Pies Pies and more pies!

My Goodness! Here it is 8:00 Wednesday night. If I hurry, I might get a little post done in time to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving.

Been almost two weeks since my last post and I don't know where the days have gone. Isn't it always something?

Anyhow, this post is perfect for Thanksgiving. Remember my sister Shelby? Bet you remember her kitchen. This was taken a few years ago...

Well she is still into baking except this time it's pies, and a few cakes! She and my brother-in-law Jimmy no longer sell at the farmer's market every Saturday, but they do sell at a special farmer's market held every Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Here, you may remember Jimmy too...

this picture is from a few years ago too. Anyhow, Shelby called me last night. They were home from the market, dead tired and cold. Shelby said she was chilled through and through and was on the couch snuggled up in a quilt while Jimmy had gone out to throw more wood in the furnace, out near the smokehouse. Sounds rather cozy doesn't it...

As Poppy often says, "get to the point", get to the point! So, Shelby made from scratch...48 pies and 2 cakes...to take to the market yesterday! I mean 48 pies!

A one man pie factory, right there in her kitchen!

These are some of her pie crust rounds, made from scratch, of course, chilled and ready to be rolled out...

and here are a few of the finished pies...

Shelby told me she used 14 pounds of butter, 9 dozen eggs, and 16 cups of pecans.

This is just amazing to me. I find it a job to make even one pie!

I didn't ask if she would be baking a pie for herself and Jimmy for Thanksgiving day.

Thanksgiving will be a little different this year. Lots of worries. But anyhow, hope all of you have a happy Thanksgiving. Stay safe and well.

Have had a few computer problems, but up and running again and hope to be back real soon.

Love,
Henny

  1. Oh my word! I think it's a big deal when I make three extra pastries to put in the freezer! I'm seeing blueberry, pumpkin, pecan, but what kind of pie is in the last picture? A kind of custard? I bet she sold every single one. I'm chuckling a bit about the two cakes. After all those pies, she still wanted to bake a couple of cakes?? -Jenn

  2. I cannot imagine making 48 pies!! Shelby must not want to make another pie for a long time!
I know celebrations this year will be very different but I hope in spite of it all that you and Poppy will have a Happy Thanksgiving.

  3. Wow! How in the world does Shelby make that many herself? She is a superwoman for sure! I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

  4. Oh my goodness! No wonder she was on the couch all snuggled up. She has to be exhausted. Those pies look amazing and super delicious. I'm not making any pies this year. I would eat them and I don't need the calories. We're not having turkey either. I'm making chicken enchilada's because that's what Dennis requested. I couldn't find a little, itty, bitty turkey for the two of us and we don't have much freezer space here so enchilada's it is!
I hope you and Poppy have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  5. What an amazing sister you have, that is some achievement to make that many pies. I hope she didn't catch a chill getting so cold at the market.
Wishing you all a very happy Thanksgiving Day :) xx

  9. Hello, Henny Penny! Computer troubles here also, as I spilled milk onto my laptop. Now I have a new one (hooray!) on a good Black Friday deal (hooray!) I did read all your posts, but couldn't comment b/c of the soggy keyboard.
Shelby's pies are AMAZING!!! She must be exhausted. After all that, I bet she didn't want to even look at a pie, much less make and eat one for Thanksgiving, bless her heart. That's too much work, but I do hope that every last one sold, and she made a pile of $$.
Happy Thanksgiving to you, here in NC. We are home this year with our college daughter (who was so desperate to leave school. She was lonely.) Next year, we shall all celebrate like there's no tomorrow!! Take care, dear friend. Enjoy the day!

pies. Hope Shelby sold out after all that work. Happy Thanksgiving, different as

  11. I've been reading your blog for a while and always look forward to your posts! You are a gifted seamstress from what I can tell (I can barely sew a button on something). I share your love of animals. I hope you and Poppy have a lovely Thanksgiving Day. Thank you for making my days brighter with your news!

  13. Oh my goodness ~ that is amazing. I'm not making a pie this year. Not even sure I'll have dessert, it is just me after all. Although I did find a recipe for pumpkin cake with cream cheese frosting. ;-) Have a very nice Thanksgiving with your hubby ~ Love and hugs ~ FlowerLady

  18. That's an incredible amount of pies to bake!!! Can't even imagine making that many. I thought I did good with my one pumpkin pie!
Happy Thanksgiving to you and all your family.

  19. Wow, she must have a regular assembly line going there. But usually there are numerous workers manning that line to keep everything moving along but Shelby is doing it all herself. That's amazing! She must be good at making multiple batches of the fillings that wicked speed things up a great deal I think. Doubling or halfing recipes never turns out too well for me but she must have it down to a science.

  20. Wow ....thanks for sharing all the pics of Shelby's baking expertise. I have sampled some of her delicious breads so I know how good she is at baking delicious things! But 48 pies??? I can't even imagine that. They sure look delicious though. Hope you're having a super good Thanksgiving at your house! Come back soon!

  26. That is a lot of work, and they are beautiful pies, that I'm sure were all enjoyed! I am by no means a pie-maker - Which is why this year I bought 2 apple pies from a friend of mine who's daughter is, and she wanted to make some extra money. They were worth every penny.... or dollar! :-)

  27. I think that you have been misnamed: Henny? For a hen, you are not laying about. It should be Honey: you are one busy bee. From this post, I can see that it is genetic!

  28. I cannot imagine making that many pies in one day, even if you have the pie crusts made. The older I get the more I am slowing down! It is a chore to do one pie!

  29. All those pies certainly look delicious! I think I made one pie in my life. It's just not my thing to make them, only to eat them!
