A little decorating, A little painting

Seems like the harder I try to be a good blogger, the worse I do, and getting worser and worser. Is worser a word? Shakespeare said, "I cannot hate thee worser than I do",  (just learned this from Merriam-Webster). 😊 Also learned from the Collins English Dictionary that the word 'worser' is found only in some regional dialects, and is considered non-standard. Sounds like me!

Anyhow, been doing a little decorating, 'little' for sure...

I did bring in lots of cedar (from limbs hanging over the dam that needed to be cut anyway).

and the mantle...nothing special, just set up parts of the little Christmas village without taking down the Indian pictures...

Seems like everyone, well, except me, is going all out with decorations this Christmas. Oh, but I am excited about Christmas. I love Christmas!

We did move the little tree from in front of the windows to the wall space under the deer...

and picked out just a few ornaments, but then noticed the green cord is showing and half the lights are burned out...sigh. Well, half my lights are burned out too.

and again...I have pulled out my old 'Country Living' magazines from the late 1980's and early 1990's. These were the most beautiful Christmas magazines, and usually featured log homes.

Candy canes on the coffee table. Have you tried the 'hot chocolate' flavored ones?

Here's a bit of news.  Lowes Home Improvements installed our new front door this week. Yay!!

The glass in the old door had become cloudy. After 31 years, the seal had broken and no amount of cleaning made it better. It was awful and depressing to look at? I dearly love clean windows so having to look through this cloudy glass for the last few years was driving me crazy.

The new door! I LOVE it, but it's white and needs painting. The white is beautiful, isn't it?
but just doesn't go with these dark cedar walls. Here's the outside...

Tomorrow I will start the tedious job of painting. The color we picked for the door is 'sweet tea,' and the trim will be dark, like the board over the door. I will post 'after' pictures.

This new blogger!!! I like big print and Blogger is determined to pick the print size for me...and not only that...mix all print sizes together!!!  and move my words around! I hate how it all looks!

Better say goodnight. It's Poppy's bedtime. He will be in here to check the emails one last time.

This is a terrible post, but I'll publish it anyway. Thank you friends for putting up with me.  Maybe a picture of Smokey will make things better...

Love,
Henny

  1. Smokey looks absolutely gorgeous. His fur looks like silk. What a beauty. I love your new doors. I know how aggravating looking out of a cloudy window can be. This new one looks great and you will have so much more light coming in. That light during the dark days of December, January, and February is a real lifesaver. But then comes March with a few nice warmish days sprinkled in and suddenly it's SPRING!

    1. Oh and I do need the light! Thank you Vic. Smokey really does have beautiful fur. He is so soft and shiny. I think about you most days and wonder if you are in the yard working. :) I've raked leaves again yesterday and today.

  3. Your Christmas decorations are all beautiful! So far I just have the tree up and decorated but I hope to get more done this weekend. I love the new door and I sure understand why you want a clear view outside with your wonderful little farm. Is that Chicken Welcome sign new? I don't remember seeing it but it sure is cute. Smokey sure looks comfy and seems to be sleeping like a baby! Have a great weekend Henny!

  4. This is NOT a terrible post. It's newsy and happy and just perfect. I love all of your Christmasy touches and your new door is wonderful. I think it will be perfect with it's new coat of paint. I can only imagine the beautiful view you have out that door.
Smokey looks pretty happy and comfortable on the bed. He looks so much like our girls, Amelia and Frannie did. We lost them both last year within 6 months of each other. That was a hard time but they were beautiful girls and gave lots of love and laughter through the years.
I hope your weekend is a beautiful and happy one my friend.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  8. Such a happy blog post. I love your decorations! Earlier this week I went to one of my granddaughter's Christmas program and was pleased to see so many more people had lights up this year.

  9. I do simple decorations too! And that door looks stunning-I like it white but can't wait to see sweet tea. Merry Christmas

  10. Hi Henny- I like your Mantle Decoration and your brand new Doors. Boy, Smokey has sure got it made - lounging around. Best Wishes in the lead up to Christmas to you and Poppy. Regards. KEV.

  11. Hi Henny! I haven't felt much like posting either, so I understand. I dearly loved Country Living magazines. I used to hold onto my magazines, but have since gotten rid of all of them. Congratulations on a new door. I'm looking forward to finding out what "sweet tea" looks like! -Jenn

  12. I enjoyed your post. I wondered if you could leave the inside of the door white? When we replaced our windows and external doors, we were obliged to have brown on the outside, but changed the inside to white and it made a massive difference to the light in the room. Where you live is beautiful. Am I right in thinking that you are in USA? If so, can I ask which part you are in? My nephew lives in South Carolina.

    1. Thank you! I'm sure going to take a good look at that white door for the inside. Would never have thought of doing that. We live in North Carolina. Growing up, we lived in Summerville SC, near Charleston. I love South Carolina. Thank you for the comment.

  13. Henny, no post is a bad post. Love seeing your Christmas decorations. Mine are less than that, just a tree this year.
And not a big one. Saw our local cut your own tree farms are closed this year for covid. Sad for family tradition, but safety is better. I could see a bit of blue sky and bright sunshine out your new door windows! And of course, how did
Smokey end up the only one on the couch?

  14. NOT a terrible post!!! :) I LOVE the new door, you must feel so relieved. ALL of our window seals are broken here, we knew when we bought the place that we'd eventually have to replace all of the windows, but that won't be for a good 5 years I think. I love the decorations! :)

  15. You're posts are interesting as we get more than words. I can see things. I can see you rushing around. I can see you sizing things up like the new door and what you plan to do with it. So only a poor post in your eyes.

  16. A picture of Smokey or Eli always makes for a great post. I loved seeing the old magazines, what a joy they are. The new door looks good, I am looking forward to seeing them painted.

  17. I like that the doors open instead of slide. I don't think you could write a bad post if you tried, Henny! Your home is lovely and now we know where you got you ideas from! Always love your pet photos.💖

  19. Lovely to see your decorations Henny, especially the little tree all decked out.
I love Cedar branches to decorate with, and the smell seems to permeate throughout the house and make everything festive.
Your front door is perfect, I can't wait to see the before and after paint job.
The old issue of Country Living were the best, they were filled to the brim with breathtakingly beautiful nostalgia, seems like these days it's all advertisements about drugs.
Thank you for sharing your posts Henny, I so look forward to them.
    Hugs,
    ~Jo

  20. Another great post from Henny Penny Lane! If you need some help painting that door, I will be right over. (Not...for I am wore out from painting around here.) The new door will be lovely when you are finished!

  21. Henny, I love window pics... and we also keep a candle in the window. I too keep old Christmas magazines and love to look at them... have an old trunk half full that DH doesn't understand why I don't just throw them out. And no, I've not tasted hot chocolate flavored candy canes! Enjoy your new door... and Smokey looks very comfortable (sure miss our Ghost).

  22. I love your new door. I feel the same way about the glass. Our front door is a double one, too, and was solid when we moved here. We had the middle cut out of both sides and glass put in. We live on a busy street, though and had to get something besides plain glass that I'd have had to cover for privacy. I love the look of the design we got, though, and now have light coming in. I had hated the darkness in the entry hall from the old doors. Give me lots of light! Your mantle and window look pretty. I can't get to my decorations stored in the attic so am waiting for someone else to bring them down. No one is coming this year anyhow, so it's not important to me to decorate. It's just not the same. But, we'll stay home and try to stay safe. You and Poppy stay safe!

    1. I'm always glad to see a comment from you Peg. I feel the same way about needing light, especially in this dark cabin. And the same about decorating too. Christmas just won't be the same this year. I hope we all stay safe and the new year is better for all of us. Hope you a Merry Christmas.

  23. I really like your new front door no matter if it stays white or you paint it. "Sweet Tea" sounds like a lovely colour.
It doesn't take much to give a festive look to a home. I think many of us went all-out because of the depressing times we're in. Take care and be cozy!!

  24. Nothing at all terrible about your post - its always a delight to read you posts.
Things looking so nice around your home. Love the new doors. We have similar doors going out on to our deck and out from the basement.

  26. Love your new door Henny! It's going to be perfect after you get it painted the color you want it. I love all of your Christmas decorations.....the boughs really add alot don't they. Do they smell like Christmas too? Hot chocolate flavored candy canes? That sounds good to me. I have Country Living magazines too...but didn't save the old ones. Hope you two have a wonderful Christmas! Who knows what 2021 will bring. May God be with us thru it all.

  35. Well, I disagree with you . . . I think it is a lovely post and a very honest one. We don't all have to be the Martha Stewart of decorating and wouldn't it be overly boring if we were? I think so! I look around our little home and I see more that I could have done, but my heart wasn't in it. So I did what I could to not hide from Christmas, but to honor the celebration of Christ's birth and to honor the memory of my Steve, who loved Christmas. Some years will be more festive than others and this year with all that's going on in the world, it just doesn't feel as joyful. If I had little children in my home I would probably do all that I could to make the season brighter. Seeing Christmas through the eyes of children is always a joy to behold.
I love that you have a collection of 1980 Country Living Christmas issues. I love the older issues of this magazine and think that their editors could actually learn a few things from the editors before them. The magazine seemed more "down home country" then "homey" I guess, where today it seems more commercial and urban country. "Urban Country", now there's an oxymoron for you, what is that suppose to mean, anyway?
Love your window with the cedar sitting gently on the sills . . . it's so charming and I'll bet it smells heavenly. Looking forward to seeing your new door all painting and inviting on your cabin.
God bless you and your husband this Christmas.
    You're blogging sister,
    Connie :)
