There's always flowers and bugs

Dear friends,

I haven't written a post fit to read in a while now. Oh, there's plenty of stuff going on, in fact, the days simply fly, but I sit down at the computer and draw a blank.

If mama was still here, her advice to me would be, "oh,  just write anything. What difference does it make"?  She was sweet, that's for sure.

Anyhow, Eli, Weetie, and I just went for a walk, without Poppy. He has to work until 5:00 today.

we walked to the garden...

not much left there but a few flowers and some bugs.  A Katydid. Don't you wonder how the Katydid got it's name?

and a bee

the spider on this zinnia hid behind a petal

this one looks like it was torn from a child's coloring book

the okra is still blooming though most the leaves are gone from the stems

and inside, a big black ant

Just googled, "how did the katydid get it's name" and learned it is because of how it's song sounds...like "katy did, katy didn't".

I've heard those sounds at night all my life and did not know it was the song of the Katydid. You can hear it on youtube katydid sounds.

Well, it's time to light things up in the sewing room. If I hurry, I can sew for an hour anyway.

Thank you for putting up with me.

Love
Henny

  6. What I enjoy the most about your blog is how real you come across to the reader. As I do with my own blog, I don't have much in mind. I go out and photograph, then try to put words to what I see from my camera.... this is what works for me. So, just continue what you are doing, and I will continue to enjoy what you have to say.

  7. Henny, most of our lives are pretty mundane... so our blogs pretty much reflect this. Sharing everyday things that make up my days is what I blog about. I write it down because it is therapeutic for me to do so and figure that if anyone is interested, they'll read... if not, that's OK too. I love flowers, bugs, and nature, so keep sharing.

  9. At least you have a variety of bugs to spot. Here it is slugs, snails and spiders now with the odd crane fly in the evening. There are still a few flowers clinging on for dear life although the roses are still going strong. The strong colours from the Chrysanthemums and Michaelmas Daisies are the saving grace in my garden.

  10. I think your momma was a such a kind-spirited lady, salt of the earth kind, that was practical and creative, and loved her family with a passion.....lucky you.
The flowers are fading fast, I've never witnessed an Okra plant in bloom, it's beautiful !
Interesting about the sound of the Katy Did, they are fascinating insects.
Have a wonderful weekend Henny :)

  11. Don't ever say, don't have anything to blog about.

See? you told us how the Katy-did got its name!

And you description of that flower... "this one looks like it was torn from a child's coloring book" is true. And oh so lovely a description. Poetic even!! I'd have never thought of that. But it is soooooooooo true.

So, don't say you have nothing to blog about. Please...

  12. Nice bugs! We're glad they've slowed down here, the mosquitos, chiggers, fleas, etc. We've had quite a problem with fleas this year and had to get Ben the Bugman to spray, something we don't like to do.

    1. Thank you Cynthia! We have had more mosquitoes this year than ever before. Thank goodness we haven't had a flea problem in several years. Fleas have got to be the worst, and hardest to get rid of. I don't blame you for spraying.

  13. The katydid is my very favorite insect to listen to as the evening comes. I love going to sleep to the sound of them in the trees around the house. I continue to be fascinated by the insects found on flowers -- some appear to have been made specially for that flower (goldenrod soldier beetle comes to mind)and to have relationship with them (ants on peonies).

    1. Hey Leilani. I love your name! You know, it is my favorite too, and I did not know that it was the katydid making that sweet peaceful sound, until now. The first time I saw the peonies covered in ants, it worried me, but found out that they were taking care of the aphids. I'm going to google goldenrod soldier beetle now. Thank you.

  15. Well you know, I don't think I have ever seen a katydid. I guess I should say I may have seen one and thought it was some kind of a strange grasshopper. And I didn't know that they were some of those nighttime sound makers. Guess I thought all those were cicadas. Goodness gracious where have I been all my life. Living in town for the most part I guess.

We've had two really pretty good rains in the last week and then two wonderful grey days with misty rain throughout. Sooooo nice. Everything looks green and happy. A fair amount of the pine needles are carpeting the lawn and leaves are falling as well. It's beginning to feel like fall.

    1. Hey Vic. Glad I posted about the katydid. I learned something about them too. Glad you got some rain, and we finally got a little too. Beginning Tuesday, it is supposed to feel more like fall here. Your yard is probably beautiful!!

  16. I like your posts. I'm always fascinated by insects, and from late summer on, there is no mowing, so they have shelter and food for winter. But it won't be too long until everything is under a blanket of snow, and you can't see it here, anyway. October has been pleasantly warm.

  17. We don't have Katydids around here so obviously I've never seen one but I did listen to the youtube song of the Katydid and it didn't sound much like Katydid to me. Who names these things anyway?
I often have trouble knowing what to blog about so I sure understand. I enjoy reading what you're doing no matter what it is so I guess I'll try to believe others actually enjoy seeing what I'm doing! In any case I have a dear friend and 2 far-away sisters who read but seldom comment on my blog. That's the way they can keep up with what I'm doing.

  18. Most readers seem to enjoy best reading about the simple things. I know I do. i love the zinnia that looks like it was torn from a child's coloring book. It really does! I love the Katydids!

  19. Well, now I know what a Katydid looks like! I've heard of them, but never saw one that I know of. Wondering if you have deer antlers in your area? If so, you might add some to your shop. Our local shops sell them for $25 for a set.

    1. Oh my goodness, is that 25 dollars or 25 cents?? Poppy can get all the deer antlers he wants at the deer processing plant where he works, during deer season. Thank you!! You have the best ideas...always!!

  23. How fun! I didn't know that about the katydid. When my mother was young, she had a puppy she named Katydid. I'll need to go listen on youtube! Your flowers are bright and pretty.
