Ready to garden

Today has certainly made up for yesterday! Eli woke up feeling much better and I worked in the garden for several hours. Got the rows all ready, now I need plants and seeds.

If it looks like I'm proud of this little spot, I am! This used to be nothing but clay. Big solid sticky clumps of clay. I used to get so mad trying to grow anything. I'm telling you, I could have made bowling balls from this stuff! Then I began adding leaves, mulch, old straw from the chicken house and from the goat's lot...anything I could find, even some cardboard. It sure paid off too. Now I enjoy planting a garden.

A patch of Ajuga in back of the greenhouse. I wouldn't mind if Ajuga covered the entire yard.

Oops! I started this post late yesterday and never got to finish.

Been busy today! Got a row of potatoes planted. Six tomato plants in the ground, and a couple of pepper plants. Sowed a patch of kale, and a hill of cucumbers. We have just a small garden...oh I almost forgot...and two rows of Mountaineer half-runner green beans!
Better get supper started. Poppy will be home soon. Thank you for visiting.

Love,
Henny Penny

  1. Your garden soil is looking good now. So much happening in your yard! My spinach and lettuce are up but I will have to cover them as we have some freezing nights through May.

    1. Thank you. I would love to have spinach and lettuce growing. I don't have a lot of luck with greens, of any kind. I can't understand it!

  2. I love your garden spot. We have a small garden but we have not started it yet. Are the green beans you planted good? The last few years the beans that we have planted are so stringy especially after they have been cooked or canned. It is like the strings start growing in them after they are strung.
    Love you!

  3. Mom always said potatoes should be in the ground by St Patrick's Day. It wasn't happening this year here.

You are getting a lot done. It is looking great.

Thanks for stopping by. I can't reply to your email directly because it says "noreplycommentblogger" Regarding music or anything else I believe you are never too old to learn. Andrew has worked hard and your daughter can do it too.

    Have a wonderful day tomorrow.

    1. I am late planting the potatoes. I kind of wish I had put something else in that row! I can't understand what is wrong with my email. Someone else mentioned that. I need to get my daughter's help. Computers confuse me. Thank you for the nice comment.

  4. I'm itching to get started..not much going in this year, but anything is better than nothing! Our soil is the opposite of yours,it's not very deep, and it packs down like concrete once the heat hits.

    1. I am not planting as much this year either. Every year I waste space planting things I can't get to grow. This year it's beans, tomatoes, potatoes, variety of peppers, and a cucumber vine.

  5. Ajuga is a great ground cover...it spreads by runners so you could transplant some runners here and there. I am certain your garden will be beautiful..hope you blasted that snake:)

    1. I didn't get the snake. He must have come back and night before last killed a chicken during the night. I feel terrible! I am cleaning all the straw out of the chicken house searching for him!

  6. Putting humus into clay soil makes all the difference. we have to do the same with our sand and gravel soil.
I look forward to seeing your garden grow and produce.

    1. Sure hope it grows and produces a little something. Your gardens are beautiful. Do you grow vegetables too?

  7. The more organic matter you can add to your soil, the better:) We have been working at that for 27 years. I was supposed to get more planted, but I was out having a Frugal Friday, so I've got to get it done today. I too have a spot I would like to cover with Ajuga. I have a patch that is growing out into the lawn, so I'm going to 'borrow' some from there.
Do you have poisonous snakes there? We don't here, although at Oliver there are rattlesnakes, (probably in the dry rocky areas) but we've never seen one. Snakes rustling anywhere near my feet freak me out!

  8. Oh my! 27 years. No wonder your garden spot is so dark and rich looking. As far as poisonous snakes, we do have Copperheads and their coloring blends in with the leaves. I am so afraid of stepping on one. That black snake in the chicken house has got to go. It killed a hen Thursday night. We must have accidentally shut the snake up with the chickens!
