Maybe I should have been a weatherman :)

I know! It's that snowball bush again this year! Well, it is spring!

We have had the craziest weather. These pictures were taken early last week on a cool cloudy day...

Azaleas and snowball bush just beginning to open pretty.

Oh, and the white azaleas! So many times the unexpected frost comes and turns them brown.

Love this two tone melon color azalea...

and the wild azalea is beautiful...

The weather! Everything about Easter Sunday here on Henny Penny Lane was perfect. Andee and Todd came. We had blue skies and sunshine, and a good dinner.

Monday came along...

and the weather completely turned around...bringing a cold front, led by rain, rain, rain, high winds and dropping temperatures! All day long! We actually built a fire in the fireplace and kept it going.

Not a creature stirred, well, looks like a hen and the rooster did venture out in the cold rain.

So, Tuesday the sun came back but it was too wet to do much outside...then came the weather forecast for Tuesday night/ Wednesday morning! Frost/freeze warning...especially counties near the North Carolina/Virginia border, meaning us!

I pulled out ever old sheet and tablecloth I could find and covered most of the Hostas and ferns, and put buckets and flower pots over the plants in the vegetable garden. The temperature dropped to exactly 32 degrees! Freezing!

So yesterday, as the day warmed I carried the wheelbarrow and rake and worked in the back yard a little...

The sky was blue, blue, blue...

Remember, I never got to rake leaves last fall. It was October 10th when Ellie and I crashed head on and broke my wrist...the beginning of my aches and pains. :)

So the grounds under and around the azaleas are covered in ugly brown leaves. I raked and hauled away three tarp loads. :(

Oh my gosh, you've probably all left. I'll hush now and publish this mess. Thank you friends!

Love, Henny

  1. Crazy Spring weather this year all over. We had bright clear frigid temp weather for Easter Sunday. So glad you
had family in for it and nicer weather. Love all the colorful flowers you have in the bushes. Up here the daffodils are
mostly finished and the forsythias. Bare trees still, no leaves on anything. Rain and more rain. So I take delight in
seeing your plants in and out of the rain and wind. Don't overdo the raking and make things worse. You'll be wanting to put in a big garden soon. Lynn and Precious

  2. We've had the most unpredictable Spring weather this year. One minute I'm breaking out the flip-flops and the next I'm back in my furry winter boots. I made the mistake of buying my porch ferns early, they have been removed from their hanging spots over six times already, and toted in the garage. I said It was the last time I would do it, if it gets down to the freezing mark again, it's every man for himself !
Love seeing your beautiful blooms, and home .
    Hugs,
    ~Jo

  4. Hi Henny, your azaleas are gorgeous! We have had a tremendously cold and wet Spring. Daffodils and crocus are just blooming now. I imagine we are about a month behind you.
    Have a wonderful weekend!❤️

We have a couple days without rain; but lots of wind and temps to the upper 80s! I'm not ready for summer. :)

  7. Your shrubs are so lovely, especially the azaleas. How I wish we'd have put in some of those when we could. Now there's no room to stick any new shrub anywhere on our city lot. Sorry about all your rain and late frosts. Weather this Spring is just weird. Oh well, at least you had good weather on Easter.
Dop't overdo the yard work my dear.

  8. Frost is very stressful particularly when you have new plants out in the garden. You keep hoping it won't freeze.

  10. Those azaleas are gorgeous especially the wild ones. They look so different from the tame ones! Who knew?

Don't work too hard. Take care. Be moderate in your enthusiasm but stay optimistic!

    I love giving advice!

  11. Henny, I just love seeing your beautiful little farm in the Spring! You have so many gorgeous flowers. Everything looks wonderful! Please be careful and don't overdo things working outside. I'd hate to see you get to hurting a lot again. I see you have your hummingbird feeder out. I can't wait to get ours out but it's still a bit too cold here. Soon I hope!
    You and Poppy take care!

  12. Ha Henny....you don't have to worry about any of us leaving....that's not going to happen! I can't believe your pictures....your yard looks like a fairyland! I can't believe all the beauty and all the flowers. Wow. How nice that you had a beautiful Easter Day with loved ones. Here we still have big mounds of snow and ice...our lake is still frozen....where will the Loons land? We are weeks if not a month behind normal in Spring arriving this year. I have faith that it will arrive though! Love your place...it looks gorgeous. Don't get down about the weather...it's weird everywhere! Take good care and don't overdo it! Love you Henny!

I covered my blueberry bushes and strawberry plants a couple times too. Hope we get some nice in-between weather and not all of a sudden 100 degrees! Nancy

  14. This has been a strange spring all over the globe. We had rain, snow and sleet on Easter and Monday too. Tonight we're having thunderstorms as I type. Tomorrow is supposed to be 90F. That's crazy. And it's been like this for a couple of months now. Warm, freezing, hot, cold. Pure craziness.
Your yard looks like a paradise of beautiful flowers. May I please come sit on your porch for awhile and play with Ellie and Ely? I could bring little Zoey and they would have great fun running around together.
    Blessings and love,
    Betsy

It's first thing Friday morning over here,
sun's out, as it has been for the last few
days though still a bit chilly..!

And! Wow! Henny! Your home/land looks really
    splendid..ALL..that colour, it's a pity we
can't put our noses to the screen and smell
them..it's amazing, said it many times before
love seeing flowers, plants etc..growing wild,
in the fields, hedge rows and gardens..and 'NOT'
cut and put in a silly vase on the window sill..
    so sad that..! :(.

I've been busy in my little garden, still to early
for the hanging baskets just yet..plenty of other
    things to do..! Ice~cream..! :O).

  19. Henny, your place is beautiful in the spring with all the flowering plants! We're just starting here with everything finally turning green and some pear trees and redbuds flowering. BTW, White Face (little pregnant feral cat) had her kittens. DH found them this morning and although he only took a quick look... (she was eating on the porch and watching him). He thinks she has 2 black and one white (could be more).

  20. Your azaleas are just glorious! Specially the wild pink ones with the long stamens! We have had the coolest spring since I moved here seven years ago which is okay with me. I dread the heat and humidity that will be here soon. Glad you could share Easter with family. We were alone and somehow I can’t used to a holiday being anything without family around the table.

  21. Your flowers are gorgeous. Thanks for the reminder---need to hang the hummingbird feeder. The indigo buntings and rose-breasted grosbeaks have arrived, so the hummers will be here shortly too.

  22. I could never not read your posts...it is like visiting with a friend. Love all the blooms shown here. We have had the crazy weather here...our daughters an hour east of us had snow on Monday. It covered the ground. I am beginning to think we will go from winter to summer in one big leap.

  25. LOVE your photos. We also have been having strange weather. At this time we are two weeks behind with Spring. I do not have one bloom and the one little crocus that was going to bloom, a wild rabbit ate.

  27. I don't think I've ever seen a photo of your cabin looking so pretty as it does here, with that snowball bush near it! And your azaleas!! It is spring. 84 here today. Crazy weather this year. We sure do need rain. It's dry as dust. My dear rooster was killed yesterday. I and the hens are very sad. Glad you are able to get outside and work, dear! That warms the heart.
