News

First, a few things I need to say...

"Thank you", new followers. I appreciate you so much.

and thank you all for the comments on my last post. By the way, my perm turned out just fine...thank you very much, Poppy!

Several of you suggested a leaf blower for all these leaves. Well, I'm ashamed to admit it but we have three. Poppy has a big old red gas powered leaf blower and I have two electric leaf blowers...or leaf vacs.

and since you've never seen inside our little junky red shed...
Several years ago, Poppy used the gas blower a lot! The last time he used it, after walking just a few feet he had such a bank of leaves stretched across the yard that we had to stop and haul them into the woods by the sheet load.

Once I took it upon myself to rake the leaves, he hung the big red blower on a nail and has not used it since.

The third and newest leaf blower.

Poppy has promised, that he will crank up that old blower and help with the leaves...he just didn't say what year!

Lets switch to a much sweeter subject...
This adorable Christmas card came to Poppy and me from Deb at justcats-deb.blogspot.com  with the sweetest gift...

three little kittens for our tree, and...

Chocolates! The beautiful card looks like Deb's yard in winter. Even the two little chipmunks look like her little Simon who lives under their old pump, with his little girlfriend. Deb keeps the birds and squirrels fed through the winter, along with the deer and bunnies, and any other hungry little animal that comes visiting. It is worth visiting Deb's blog just to meet her two cats...funny Audrey, and sweet Annie. Deb, thank you so much for the gift and for your friendship.

Hope to be back soon. We could see snow by the weekend!!! Imagine that!!!

Love,
Henny

P.S.  a note for Diane in Northern Wisconsin... I gave you the wrong email address for Shelby, well, wrong because I left out the 7...her email address is mckenziejam7@aol.com  Also, you can find their farm, Shelly Mac Farm on Facebook. Seems like she said there was something special you had to do to find them on Facebook?? Oops, I'll ask.

Shelby has figured out how to ship the jams and jellies in a way that costs less. She buys a flat-rate box from the post office that will hold six jars and ships for $13.00. There was a lady who wanted to order two jars of jam that cost $5.00 each, but the shipping cost was $5.90 for each jar. Anyhow, thought I would just mention this.

Gosh! What a post! Are you still here?? 😌

  1. Hi Henny! I bet your perm is cute! Oh that Deb! She's SO nice like YOU!
That's funny about the leaf blowers!

  3. It seems funny when you talk about raking leaves when I finished raking mid October. We do not have the huge trees so get less leaves than you have.

    1. Finishing in October would be so nice. Some of these oak leaves fall through February.

  4. I'm glad that you like your perm. That's what counts. I remember when permed, short hair was in style. I think it was in the early to mid 80s. My sister got a perm and looked good so I got one. When I got in my car to drive home, I looked in the rear-view mirror and laughed out loud. That was the last time I got a perm. In my younger years I might have been able to handle one of those electric leaf blowers/vacs, but not now. That bag on one is so tiny you'd spend more time emptying it than in sucking up leaves. You need one of those expensive riding mowers with the vacuum attachment that sucks the leaves up and puts them in a huge bag on the back. Ha! I can just see you doing that. Poppy would probably jump right in and do it himself with one of those. Men do love those toys.

    1. Hey Peg! I've had a few wild perms myself! It is awful, having to deal with a bad perm until it grows out. I wonder just how expensive those riding mowers with the vacuum attachment are. I'm going to Google that and find out. Now I want one! Wouldn't that be fun!!! Wonder if we would be arguing over who was going to get the riding mower/vac? :)

  5. I got a new electric one by kobalt this year. I like it, but if I had a huge yard, I would probably get a heavy duty gas one

    1. I like the electric ones, once the big part of the leaves are gone.

  6. Well, so much for advice about leaf blowers. It did occur to me that you would soon have a mountain of leaves. At a local park the other day, we saw a guy with a leaf blower working with a guy with a tractor with a scoop loader. I'm thinking that's what you need!

    1. Now that does sound more like what we need. I've wanted a tractor for years! Thank you Linda.

    1. Thank you! I love Deb's blog too. She amazes me with the little animals. The weather map shows our county as being right on the line for getting snow...it may be just sleet and cold rain. :( It would be fun to see snow.

  8. The leaves in our yard used to take us months to clean up when we raked them. Hubby finally bought a high power blower. He now blows the leaves to me and I burn them. So much quicker. And then, we have to do leaves again in the spring as we have pin oaks and they finish dropping their leaves in the spring. We may be getting snow this weekend, too. Don't know if I'm ready for it or not.

    1. Hey Cindy! Your yard sounds like ours, and some of these oaks drop leaves all through February! It's mighty early for snow around here.

  11. That's a lovely gift and card, Henny, such a lovely time of the year! I don't envy you your leaves, I just let what few I have lay there. I miss them sort of! It is snowing like crazy up here, we have 4 inches and counting! Stay warm and enjoy the weekend! Terry

  12. We have a leaf blower too but it seems like as much work as raking them. It's the bagging and moving them that is most tiring and time consuming and moviing the blowr around isn't easy on the back. Most of all thought, I hate the noise of the blower whereas the swish swish of the fakers just nice. Our leaves just fell this week and then the rain started so it will be after Christmas when we do that job.

  13. Oh the card is adorable and what a lovely gift.
I have tried leaf blowers and I just seem to blow the leaves all over the place, : ) so it is raking for me too.

Thanks a lot for the info on your sister's email address for jams, etc, Henny. I appreciate that. I haven't had a chance to email her yet, but I will be getting around to it one of these fine days! Sure hope your hubby helps you with those leaves, with all those leaf blowers hanging around your place. What a lovely gift you got and I love those 3 kittens on the ornament. So sweet. Don't worry about all the leaves.....try to enjoy this beautiful time of the year! Merry Christmas to all at your place!

  15. We have a large yard with lots of leaves also. The easiest method we have found is just mowing them with our riding mower. You have to set the deck pretty high if they are really deep but if you don't let them get too deep it works really well. It has saved me hours of labor and the chopped leaves are a good fertilizer for the lawn.

  16. I hope that you get all of your leaves up. The farmer has ours blowed out of the yard. I loved your last post I have not been able to make a comment for some reason. I hope maybe this one will go through. I loved the little outhouse, it was adorable. Love you bunches

  17. I don't think I could keep up to your mountain of leaves but oh, how nice to have all the shade and beautu of the trees. That card is so pretty and suits you with your love of animals. Nancy

  18. What a huge job it is raking those leaves! Guess it's the price of having all those lovely trees.
I do wish you didn't work so hard though.

  19. Hi Henny: You are so welcome. When I found it I thought of Smokey, Dumperoo and Bickett even though they don't look anything alike. lol I'm sure your hair looks great. Nothing like getting pampered a bit. Snow is falling now at the mouse-house. We are heading out to our local tea room for cake and coffee soon. 'Tis the season. :) Annie & Audrey are waving "hi"

  20. Oh that Deb is just too sweet! I have a great little cordless leaf blower that I use to blow the leaves off the deck and blow out the garage and potting shed, but I imagine it wouldn’t make a dent on the leaves in the garden. I hate to rake, so I just run them over with the lawn mower and mulch them into the grass. On the patio and other areas, I usually take care of the leaves during spring cleanup. I don’t look forward to it, but I do like getting outside after a long winter and getting the outside spaces spruced up again. Snowing here now, and the birds are happy at the feeders. The fire is blazing in the wood stove, and the pups are all munching on rawhide sticks. Life is good!

  21. What a sweet gift . . . I love Christmas ornaments that remind me of happy times and sweet friends and family . . . they are the best. I know that you will be thinking of Deb every year when you decorate your tree:) That first photo of your barn and the vines growing up the tee trunk is lovely . . . I just love all things that look country and love seeing photos of your little farm:)
    Have a sweet day.
    God bless you.
    Connie :)

Speaking of addresses, I would enjoy having yours. ;-)
    Did you get snow?
    Merry Christmas Henny,

  23. Well that is pretty funny about the leaf blowers! Maybe Poppy could blow them into small piles and you could be the picker upper with the wheel barrow. That would have to be a bit easier on you! We have one of those oak trees that hang onto their leaves. Ugh, I hate that part about it. Otherwise it is a very nice tree and I appreciate the shade in the summer. It just means that you can never really get all the leaves tidied up because the oak leaves keep blowing off all winter and into spring.
