.  Said he noticed that Bun Bun and the other rabbits, each get their own bowl of pellets. So what was I to do?

By the way, did you notice the food scraps in the pan by the bucket? Scraps for the chickens, and Weetie there pretending to guard it all for me. But I know Weetie. She is actually waiting for a chance to eat that spaghetti, mixed in with the scraps.  :)

Seriously, there is no sense in anybody finding as much to do as I do! Of course, Hurricane Isaias blowing through last Monday night didn't help any...

The wind and rain has turned the teeny tiny garden into a teeny tiny jungle...
I've simply got to pull up some plants and make a path.

Anyhow, we woke up Tuesday morning, after the passing of Hurricane Isaias, to a soggy wet yard full of sticks and tree limbs and our little front porch and everything on it, standing in water, including boots and Crocs. No damage, just a mess to clean up.

Plus, the wind must have blown down a bird's nest, a Dove's nest. I found this tiny baby Dove sitting on a cinder block near the compost bin...
I have been feeding the little Dove for five days, so it's looks have improved a lot. When I found  it, it's feathers still looked like little quills. Hoping the mother Dove will hear her baby and come to the back porch.

To feed the baby, I am mixing wheat germ and cornmeal with warm water and adding strained chicken baby food. I fill the rubber end of a dropper and with his beak he sucks the mixture, much like a baby Dove drinks crop milk from it's mother.

Rarely does Poppy walk outside that he doesn't yell for me to, "hurry, and bring the camera"!
Got a picture just before this big Locust flew away.

and back to the teeny tiny garden jungle...
This has definitely been the best year we've had in a long time for tomatoes. Haven't had much luck with peppers or eggplant either, but...
all the rain we've had in the last week or so has brought the yard long green beans back to life. Why, we had four thunderstorms yesterday!

Oh, did you hear? North Carolina had an earthquake this morning! In a town called Sparta...not so very far from here! How scary! Measured 5.1  Very scary!

Well, better go. Time to think about supper, and besides that, got animals waiting...

Once again, I will be around to catch up. Sorry for posting so much at once. Just had so much I wanted to share, and this is not all! But don't leave, I'm done for today. :)  Thank you for visiting, well, if you're still here.

Love,
Henny

    1. No, not here. In fact, I didn't know about the quake until my daughter called. Thank you Denny.

  2. You have been busy, Henny! That insect -- locust? or cicada?

    1. Hey, I just looked up Cicada and it does look like Poppy's bug. I looked up Locust again and grasshoppers popped up...along with a picture of a Locust titled "Locust aka Cicada". Are they the same?

    2. Locust are totally different species to Cicada...
Although they are sometimes called "locusts", this
is a misnomer, as cicadas belong to the taxonomic
      order Hemiptera or (true bugs)...
And true locusts chew the plants they consume, while
      Cicadas suck fluids from trees...
      AND..You can always read...Exodus 10:12...in the Bible..!

  3. Well, I looked up Locust and the picture looked just like the bug in Poppy's hand. I will look up Cicada now. Need to know. :) Thank you.

  4. I know how much work feeding a baby bird is so bless your heart. I hope momma isn't far and will be ready to meet up with it soon.
The one we cared for was a starling and mom did stick close. Our gardens are a tangled mess from rain and wind. I have a bunch of tomato plants to re-stake tomorrow.I found this summer really hard to garden; either heavy rain or hot humid days for weeks. I'm glad it is coming to an end. Look at all those adorable critters. I would be spoiling them too and would be hearing the same from the retired-guy. lol
Enjoy the new week ahead and stay safe. Earthquake...geesh!

  5. Well Poppy might just have something there about the spoiled animals. But it is good that you are taking care of the baby Dove. How often do you have to feed him?

Good that you didn't have any damage from the hurricane or the earthquake. It begins to seem like the apocalypse is upon us with one bad thing and then another coming hard on its heels.

Cicadas are really interesting. The Big 13 Year Brood will be coming out of the ground around here next year----millions of them! A most interesting phenomenon. To me the most interesting thing is that they come out little by little and start their singing. As more and more come up the noise is just continuous. But at some point their two note song becomes synchronized. It's really loud and a little bit spooky, but most interesting.

  6. It's so nice to see your garden doing well. And your critters too! Of course, you must comply with their requests. That's the humans job!

  7. Your sure are busy with all your animals dear Henny Penny. Those tomatoes look amazing! Love the look on Wheaties face as she keeps guard over the chickens scraps. Just priceless.

  8. My goodness Henny, what interesting stories you tell today. You take such good care of all your critters....wild and tame....and your garden, wowwee...it has really grown. and sooooo many tomatoes. You're taking good care of the little dove....good for you. And many thunderstorms, a hurricane and now an earthquake. Yikes.....what a summer. Take good care and hope you come back again soon!

  9. Your animals all enjoy the loving care you lavish on them. No wonder they all come looking for you. I hope your little Dove grows strong enough to fend for itself.
So good to know that the storm didn't do any damage just left a big mess for you to clean up.
Whatever that insect is on Poppy's hand it gives me the creeps.

  10. You are like a modern day Beatrix Potter with all of your animals, wild and tame. I hope that little baby dove survives and its mother finds it. That's a lot of work, taking care of a baby! I'm pretty sure you had a cicada there. I am looking forward to a bounty of tomatoes, just like yours. -Jenn

  11. I've been thinking about you with that hurricane going your way. I'm sorry you have a mess to deal with but so glad you are all safe. You are an angel saving that sweet little bird! I know that is a lot of work feeding a young bird but at least they do grow quickly. I just love seeing all your sweet animals on your beautiful little farm! Well of course you spoil them! I would too!

My Dad used to pick up cicada shells and they did look a lot like that bug Poppy is holding. I know they only come every so many years just like locusts. That's about all I know about them though. My Dad was always being silly with the shells and he would put them on his nose to tease the grandchildren.

Your tomatoes sure do look good Henny! I bet they are just delicious! You all stay safe now!xxx

  12. Of course I'm still here. I love to see the things you've been doing. There is never a dull momment around your home is there? Saving baby doves, dealing with hurricanes, earthquakes and locusts. Your garden is incredible. Most people I know say they have lots of tomatoes but none are ripening. Look at yours! Such a bounty.
Thank you again for Piper's dolls. She loves them so much. You are a sweetheart.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  14. Hi Henny- You've been very busy and weathered the Hurricane too- I always thought Hurricanes were coastal- seems not! Great crop of Tomatoes- I grew Tomatoes here many years ago and ended up making Tomato Relish and jarring it all- lasted months. Stay Well there. Cheers. KEV.

  15. What a great life your babies all have...and you and your hubby enjoy it all, it seems. Thank you for sharing..what a sweet blog you have..it brightens my day...love it all.

  16. Henny, I read about the rainfall you've had, and also the earth quake. All that and all the animals to feed too. Keeps you on your toes. Our cicadas are singing like crazy, only saw one on the ground so far. You are drowning in tomatoes. That will keep you going for a while. Glad the storm did no damage, but can see the over growth in the garden is a bit
of a job to get through. We ended up with 3 days of rain from the same hurricane last week. Strange how it swirled
    around over Ohio for days.

  17. I was surprised to here about that earthquake. Terry and I have just moved to California the land of earthquakes! Our grands live on this mountain with us. The idea is to raise animals. Registered ones that people pay a lot of money for when they buy them. Californians spend way too much money just to be "hoity", lol.

  20. Dear Sweet Melba, Visiting your blog is like spending a day with Beatrix Potter. That's what your posts remind me of; you and she have kindred spirits.

  21. Hi,
Our tomatoes are doing well this year as well. Our peppers not so much.
I love your posts and always enjoy seeing the animals.
Poppy sounds like a fun fella, anyone who loves to share nature with others is special in my book. ;-)

  22. You are such an earth mother. All of your animals love you. And I'm sure you'll get that blown apart garden back in shape in no time.

  23. We felt the Carolina earthquake way down here in Georgetown! What beautiful tomatoes you have this year. We’ve done okay with ours but we’ve been supplementing them from the farmers market so that we can be extravagant with their use. I bet when you sort out your jungle, er garden you are going to find lots of delicious surprises. I do love how you spoil your four-footed friends with special treats and I know they repay you with love and adoration. Good luck with the little dove.

  26. I was wondering how you survived the storm. You are such a wonderful person to take such good care of all the critters:)

  27. You are a true animal-lover sweet lady, your efforts always with the animal's comfort and welfare in mind.
I noticed the little brick and stepping stone to ease the path from the nesting basket to the cage floor for your tiny dove, who by the way, looks quite healthy and content !
Summer storms are the worst, they carry so much energy, from those soupy, sun-filled days, I'm happy to know, there was no damage at your farm.
Thank you for sharing such a lovely post.
    Hugs,
    ~Jo

  32. Hi Henny! Love this post! I’ve been a follower from day 1. But I’m having trouble sending you comments for some reason. Not sure why. I wanted to tell you about something I think you will love on Instagram. It has a dog just like Eli and the setting is the Swiss Alps! They are beautiful videos with beautiful music! The scenery is gorgeous. It’s Rastawhiteshepard. I just know you will love this site on Instagram. Thank you for your postings! Hope you get this! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Hugs from Darlene from Calif.
