Frocks and Marigolds

About 30 years ago Poppy bought me two nice metal rakes, rakes that came with a lifetime guarantee. Well, I wore them out.  Seriously! Too bad I didn't keep the receipt. :)

So I bought another rake this week. A much cheaper, lighter weight, rake...
Never owned a big plastic rake before! It makes a nice wide sweep but doesn't grab all the leaves and debris like the medal rakes.

Anyhow, I've raked leaves for three days now and barely made a dent in them, but can sure feel it in my back and legs. I'm beat!

I'm still cleaning up the teeny tiny garden too and today pulled up the marigolds...

"Wonder if the chickens would like marigolds", I thought? Then remembered! Do you remember Frank Perdue's TV ads? He bragged about the nice color of his chickens. He fed them marigold petals! He also produced his own chicken feed containing marigold petals...

Well then! I dressed up the raggedy old chicken lot by placing bunches of marigolds all around...

Of course, the rooster bragged that all this was his idea...

The hens hardly had time to eat with him calling them from one bunch of flowers to another.

Wonder where the four new red hens are...
close together as usual and  gathered around the feeder inside the little hen house.

Well, I didn't wear an old frock outside to work these last few days. I do have a few old frocks, but none so beautiful as those Tasha Tudor wore.

This one, Oh my gosh, was hard to make, for me anyhow. I am not a dressmaker! Three layers of fabric in the bodice!

two layers in the skirt. I love the buttons in back, but who could wear this out raking leaves! It looks uncomfortable.

I made this simple dress too. Little red checks. Not too pretty though...

I might could rake leaves wearing this one with an apron, maybe...

and this dress, my favorite, I found a Goodwill store...

I wore this one to the Duke Homestead Festival a few years ago where Shelby and I were vendors.

Oh, wouldn't you love to have a few of Tasha Tudor's dresses, or some like them? I would settle for just the pattern.

These dresses have been hanging in the sewing room for ages! When I started trying them on the dress form for pictures, I realized all three were dusty and dirty. I threw them in the washer.

and hung them out to dry...made for a right pretty picture anyway...

Guess that's about it for now. It's near 8:00. Think I'll go dip us a cup of ice cream. Thank you for visiting.

Love,
Henny

    1. Thank you Judy. Sometimes I wish we had only hens. That big rooster was hatched here so I felt like we needed to keep his. Hope you get a pair of goats. They are fun.

  2. So nice to see you back again! So you got yourself a new rake....hope it lasts you a long time. You always have so many leaves to rake up. I love all your dresses hanging up to dry....they're so cute! Love the hens pecking around the marigolds too. And now I'm wondering what kind of ice cream you're going to have? Thanks for a great blog Henny!

    1. Thank you Diane. Last night we had Turkey Hill Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream. If I could stop eating ice cream at night, I'm sure I would weigh at least five pounds less than I do. Makes me so mad at myself...every morning! :)

  3. I love the dresses and they look so nice on the line. It looks like it might be Tasha Tudor's place and clothesline! I get such a kick out of seeing the different relationships among chickens. Your rooster is just taking the credit for everything! All of your chickens and the rooster are sure good looking birds!

    1. Thank you Bonnie. Aren't roosters funny. Is funny the right word? They are 'male' and in charge, that's for sure.

  6. Love those dresses hanging in your woods. Oh, I think we need a photo of you wearing one of those dresses, with one of your pretty aprons, raking the leaves with your new rake would be lovely. Love your sweet chickens.

  7. Oh, those dresses are pretty but not very practical for working outside. I don't know how Tasha Tudor managed.

  8. There is something about wearing a dress and apron that just makes me feel so feminine. I think that I should have been born in an era where ladies wore more dresses. I guess I could wear them, but I would be the only one around here. So, I guess I'll stick with blue jeans.

  9. Those dresses are so pretty. I always wear dresses as I find them so comfortable. I don't even remember the last time I had pants on! My favorite is the second one with the apron over it. Perfect. I would wear that all of the time. I have a pattern that has a sundress version and then you just add a sleeve for cooler weather. All of my dresses are made with the same pattern and I love it. I have 6 summer dresses and 7 cool weather ones but two of those are wearing out so I really should make a couple more. It sure simplifies getting dressed in the morning.
I love the chickens eating marigolds. I had never heard that they were good for them. They have a new salad buffett!
We have a rake just like yours. We had two metal ones we bought 42 years ago when we were first married but they finally wore out a couple of years ago. I know this plastic one won't last 40 more years, even if we do. Ha!
Have a lovely weekend my friend.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

    1. Thank you Betsy. I do remember that you wear dresses all the time. I admire that so much. I used to wear nothing but skirts...I love the long tiered skirts. Seem like I remember you posted a picture of your dress pattern once, and I really liked it. I am determined to get back to wearing skirts and dresses. I love them. Sounds like your rakes were just like mine, really good! I think I may look for another metal rake. You have a lovely weekend too.

Oh gosh, listening to the news it sounds like we need to be on full lockdown over here. Kind of scary. I was just reading about your clipping the Virginia Creeper and the big spider in the window. :)

  13. Lovely pictures. Beautiful frocks, I even like the name Frock@ The red check one I think is my favorite, and the apron sets it off lovely. I wouldn't turn any of them down, especially if I could fit in them, which I cannot. Oh bother. You are a very good seamstress and all them are lovely, and them on the clothesline with woods back drop...beautiful.

  14. My marigolds bit the dust Nov first when it snowed! I threw them into the brush for the winter birds to peck the
seeds. We get Juncos from Canada and Tree Sparrows. They love tiny seeds. I do enjoy seeing your lovely frocks
hanging in the sun on the line. Poor young red hens, afraid of the rooster? Missing out on the petals?

  15. Thank you Lynn. When we brought the new hens home, we put the rooster and one ill-natured hen in a separate pen for two weeks or until they got used to each other. The pens were together so they could see each other. We let the rooster out this week and the red hens all gathered around him. He didn't bother either of them. It was funny.

  16. Hi Henny... I only grew one small patch of marigolds this summer. And of course they are gone now. We have had one big snow storm already but its all gone and the temps are way up today. Yah! Our wildflowers are all in seed now and we have loads of birds enjoying them. Juncos, gold finch, sparrows...
I can see you in all your pretty dresses but agree that they might not work well while raking. lol
Sending hugs to all and give Smokey an ear scritch for me. xo

  17. Hey Deb. Glad you are having a warmer day today. We had a little cold weather but now the temperatures are back in the high 70's, which I love! Funny you said give Smokey an ear scratch...Oh Deb, he is so fat! :) and after he eats his breakfast he throws himself on my feet wanting a good scratch. I scratched both ears and under his chin and his fat tummy this morning. The look on his face makes me laugh, especially when I rub his face with the palm of my rough hands (from yard work). I believe he thinks he is back with his mommy. He sure is my boy! Wilson and Smokey remind me of each other. "Wilson". You couldn't have picked a better name. :)

  19. Henny girl, I do not know about that plunging neckline on a pioneer dress. :):) Sure is pretty though. I love that the chickens liked the flowers...how very funny, they all seemed interested. You made me laugh about wearing out your rakes. You are a hard working girl. Blessings to you. Stay safe. xoxo, Susie

  20. It never occurred to me to feed marigolds to my chickens! Good idea!

I love your dresses too. We all may just have to do our best Tasha Tudor copycatting. :)

  21. Your dresses are so pretty. It is a long time since I last wore a dress, yet they are so feminine.
Love the way the rooster takes care of his 'girls' - we all need a man around to take care of us! :)

  28. Oh, I haven’t thought about Tasha Tudor for years! I just loved her book about her life on her farm and wanted to grow old just like her. I love your dresses. I wonder if your four new chickens will ever be accepted by the flock or will always stay their own flock. Well, at least they have each other.

  30. I'm a dress wearer, even in the garden, they are so much more comfortable than pants. I wore your sweet little apron last week, and felt like my grandma who wore one everyday. Your chickens are loved as with all of the animals on your farm. My daughter rescued two little goats today, her menagerie is growing

  31. I love those dresses, but I never would wear them. I am a totally jeans girl...I do not envy you ironing them. LOL

If I had your chickens I would drive them crazy taking photos.

  32. Thank you for the fun hen story, and the tip about the marigolds. I don't have any marigolds this year, but ... next year!
The dresses are so pretty. I like the one with the back buttons, but it would not look good on me :) But very pretty frocks!
I have not been raking leaves (a little pine straw), but I have been gathering pecans. It's a BIG pecan year this year. I'm inviting friends over to pick, because we have way too many!

  33. I like all your frocks! Especially the beige one I love the different layers but wouldn't like the neckline so I would need a shawl:)
