Termite feast!

Good gosh, is it ever hot and humid today! Not complaining! The sun is shining!! I've just come in to cool off, eat a popsicle, and load the termite pictures. :) Sound like an exciting life, doesn't it?

Guineas drying off yesterday after yet another shower of rain. Anyhow...

I had cut back a big overgrown button bush, which, by the way, almost beat me to death, and was dragging the limbs down the path to the woods when I spotted a cloud of what looked to be billions of small winged insects taking flight!

There were supposed to be flying insects in this picture.

it was so silvery and pretty, all the tiny little fluttering wings in the air. So, I ran to the house for my camera, then ran back to the woods, but the silvery cloud was gone... then I saw this...

Termites! Hatching out of an old pine log and flying away. Where the heck are the guineas, and where are all those frogs and lizards when you need them. "Here guinea, guinea, guinea", I called...

and they came running! Surprised me too!

I left them to enjoy their feast!

Well, I didn't get any scaffolding built for the chickens but I did find a big fallen tree limb...

and dragged it into the lot. Most of the hens flew up on the limb, but, of course, by the time I got the camera out all had jumped down...

except for one.

The weather forecast for next week sounds absolutely wonderful. Lower humidity, lower temperatures, and sunshine!!! Things should dry out, even the poor chicken's feet.

That's about it for now. I'm going back into the heat, this time, up to the garden to finish the little wattle fence. Such as it is! :)

Thank you friends.

Love,
Henny

  1. Ooh goodness Henny, termites love old rotten wood, and are a constant worry here in the South...
I came home from work one day, and had a kitchen full of them, despite having the home under a termite contract they had found one spot beneath the foundation where the treatment had been diluted because of an earlier flood, and up they tunneled.
Ever since I am vigilant about watching for them.
Those guineas knew you had a treat and came running...lol
You are a good chicken-mama, always making their lives a better place, Bless you.
    Hugs,
    ~Jo

    1. Now that would be a shock. Bet you didn't know what to do first. After seeing these today, I can just imagine how it would feel to see a room full. Thank you Jo.

  2. Hennie,I love the guineas. They are pretty smart, they know when you holler for them, they need to come a running. Too much water, humidity, everything here. I am hoping to salvage the tomatoes, but they are so water logged. Your place looks lovely now. Please show the wattle fence and tell us how you made it, give me some hope that I might develop skills like yours. XO! Terry

  3. I love that chickens are made happy with so little, they manage to find every bit of fun in things! Well done those guineas - do they have a flock leader?

I hope you get the wattle fence turns out exactly the way you hoped.

  4. Although I'm told we have termites in B.C. I don't think I've ever seen ( nor do I want to). We do have carpenter ants which don't actually eat wood but they make burrows throughout.
So glad your guineas had a feast ( and I'm amazed that they come when you call them).

    1. It was a sight to see! I just wonder where all those termites ended up. The ones that didn't get eaten by the guineas.

  5. Henny I wish you could send us some of your rain! We're high and dry; the hay season may be in trouble.

It is not nice to live and a log cabin with termites around. I am so glad you stoped by my blog to say hello. I tried calling you the other day I will try again. Love you bunches

  11. There's always something going on at your teeny tiny farm!

  12. All the chickens need is something that doesn't take you a lot of time. Like a cat with a shopping bag. :)
    Thank goodness for guineas!
We are supposed to get to 100 this weekend. Enjoy your cooler weather! Have a blessed weekend!

  13. The guineas are so picturesque-- and thank goodness useful, too! This is a timely post as we've had an ant invasion in our kitchen this week, but nothing like termites! These are harmless, and I think clean, little ants. And yet, it's alarming to find the corner of your kitchen floor covered in them. We don't have guineas but we do have spiders who are feasting on the ones I didn't kill. Anyway, it's a "Look On The Bright Side" kind of reminder.
This is great post, will have to share with my mom who loves your chickens! Enjoy all that gorgeous weather next week!!

  16. Guineas eat termites? Good for them! Knowing your house is wooden, I was afraid for you when you first said termites. Glad you were able to quickly get rid of them.

  20. Oh, may it dry out!!! (She says, as it's thundering outside.) I also am looking forward to a week of sun and drying out. I'm glad your termites were so quickly taken care of. It's darling that those birds just came arunning!! :)

    God bless.

  22. So glad it has warmed up and dried out for you! We finally got a bit of needed rain, well we needed more but what we got was better than nothing. Glad the guineas were able to help you out, I've done that with the chickens when I find a feast of a lot of maggots or grubs or something.

  23. You live a very busy life. It is nice that your guineas enjoyed their feast and that they helped you get rid of the termites. Good birds:)

  25. What a feast for the guineas. You have them well-trained! I wouldn't have known those were termites. They won't eat you house will they?

  26. Yikes! That's a lot of termites! I feel like a picky puss when it comes to "just right" gardening weather. I don't like too hot and of course if it's cold I won't go out there. What a baby! All your chores and jobs sound great, Henny!

  27. 'Tis a good thing you have all those critters to attend to those termites. How lovely it is hot up there, the sun is out and you can enjoy a little gardening. Enjoy!
