We did have unusual weather for Halloween, especially being the last day of October. It was windy, hot, and humid, and 85 degrees! The storms came through here around 9:30 with heavy rain and winds that scattered dead tree limbs and leaves over the yard.
Smokey said he didn't hear a thing!
Looks now like we are headed right into winter. Wish we could have a few more pretty fall days...but that's North Carolina...jump from hot and sticky to freezing cold.
I'll have to credit my friends and neighbors for the fall display on the front porch.
Neighbor Ann brought the marigolds a few days ago. She said the rain beat them down. Then yesterday I came home from grocery shopping and found the long-handled gourds, a surprise from my friend Nellie.
So yesterday I closed the little vent windows in the greenhouse to make it warmer, but it still looks cold inside...
Actually, I have been thinking of using those big emergency candles to burn in the greenhouse for warmth. Wish I could come up with something. Those small space heaters run the electric bill up. Any one have any ideas?

I love your little greenhouse space, a perfect place for a cup of tea and visiting with friends. Eli is just the cutest. I have no idea what that plant is, and hope someone will know.How nice to have special neighbors like that, when I first saw the marigolds, the image brought up to mind the wonderful scent that they have.A lovely flower and extra pretty in the fall time.

ReplyDeleteCute greenhouse. Living in dry northern CA, as I do, the thought of candles burning unattended gives me the heebie-jeebies. But , I don't have any constructive suggestions for your heating dilemma. Could the unknown flower be a stalk of wild asparagus that bloomed and went to seed?

When I had a greenhouse I used to place bricks and water-filled clear plastic bottles on the bench beside my plants. They would absorb the heat during the day and then release it during the night, but then our winters never got as cold as yours (we never had snow) so I don't know how well it would work for your situation.
ReplyDeleteI thought your candle idea in the greenhouse was a good one... made me think how they built fires in vinyards to keep away the frost. But I guess it could be a fire hazard with animals around that might get in and knock a candle over. The gourds look a lot like some of the pottery sculptures one of the ladies makes in the studio. And Mr. Eli is such a good looking dog!
ReplyDeleteOh Eli is adorable! I love those gourds, never seen anything like that before! When I think about my future greenhouse, I think that maybe a little solar panel might be a good idea, somehow hooked up to a small heater...don't know how yet, but I plan to have my greenhouse heated in the winters here.

ReplyDeleteHave you looked online for economical greenhouse heaters ? The idea of using an emergency candle is a good one, but miss one cold day, and then everything would be gone :(

ReplyDeleteAbout heating the greenhouse... I have sort of the same problem with my enclosed porch. I'd like to sit out there in chilly weather but it's just too cold. I thought about a propane heater but I'm told you absolutely have to have a window partly opened for safety. If the window is open believe me it won't get warm in there.
I hope someone can identify your mystery stalk!
Meant to add, I read that you can insulated your greenhouse with bubble wrap, and it helps tremendously.

A cup of tea with you in the little greenhouse sounds just wonderful. Poor Eli! He does look tired! Millie normally doesn't bark much...except at night when the coyotes come ever so close to our house.

ReplyDeleteThere are unvented propane heaters. And unless your greenhouse is air tight, I don't think propane would be a problem. Some even have thermostats.
ReplyDeleteSolar might be an option, too if your greenhouse has a sunny side.
We didn't get any trick or treaters at our house but we didin't expect any.

That picture is priceless 😊 Protecting you from goblins must be hard work. The only thing I know of to help naturally radiate heat is compost. If you had a bin in the greenhouse or a heap just outside against a wall??? Will be curious to see what you come up with.
ReplyDeleteEli is priceless! I was thinking rocks to absorb heat and then give it off of the night, too. But if you didn't have sun coming in, it might not work. I think I read every comment to see if anyone knew what that plant is. All I saw mentioned was wild asparagus.

Hi Henny- Yes, jumping from Autumn straight into Winter does not sound fun- we Humans need to be able to adjust. Started Raining here to-day at 4:00pm with a huge deluge - now 10:30pm and still steadily Raining- hoping the Folks to the North in drought are getting this much needed rain. Been 31Deg C here around Mid-Day. Stay Warm there. Best Wishes. KEV.
ReplyDeletePlastic jugs or buckets painted black and filled with water will absorb heat during the day and then release heat during the night. If you set up a greenhouse heater with a thermostat for the times when the temps go too low, it will help keep costs down. Also a fan blowing air around will help keep frost away.
ReplyDeleteIs the mystery plant millet? Does she have a bird feeder? We've found unusual plants growing that we hadn't planted and decided it came from the bird seed.
The storm blew through here with lots of wind a rain. Temps dropped 30 degrees from evening till the next morning. It blew several of the panels out of our teeny tiny greenhouse. Fortunately we didn't have any plants in it. We have a space in our basement to keep the plants over winter.
It's gotten cold now. My wife says the house feels like the north pole.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had a greenhouse like you have. Do you grow any vegetables in it in winter? I put my oil lantern on my porch and it heated while it burned. I wonder if that would do it. I like the idea of the emergency candle too.

I have always wanted to grow some long handled gourds. These look really nice and those pretty marigolds. Nice of your neighbor to leave those for you.
I hope you post what that plant is when you find out. I have seen things like that here growing wild near the road but never knew what they were.

Looks like you are getting ready for winter...a greenhouse is so nice when the weather outdoors turns cold. Hope the candles will do the job in keeping things warm. Eli looks like he is trying to catch up on his rest from keeping the ghosts and goblins away. :)!! Hugs
ReplyDeleteI don't have any brilliant ideas for warming the green house. Adam tried a crazy contraption one winter that used a mason jar and a clay pot :) Basically our green house in winter is our front porch, wrapped in heavy plastic sheeting. So, that side of our house is the "warmer" that keeps it warmer, plus it is facing south and gets good sunlight. That's probably the best thing of all - sunlight.
