Cat Post

Well, it hasn't rained as much this weekend as the weatherman predicted. We did get a shower or two early yesterday, but the rest of the day was just cloudy.

This morning at 5:30 when Eli, Weetie, and I went out, the temperature was 67 degrees. Is this not still February!!! No complaints here!

Look who else was out early.

Was this a thirsty cat, or a trick? "Come on fellas, don't be frightened, there's plenty of room for the three of us".
Smokey is a hunter, that's for sure, but there were no Cardinals bagged today.

Nope, he came on in the house and went to sleep. All the animals seem to like the new rug, of course!

Every morning I get up afraid of what I might find on that new rug. Are we the only folks with cats that throw up??  No one ever talks about it, so I've been afraid to mention it.

Actually, Smokey has never ever thrown up...but the other two! Oh my gosh! Dumper throws up hairballs. Bickett throws up just because he can. He knows I'll worry that he may be hungry again, since all his food ended up on the floor, and open another can.

Here's a hint for cat owners...Cereal boxes! Especially the nice stiff ones like Wheaties and Grapenuts. Any time we empty a box I cut the front and back into four squares and keep a stack of the squares in the laundry room. Two pieces of cardboard and a plastic grocery bag is perfect for cleaning up messes, even on carpet. Just go with the grain and it comes up perfectly. Then clean the spot.

These cardboard squares also help with the litter box. Why, I don't think Bickett has ever wet in the center of the litter box. It's always on the side, covered in clumping litter.

Yes, I am talking about you too, Dumperoo!

This was Dumperoo watching the squirrels and birds just outside the sewing room this morning...

so I walked outside to see his face. Silly kitty!

These are not the greatest pictures but all I've got. Hope you're having a good Sunday.

Love,
Henny

  1. It's normal for cats to throw up.It looks horrible I know- and yuck to clean up.Luckily our cat seems to throw up outside or on the slate floor. We can usually tell when she's about to do it, so can move her to the slate if she's on the carpet. Vinegar is a good cleaner.I use vinegar for the bathroom...etc.It shines metal sinks too.
    Love your posts!

    1. Thank you Judy! Lots of times I can move Bickett off the carpet in time, but Dumperoo runs and throws up, spreading it down the hallway. I will try vinegar. Thank you!

    2. My daughter uses a spray bottle to mix up water, vinegar and baking soda. She shakes it every time she uses it. She cleans the bathtub, counters and sinks with it. With little kids she's always spraying her counters and wiping them with the mixture. The vinegar smells dissipates quickly and it does leave everything nice and clean.

  2. In share your pain, Miss Kitty is a master hairball producer. The vet says she has feline alopecia and likes to lick, so lots of hairball.

    1. Hey Janet. Dumperoo licks himself all the time, and he is the one that throws up hair. Just pure hair!

  3. I removed 'throw-up' from the kitties just this morning, at least it was on the porch rug, my husband thought it was possum scat, since we have a visitor every night.
Sometimes my Oliver cat eats, and throws it all back up before a few minutes have passed ?!
I love your pictures on this rainy, winter afternoon they made me smile :)

  4. My cats do it all the time :( Its always a race to keep the dog away from it but what would a house be without pets

    1. Oh my gosh! It's the same here. I think Weetie walk and waits for Bickett to throw up! :) I can't imaging life without pets.

  5. Yes, Ghost, our cat that sleeps with us just had an especially bad night. She upchucked several times last night. Luckily she's pretty good about getting off the bed to upchuck on the hardwood floor. Think she had a stubborn hair ball as it took her more than her usual 3 times. But eventually she got it up. Our house has no more carpet, most is either slate, tile, or hardwood... easier with cats.

    1. Oh my goodness. Dumperoo sleeps on my side of the bed and the same thing happened a few nights ago, except he didn't quite make it off the bed. I would love to change all this carpet to hardwood, but Poppy LOVES the carpet.

  7. Our kitty used to throw up quite a bit but we changed brands of kitty litter and noticed it was happening less when we did.. The one brand had a lot of dust to it and I think the dust got in her fur and when she was cleaning her fur was ingesting it. Maybe it was coincidence but it really did seem to help. You do feel sorry for them as it seems really hard on them.

    1. That's an idea. I did recently switch to a littler with less dust. I think Dumperoo licks too much hair and gets too many hairballs. Bickett throws up his food. I do feel sorry for them. Throwing up is hard. Thank you Lynn!

  8. Our cat was a champion barfer, and almost always on the white carpet. Between that and bringing in bloody rodent catches, she trashed our family room carpet. When I inherited some money, we had the whole downstairs carpet replaced with hardwood. Much easier to clean up, and no stains. Our three previous cats never vomited.

    1. And on white carpet! Their throw-up really stains too. I would love to pull up all this carpet! But Poppy loves carpet!

  10. Your not the only one with cats that throw up. We've had a lot of cats over the years and some seem to be more likely to than others. It can be hairballs, or they eat something they shouldn't, or in some cases they simply eat too fast. Our little Sophie will eat too fast and then get sick so if I catch her overdoing it on the food I will distract her with something and it will often help. We have some hairball medicine that comes in a tube that does seem to help as well. Thank you for the cereal box tip on cleaning it up! That's great!

I love the picture of Dumperoo in the window! So cute! You know Deb (at Just Cats) will love that one too as she loves cats in windows!

    Take care Henny!

    1. Hey Bonnie! You know, I wondered for the longest time if ours were the only cats the threw up. That maybe I was doing something wrong. Bickett overeats too. I did buy a tube of that hairball medicine, but tricking Dumperoo into tasting a bit of it is impossible. I've even tried putting a dab on his paw, but he hops around on three paws while he shakes the paw with cream on it. Cat are funny, aren't they?

I thought about Deb when I posted that picture. I miss Deb posting every day. I love her blog!

  12. How sweet - his little face in the window. He's watching you too, haha! Well ... we don't have cats. I'm very allergic, sorry to say. I would love to have 2 cats. They are so very decorative. I want cats that will lounge around on the backs of couches and yawn at me. Our Pomeranian, however, is mostly cat, and he does hack up stuff. Threw up on our bed a few months ago. He licks himself and ends up with hair balls, I suspect.

    1. Well, a Pomeranian sounds like a good substitute for a cat. My husband say there will be no more cats here...that if he dies first, I can have a dozen cats after he's gone. He complains, but ever time he sits down, Dumperoo jumps in his lap. :)

  13. I'm not really a cat person and after reading all the comments about cat barf I'm kind of glad. Bracken rarely throws up but he's been known to make himself sick eating compost. We just got that pick-up load of it and must keep it out of his reach!

    1. Oh I've never heard of a dog eating compost. That's funny. I love the name Bracken.

  15. Haha, funny how just about everyone has upchucking cats! Bella used to leave her's (hairballs) on the bed in the spare room. So now there is another cover over the duvet. We did change her to raw food in November and it seems to me the upchucking is now almost none existent.

    1. Oh my, raw food must be best for cats too! I'll have go on line and read. Thank you!

  19. Tim is lying in my lap, blocking my laptop view. Cats are so funny. He has never thrown up. I think it's because he's so young. We had a darling dog with a sensitive stomach. That's why we don't have much carpet anymore!

  23. Once in awhile Rosie throws up but only when she is really hungry and eats too much too fast. I'll have to try your cereal box trick. I'm glad Smoky didn't have a hankering for cardinal for breakfast!

  24. I love that you went outside to get the picture of your sweet kitty looking through the window. We aren't getting much rain either. It seems all it can do here is drizzle.

  25. Dumperoo is a beauty. And what is it about cats at the window that you feel so happy and peaceful just looking at them? I have a very romantic idea of cats because the thought of cleaning up after their barf doesn't turn me off! Hoping you're well:)

  28. My daughters 16 year old cat vomits just about everyday...I suppose because he can. When we had cats they would cough up hairballs but then I got some goop in a tube that prevented hair balls...our cats loved it. Life with animals is always an adventure:)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Our cat, who is about 18 now, has regularly vomited since she came to live with us when she was about 2. Not hairballs, always food and/or grass that she has eaten without bothering to chew. She always vomits 3 times in different places, so you sort have to look carefully to find the spots.
