Been a few years since we put up any Christmas lights in the yard but this year just feels different. We needed something that would light up the dark nights here in the woods. We hung a star in the old well cover...
I like it, but you know how one thing leads to another...you know what would be pretty way out here?? A lighted deer I told Poppy.
So we have patiently waited to see a delivery truck arrive. We were given a delivery date of December 10th through 13th.
Late yesterday, a beat up pickup truck carring a load of hunting dogs pulled into our driveway! Poppy's first response? "D...! that looks like a dog hunter. What the h... is he doing in our yard"?
You see, out here, dog hunters are hated by still hunters. Anyhow, A man gets out of the truck, pulls out a large box and asks, is this such and such address? Yes, Poppy answered. Well, said the man, this package belongs to you. It was delivered to our hunting club about 6 miles from here and we don't even have an address there. The driver just sat the package out at the road.
We thanked the man over and over for bringing us the package. I mean, they could have kept it and we never would have known. Especially nice of the club since Poppy is pretty well known out here because of his quest to do away with all dog hunting.
"Kinda throws a new light on the dog hunters, doesn't it, Poppy?"
I said to the man in the truck, you know what's in that box, a deer. He laughed.
Anyhow...
Poppy went to work immediately setting up our new Christmas deer...
It may be a touch too fancy and the red cloth makes it look more like a camel, but that's okay, I wanted a deer and got one.
Great post, Henny! Your star and deer are perfect... just enough. I'm not into a lot of glitsy decorations, but I do like something simple. And it sure was nice for the hunting club to deliver your deer. As for Smokey, he seems a bit surprised in that shot. But wishing a Merry Christmas to all of you!
ReplyDeleteThe star and deer look great.
ReplyDeleteHow nice of that man to deliver the deer to you. Does my heart good to know of the kindness of others. :)
A very Merry Christmas to you, Poppy, and all your animals.
Oh, as much as I hate deer yours is lovely. We need one of those sitting just inside our fence, that would look cute. How nice of those guys who got it mistakenly to deliver it to you.
ReplyDeleteI had planned to send Christmas cards this year, but haven't done even one, so much for great expectations! Too late now most likely, so I will just say I wish you and Poppy, cats, and dogs, bunnies too, a very Merry Christmas and I hope that your new year is filled with good things and good fortune.
Thank you Victoria. There were so many things I had planned for Christmas that will not get done. Maybe next year. :( Hope you and your husband have a very Merry Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year. Won't be long now until gardening season!!
DeleteYour twinkling star and lighted deer are just the perfect pair, enough to gaze out of your kitchen window and enjoy all things bright !
ReplyDeleteWishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas thank you for sharing your beautiful home with us all in blogland.
Hugs dear friend,
Jo

We have a lot of berries here this year but I think it does differ from year to year. Your Christmas deer is beautiful and that was a very kind gesture by the neighbor. Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteI love it and I think it's perfect - My favorite holiday decorations are ones just like this, and it makes me smile to see it! ❤❤
ReplyDeleteThe deer looks great! Merry Christmas to you all!
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas to you and Poppy. You finally got your deer and it looks great. Too bad you don't have any berries on your holly bushes this year. I wonder why not? Maybe the bushes take a year off from time to time. Who knows!!
ReplyDeleteThere's a little irony in your story but that's okay as everything turned out well.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great Christmas story! It used to be like that around here - those that hunted with dogs weren’t liked very well by those who didn’t. Most of the guys in the dog club were older and eventually hunting with dogs became a thing of the past. I love the Christmas deer!
ReplyDeleteOh I love your Christmas Star AND your brand new deer too! They look just great in your yard. What a good story about how you finally got your Christmas Deer!!! Poppy did a fine job setting it all up! We wish you and Poppy and all your critters a wonderful and Blessed Christmas.
ReplyDeleteThank you Diane. Oh and we wish you and your husband a very Merry Christmas. I can't remember now if you have any animals. Love, Henny
DeleteMerry Christmas! And I love that star in the well cover!
ReplyDeleteOh what a beautiful star and camel, er...deer! Ha! Seriously, I love your deer. It makes everything so cheerful and happy in your yard. And how nice of the dog hunter to deliver it to you. So did Poppy have a change of heart?
ReplyDeleteDennis, Zoey and I are wishing you and Poppy a wonderful week of Christmas my friend. Merry, Merry Christmas!
Love and Blessings,
Betsy

ReplyDeleteMERRY CHRISTMAS to you HENNY & POPPY...have a great time there in Northern Carolina. Cheers KEV & CHRIS.
DeleteThe star and deer by your well are perfect! And your holly looks really good too. Mine doesn't seem to have any berries on it this year.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas to you Smokey, good thing your mom got a couple pictures before you probably ran off. We wish Merry Christmas to the rest of the furry family and hope that Dumperoo is inside protecting the inside decorations. I guess the dog hunter in a way was like Santa's sleigh delivering a package. And it looks like a pretty one. Merry Christmas to all of you
ReplyDeleteHenny,
ReplyDeleteThe deer and star are beautiful! Wishing you and your family ( 2 and 4 legged) A Merry Christmas and a Happy healthy New Year!
Kaye
Thank you Kaye! Merry Christmas to you...and a Happy New Year too.
DeleteHello Henny!! I've been absent from blogland for much too long! What a great story about the dog hunters. I don't know anything about hunter culture and I thought a dog hunter was someone who hunts dogs! Oops. Based on what another commenter mentioned, I think I understand now. Haha, silly me!
ReplyDeleteLovely to see you're still blogging and that all is well and pretty on your farm.
A blessed Christmas to you and your family!
Pilar, It is so good to hear from you again. I think about you every time I walk past the row of beauty berry bushes I planted. You were so kind to ask about them. Boy, have they grown! In my blog post I should have called them men that deer hunt with dogs. It does sound like men that hunt dogs. :) Wishing you a very nice Christmas and a Happy New Year.
DeleteHow perfect your deer and star go together. It really looks like they were made to be together. Love, love the Look. Merry Christmas and Happy 2022, from VERY cold Wisconsin. Bonnie
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Bonnie. Merry Christmas to you and a Happy New Year. Bet it is very cold there!!
DeleteIt was nice of that hunter to bring you your deer! And the deer looks nice with the star.
ReplyDeleteI love the holly berries - sad you don't have any this year!

That’s a good story about the arrival of your deer. Maybe the builders (Chinese?) think we ride deer in the U.S.?!! I love to decorate with holly and we have had trouble finding berries this year, too. I think they went wild producing last year and had no energy left or something. Anyway, we found enough for our wreath and a few extra for here and there.
ReplyDeleteHi, thank you for sharing about your holly, I just love your holly bush/tree.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas my dear friend.
Love to you, your family and pets.
xx oo
I absolutely love the star and the deer. The deer is on my list of hoped-for decorations some day. Yours is very pretty and the pose is so sweet! Gosh, the dog hunters did the right thing, that is wonderful. Neighborly despite Poppy's ire at dog hunters! I was scared at first. I thought it meant they were hunting dogs to eat. The holly is pretty. Some years I guess they skip the berries if the frost got the flowers?

ReplyDeleteYour decorations are just beautiful! I love the deer story too...I have been watching your daughter's YouTube channel and loving it. God bless you and your hubby and all the critters. Merry Christmas...
ReplyDeleteNice man to deliver your package! You have to wonder who some delivery companies hire for deliveries! Merry Christmas, your deer is very pretty!
ReplyDeletePrecious Post. Merry Christmas to you and your cute Family.
ReplyDeleteHis expression in that last photo, hahaha!! You know, once we had a Television brought to us by neighbors down the road, that had been misdelivered. It restored your faith in humanity!
ReplyDeleteHi Henny...I love your pretty deer. It really finished off that Christmas scene. Funny, I thought I would get a deer for our entrance this year but time got away on me and I didn't. Next year, I hope. Smokey looks terrific; so handsome and healthy. Thank you for the Christmas card. As soon as I opened it I picked up Cora and said, "Look, it's you." It is the sweetest card ever. That's the second one you sent me that looks just like her. :-)Have a wonderful Christmas tomorrow. I hope you and Poppy get to see your family over the holidays. Sending love your way. Deb, Wilson & Cora
ReplyDeleteAwww Smokey...he looks just like my Leo did! Cute. I LOVE your deer! Very nice!!! Wishing you a very Merry Christmas Henny!!! 🎄🎄♥♥
ReplyDeleteThe lighted deer sure is beautiful. I hope you had a Merry Christmas and will have a very Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteCatching up with you Henny! Love the deer! What a wonderful story for poppy and you to share about the dog hunters and the bringing you a deer! I think that's a great story. Happy New Year, much love! Terry
