The row of mail boxes up at the main road can be a pretty raggedy sight, but not ours. Not any more...
a little "late Mother's Day gift" Andee said when the package arrived in the mail this week...
Five adorable bunnies. I just want to reach in and pick one up. Looks like I'm going to have to get myself another real live bunny. My heart still aches for those at Mr. Murphy farm.
Thank you Andee and Todd.
Remember when Grandpa Jones used to ask, "what's for supper"? Well last night it was...
Candied sweet potatoes...
Oh my goodness friends! More than 20 years ago I gave up trying to make candied sweet potatoes like those mama made.
Thought to myself, everything else can be Googled, why not old timey candied sweet potatoes? Found what sounded most like mama's...but left out the spices...
Mama never covered up that delicious sweet potato flovor with spices...
this is simply sweet potato, real butter, and sugar. I left them simmering until the syrup was sticky and the potatoes were a touch crisp or chewy on the edges.
Of course, a pan of cornbread was necessary...
to go with the green beans and hand full of small potatoes, seasoned with a little fat back grease, fresh from the teeny tiny garden. Grandpa Jones would have approved, don't you think...
and in the small bowl, stewed yellow squash, who would have thought! and here...
the more tender green beans I cooked with garlic and butter...
Eli says, "well, can we eat now"! What a surprise again this summer to get yellow squash from the garden. No stinking squash bugs, yet, anyways.
Better get busy. I was happily mowing away yesterday when my little red mower knocked off. Poppy tinkered with it for a while...told me to let it sit over night and if it doesn't run today he will get Truman to look at it.
Truman is a trip! The folks around here call him the junk man...you should see his place! Maybe I'll get a picture and do a "Truman" post.
Okay, the squash picture came out on the bottom??
Be back soon (hopefully)...
Love, Henny
Those are all of my favorite things too. I sliced yellow squash from the farm, wet them good and them shook them in a mixture of cornmeal and flour and fried them crispy. Oh my! I could eat the whole pan. Well, better save room for that yummy cornbread! I love Southern cookin'!
ReplyDeleteoh this looks so good and farmhousy, I love all of those seperate and together it must be delicious. We have flowers on our squash, winter white ( mashed potatoe squash ) and the butternut. Love me some cornbread too with just a hugh slatthering of butter....
ReplyDeleteMMMMmmmmm, that looks wonderful! I have lots of "wild" bunnies here who like to nibble my lettuce and parsley and peas, the little darlings. -Jenn
ReplyDeleteYum! That meal sounds perfect to me. I keep a can of bacon grease on the back of the stove, just like my Grandma did. Nothing better on green beans or to fry eggs in. And Eli's eyes peeking over the table are a hoot. :-)
ReplyDeleteThat mailbox wrap is so darling. I can just imagine a little bunny to snuggle. I have my hands full with Zoey and Lizzie though.
I hope you have a wonderful 4th of July Henny.
Blessings,
Betsy

Eli was wondering where his plate was!
ReplyDeleteEverything looks so wonderful, Henny.
You all be safe and God bless.
Now that's our kind of supper! Nothing compares to eating fresh from the garden. The mailbox decor is perfect for Henny Penny Lane. Bunnies are living under my garden shanty. Sometimes I encounter them quite close when weeding or watering the garden. They don't seem afraid of me at all.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! I just ate dinner but your photos have me longing for room to eat all you cooked! Yum. As soon as I saw the first photo of your new mail box art, I thought to myself, Henny will be longing for the soft fur of a bunny again. And who wouldn't? I had my last pet rabbit 30 years ago, as a human adult, I thought then and do now they are get pets. Of
ReplyDeletecourse Precious would not let it live in peace, lol.
Supper fit for a King --- or a Queen I'm tellin ya!! I grew up eating suppers just like this---it all looks so DELICIOUS! Especially the beans and "taters". This is debbi from debbis front porch-- don't know why it comments me as " anonymous ". ?? LOL we got our first squash as well and I fried it right up with green " maters". Love that pretty mailbox too!
ReplyDeleteYum, would love sitting at your dinner table :) Love your pretty new mailbox too . . . it's you :)
ReplyDeleteOh, my! What a delicious meal. I absolutely love your mailbox. It is so beautiful. Love the bunnies!
ReplyDeleteLove the bunnies that Andee and Todd sent you! They are adorable. Oh my, my friend! Those sweet potatoes remind me of what my mother-in-law used to make. Try as I might, I can't replicate them. I should have come to your house last night for supper! The food all looks amazing! My husband picked our first yellow squash last evening. Happy Fourth of July.
ReplyDeleteThe mailbox is perfect for you! I love it when we can eat from the garden. Certainly can't do that here. Nothing is growing well in the vegetable patch.
ReplyDeleteI've never tried candied sweet potatoes and only had cornbread once (your food is so different to ours!), but your whole meal looks delicious. Love the bunnies on the mailbox :)
ReplyDeleteA row mail boxes like that here is quite a temptation for teenagers riding around with baseball bats in the car and nothing to do... I used to work at the post office and we got a lot of calls...The Hee Haw legacy lives on and on and on. I spoke with one of my brothers recently and during the conversation said "We're just the Culhanes of Cornfield County..." Squash looks lovely. You're blessed.
ReplyDeleteYour mail box is perfect for you!! Candied sweet potatoes - oh my, I bet they were good!!!!
ReplyDeleteSweet potatoes are one of my favorites. I'll have to try this recipe.
ReplyDeleteYour sweet potatoes look super. I adore the mailbox...it is beautiful. Like you I adore bunnies. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteI love the mailbox! Your supper looks magazine worthy. And - I would like a Truman post.

ReplyDeleteYour new mailbox is just perfect. Love that line-up of cute bunnies!!
ReplyDeleteOh that looks yummy---and I don't even like sweet potatoes! Fresh produce from the garden must be a real treat. A reward for all your good garden work!
ReplyDeleteA nice and very appropriate new letterbox for you Henny- looks great! Our letterbox is made of Sandstone. Regards. KEV.
ReplyDeleteMmmm, delicious things from your garden! And I just love the bunny cover for your mailbox. I hope a real live one does come your way soon, to love and write about on your blog.
ReplyDeleteEverything looks so good! I make sweet potatoes , I cook them in the microwave, scoop them out and then mash them with a fork adding some butter and a bit of brown sugar...love them that way!
ReplyDeleteNow that is some good looking country eating. Yum. PS I was wondering if there is any water added to cooking the poatoes..I know you said just butter and sugar..but I have never cooked these..thank you and thanks for sharing. I love your Bunny gift..so adorable.
ReplyDeleteYum yum Henny~ all the things I love, I'd come a running if you called! The squash are beautiful. Sounds like you are having a beautiful summer. Good luck with your mower. Terry
ReplyDeleteVery pretty squash! And what a feast for supper!! I bet your hubby was happy with that. Lots of fresh veggies, and that sweet potato dish looks like dessert :) We're getting hot in NC now, and I'm staying inside. Take care of yourself, HP!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great looking meal! Just the way we like to eat. Always green beans with potatoes, gosh nothing better. Sweetest bunny mailbox, I have ever seen. I am sure it brings a smile to the mail carrier.
