So I bought another rake this week. A much cheaper, lighter weight, rake...
Never owned a big plastic rake before! It makes a nice wide sweep but doesn't grab all the leaves and debris like the medal rakes.
"Wonder if the chickens would like marigolds", I thought? Then remembered! Do you remember Frank Perdue's TV ads? He bragged about the nice color of his chickens. He fed them marigold petals! He also produced his own chicken feed containing marigold petals...
Well then! I dressed up the raggedy old chicken lot by placing bunches of marigolds all around...
Of course, the rooster bragged that all this was his idea...
The hens hardly had time to eat with him calling them from one bunch of flowers to another.
Wonder where the four new red hens are...

I made this simple dress too. Little red checks. Not too pretty though...
I might could rake leaves wearing this one with an apron, maybe...
and this dress, my favorite, I found a Goodwill store...
I wore this one to the Duke Homestead Festival a few years ago where Shelby and I were vendors.
These dresses have been hanging in the sewing room for ages! When I started trying them on the dress form for pictures, I realized all three were dusty and dirty. I threw them in the washer.
Guess that's about it for now. It's near 8:00. Think I'll go dip us a cup of ice cream. Thank you for visiting.
Anyhow, I've raked leaves for three days now and barely made a dent in them, but can sure feel it in my back and legs. I'm beat!

Well, I didn't wear an old frock outside to work these last few days. I do have a few old frocks, but none so beautiful as those Tasha Tudor wore.
This one, Oh my gosh, was hard to make, for me anyhow. I am not a dressmaker! Three layers of fabric in the bodice!

ReplyDeleteThank you Diane. Last night we had Turkey Hill Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream. If I could stop eating ice cream at night, I'm sure I would weigh at least five pounds less than I do. Makes me so mad at myself...every morning! :)

DeleteThere is something about wearing a dress and apron that just makes me feel so feminine. I think that I should have been born in an era where ladies wore more dresses. I guess I could wear them, but I would be the only one around here. So, I guess I'll stick with blue jeans.

DeleteThose dresses are so pretty. I always wear dresses as I find them so comfortable. I don't even remember the last time I had pants on! My favorite is the second one with the apron over it. Perfect. I would wear that all of the time. I have a pattern that has a sundress version and then you just add a sleeve for cooler weather. All of my dresses are made with the same pattern and I love it. I have 6 summer dresses and 7 cool weather ones but two of those are wearing out so I really should make a couple more. It sure simplifies getting dressed in the morning.

We have a rake just like yours. We had two metal ones we bought 42 years ago when we were first married but they finally wore out a couple of years ago. I know this plastic one won't last 40 more years, even if we do. Ha!

ReplyDeleteLovely pictures. Beautiful frocks, I even like the name Frock@ The red check one I think is my favorite, and the apron sets it off lovely. I wouldn't turn any of them down, especially if I could fit in them, which I cannot. Oh bother. You are a very good seamstress and all them are lovely, and them on the clothesline with woods back drop...beautiful.

Thank you Lynn. When we brought the new hens home, we put the rooster and one ill-natured hen in a separate pen for two weeks or until they got used to each other. The pens were together so they could see each other. We let the rooster out this week and the red hens all gathered around him. He didn't bother either of them. It was funny.
ReplyDeleteHi Henny... I only grew one small patch of marigolds this summer. And of course they are gone now. We have had one big snow storm already but its all gone and the temps are way up today. Yah! Our wildflowers are all in seed now and we have loads of birds enjoying them. Juncos, gold finch, sparrows...

Hey Deb. Glad you are having a warmer day today. We had a little cold weather but now the temperatures are back in the high 70's, which I love! Funny you said give Smokey an ear scratch...Oh Deb, he is so fat! :) and after he eats his breakfast he throws himself on my feet wanting a good scratch. I scratched both ears and under his chin and his fat tummy this morning. The look on his face makes me laugh, especially when I rub his face with the palm of my rough hands (from yard work). I believe he thinks he is back with his mommy. He sure is my boy! Wilson and Smokey remind me of each other. "Wilson". You couldn't have picked a better name. :)

Oh, I haven’t thought about Tasha Tudor for years! I just loved her book about her life on her farm and wanted to grow old just like her. I love your dresses. I wonder if your four new chickens will ever be accepted by the flock or will always stay their own flock. Well, at least they have each other.

ReplyDeleteI'm a dress wearer, even in the garden, they are so much more comfortable than pants. I wore your sweet little apron last week, and felt like my grandma who wore one everyday. Your chickens are loved as with all of the animals on your farm. My daughter rescued two little goats today, her menagerie is growing

I have not been raking leaves (a little pine straw), but I have been gathering pecans. It's a BIG pecan year this year. I'm inviting friends over to pick, because we have way too many!
