Let me tell you about a man with a great big tender heart...
You know we've been cleaning out? Well, just this morning we managed to put together another load to carry to the dumpsters, so off Poppy went.
Wasn't long before the phone rang. It was Poppy. "I'm coming down the path", he said, "walk outside, I'm bringing you something". Of course, all kinds of stuff went through my mind. What in the world could it be. The last time Poppy brought home something from the dumpsters...it was kitty cat.
No kitty cat this time...
Poppy said when he turned off the main road onto our dirt path and stopped at the mail box, a car went passed causing something in the road to move and flutter a bit. Poppy thought maybe it was a butterfly, hit by a car.
He walked into the road to check and found this tiny pitiful baby bird, with ants crawling on it's little legs.
How in the world did a baby bird this young get in out of its nest and in the middle of a highway?
What could we feed it?? I got an empty yogurt container and put in a little cornmeal, a few wild blueberries, a little bread, the insides of a cherry tomato...and mixed it all with a bit of water...then Poppy added some earth worms from the compost bin...:(
with the tweezers we managed to get a couple of bites in his tiny mouth. He swallowed like he was starving.
Trying to think like a mama bird, I've been going on the back porch every ten or fifteen minutes, or about as long as it would take a bird to locate and bring home a squashed bug, and feeding the little fellow.
The change has been amazing. Already the little bird perks up and opens his mouth when we touch container he is in.
So, that's our excitement for today. Oh, the wild Yarrow was beginning to look a bit ragged so I mowed it down, but not before breaking off a vase full...

Poppy really does have a big tender heart...especially toward little animals.
Love,
Henny
Oh My!! What a kind thing to do. Do you have any idea exactly what kind of bird the little fellow/girl is?
ReplyDeleteIf someone was to ask me if I like a particular person my first thought is ..."is he/she kind to animals?" That makes the difference to me. I know I would love Poppy. He has proven many times since you have started blogging to have a tender heart for animals. And I think he's rather funny, too. I still laugh when I think that he found something with a picture of a cat on it and said you should send it to me. lol He's witty. I do hope the little bird survives. I know it will give you such a lift to see that it will make it. :)
ReplyDeleteI said so long to the three baby birds in our bird house yesterday. I felt sad to see them gone but I am glad today because it is so hot here that they would have been uncomfortable inside the house. It is +40C today. I have one more family of House Wrens in a birdhouse that are not quite ready to leave. And my bunny & Simon are around every day.Still lots of life here. Enjoy your wknd. It's our Canada Day tomorrow...lots of celebrating.
You have a keeper . . . a man with a gentle heart is not so easy to find anymore :)
ReplyDeleteYou two are amazing. And what a sweet, sweet man.
ReplyDeletegood luck with the little critter! :fingers crossed for you!
ReplyDeleteSo sweet if him to bring him home... he could have left him.. thank goodness for that big heart. So good to be able to stop by and visit with you, with love Janice
ReplyDeleteLove how you always find something to share your home and love with. Have you named the little bird?
ReplyDeleteThat is a very kind thing to do, such a sweet story
ReplyDeleteAww, I 'spect the wee one fell from a nest high in a canopy ?
ReplyDeleteHow kind of your husband to help the little bird, I've had good luck with them in the past.
Your wild Yarrow is beautiful, it looks a lot like CowParsley or Queen Anne's Lace, other than the foliage is different.
Love your tablecloth, so pretty.
Hugs,
~Jo
You are both very tenderhearted. Wishing your new little baby all the best.
ReplyDeleteMany poor little guys perish. You mixed up the right stuff for him.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing that sweet story! Yes, your hubby does have a big heart....just like you do Henny. I will pray that your little winged buddy does all right and can eventually be released. I know how difficult it is to help a little helpless creature. Hope your little bird does well.
ReplyDeleteSo sweet!! I'm a little surprised you were able to get it to eat.
ReplyDeleteHey Farmer suggested finding some mealworms in the store to feed the baby bird. That is so sweet I hope it does well.
ReplyDeleteLove you bunches
I hope your baby bird does well. We have a baby Cowbird in our yard, it is eating ants and bugs, it can fly but not real good...he has been here three maybe four days...mainly just walking around in the yard:)
ReplyDeleteIf anyone can help that little one you can Henny!
ReplyDeleteAh! That's lovely..one of the bestest stories
ReplyDeleteever....l've picked up a few birds in my time,
(feathered variety)..some have survived, some
not..but one has to do something or at least
try..Bless! :).
HeHe! Let's hope it does'nt grow up to be an
Ostrich..! Looking forward to the updates..!
That is so beautiful. We have a lot of robins nesting around our area and one flew out of the nest close to our house. I did not know what to do. Lucky for the bird and me I didn't have to. The Mama or Daddy bird started taking care of it on the ground for a whole day. It would not let anyone or anything close to it. The next day the baby bird was gone, but later that day I saw it and it's parent on top of a small shed. It was able to fly with its parent. I hope yours will be able to fly soon too.
ReplyDeleteThat is lovely, he is a special person. I look forward to updates.
ReplyDeleteAwww :-) Some baby birds can eat canned dog food.
ReplyDeleteAnd he knows YOU do! Aw! What a precious little bird. You are so kind to care for him (or her). Your house is so cozy! I love the wood.
ReplyDeleteAwww-I hope he survives. Poor baby. You are doing a good thing, my friend. xo Diana
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet story about a kind and gentle man, with a sweet loving wife and a little abandoned tweet-tweet. I love that he now opens his mouth when you come to the container with food. Do keep us posted.

If anyone can save that tiny little bird it is you!! You have a such a wonderful way with animals.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of bird is it? You will have to write a post on how to save them for us so we know what works and what does not. We had a little one hit our window, he was not dead just dazed, he just needed some time in the shade and some water.
Good Luck .. you are truly great with animals.
Hope the little bird survives! We raised a baby blue jay once. However, there are animal and bird rescue people who do this all the time. These days all one has to do is google for someone close by. Good luck! And kudos to Poppy for bringing him home. My son-in-law once found 7 little puppies left out in the woods. He brought them home and found homes for all of them. They kept one and still have her. She has been a close companion to my grand daughter ever since.
ReplyDeleteHi Henny nice to meet you, so nice that you are trying to take care of the baby bird. I find them a lot I live near the florida Everglades so we find many baby animals. Our town has a wildlife hospital and they take injured or strayed animals and nurse them to health , If I think I cant I use them. The mixture seems perfect you may have a little friend for life.Keep us updated wont you.... what a nice man your husband for rescuing him. Lisa@ Sweet Tea N' Salty Air
ReplyDeleteHi henny glad you guys are nursing the little bird and hoping he will make it. We found one the other day in our yard but ours wasn't so lucky to have lived. Don't know why it strayed from its nest. I will keep a good thought for your little fella and both you guys are sweet. hugs, lj
ReplyDeleteWe rescued some baby bluebirds once whose parents were killed by sparrows. We fed them for a few days (mealworms) and then turned them over to a bird sanctuary. They shared their feeding secrets with us. They use canned catfood thinned down a little. They put it in a plastic syringe and squirt it in their mouths. It keeps them satisfied longer than the mealworms. They wore us out stuffing mealworms in every half hour!! Those parent birds are amazing!
ReplyDeleteWhat a compassionate hubby you have! Sweet little bird - I hope he makes it. It's a challenge to feed and nurture a wild animal. I've never done that. You're both good people!!
