About that grasshopper trap. Honestly, I think my Mother made that up herself. I searched on line for "grasshopper trap woven with Plantain" and could find nothing. Mama never sat idle. Anytime we were in the yard she was making Daisy chains or chains from the clover flowers. She could doodle better than anyone. I'll have to show you sometime the neat doodle work she taught me. "Doodle work"! Would that be how you say it? Ahhh, remember "Doodle bug, doodle bug your house is on fire"? Anyhow, Mama had the patience of Job.
I remember once when my sister, brother, and I were small. We were all in the car going someplace and mama gave us a stick of gum. She showed us how you could very very carefully separate the foil on the wrapper from the paper, then carefully smooth it out and gently wave it in the air to make a little crinkly sound. Now this is trivial but it entertained and fascinated me, of course, it doesn't take much. :)
Plundering around in my gardening basket a few days ago I found a twenty cent pack of Radish seeds. I figured it was too hot and too late in the season to sow them, but look. Have you ever seen a bunch as cute? :)
There was also a twenty cent pack of Cosmos in my basket so I dug a spot in the garden for them. I like those twenty cent packs of seeds that Walmart sells. Just right for my teeny tiny gardening spots.
Anytime Eli and Weetie are are awake the kitty feeder stays on the freezer in the pantry. Glad Bickett didn't decide to back up.
I'm off to refill the hummingbird feeders and wash the kitchen window. Hope your Monday started off as fine and dandy as mine did. Gosh, knock on wood! Hope this week stays fine and dandy.
Love,
Henny

you have such a busy household it's a wonder you get it all done. Be sure to get some good pictures of planting the seeds.
ReplyDeleteThe radish grew fast, you must have good soil !
ReplyDeleteYour moma sounds like she was a lovely lady, who doesn't like being taught how to doodle, especially from our moms.
Thunderstorms here again all week, I hope your day stays nice and dry, and let's you get your chores finished.

Nice radishes! Sounds like those popped up super fast and grew super fast. That is enough to make me put a few seeds in here an see if I get that lucky. It maybe to warm here, but mmm yours did good! I like those 20 cent packs of seeds too. You never know what they are going to have in those. I have found quite a few heirloom seeds varieties in them! Like you say sometimes you just want a few of something and those are perfect.
ReplyDeleteI will have to look for those 20c seed packets. I found some 4/$1 at the Dollar Store but they didn't have much variety. I just came in from washing, filling, and rehanging my hummingbird feeders. We only seem to have two drinkers so far and they aren't drinking much but I don't want them to get tipsy from fermented sugar wate!
ReplyDeletePerhaps the grasshopper trap was meant to keep kids entertained...we made daisy chains too and braided grass...and looked for four leafclovers:)
ReplyDeleteI had a hunch the grasshopper trap was of your mother's own inventing. It shows creativity, imagination and skill. A lovely memory.
ReplyDeleteA wonderful memory of your Mother, one to treasure. Those cats look comfortable.
ReplyDeleteI remember the gum wrapprer thing. I'd completely forgotten about it.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering if that plantain grasshopper trap was something your mother made up!:) Here the rhyme goes, Ladybug, Ladybug, fly away home... And when I was in England it was Ladybird rather than Ladybug.
ReplyDeleteAnd just when I was going to try making one of my own......lol
ReplyDeleteI wonder if your mum ever caught a grasshopper ?
~Jo
A great memory of your mom. Mine always had neat little games to keep us kids quiet on our long trips back to our home state of Arkansas from whatever air force base we happened to be living at. I remember numerous car trips in an old station wagon..
ReplyDeleteI wish I could find twenty cent packets of seeds at our Walmart. Your radishes look good. Tomorrow I must give mine a shot of fertilizer so they grow faster!!
ReplyDeleteLadybug, ladybug, fly away home, your house is on fire and your children all alone!
ReplyDeleteHow about the one 'I wish I were a doodle bug in some shady place'--did you ever hear it? I won't finish it cause it isn't very nice...I don't know where I heard it but as a kid I thought it funny.
We used to make grasshopper traps, but not sure I could do it now. I will have to wait till summer to see. If I can remember it.
my great grandmother and my grandfather made the grasshopper traps also. My mother said she has caught quite a few grasshoppers with them when she was young
