Hey friends,
Thank you for the nice comments on my last post. I've simply got to do better at replying. I really do appreciate your friendship.
Let's see! Since my last visit with you all...
I've been prescribed glasses, bifocals even, which are only a nuisance. Why, I can see better without them...
had a hurricane hit... (actually, we had only an inch and a half of rain and a little wind), thankfully!
spent two full days in Raleigh for doctor appointments...
attended a birthday dinner for Andee, at Lynn and Jason's home...
picked all the beans in the garden and pulled up the vines. Wish you could see the pot of beans cooking on the stove...
completely wore out my little yellow mower. The front right wheel is about to fall off. :( whatever will I do?? Poppy has been asking what I want for my birthday this Saturday and I've been telling him 'pizza', but after mowing this morning, what I want is a new mower...and soon!
Meanwhile...
The newly planted knockout roses are blooming a little...I'm so tickled!
The chives are blooming too so I've put a few pots around the new bed.
the dryer sheets filled the air with such a nice sweet smell, Poppy was afraid it would drive all the deer from the area, and deer season comes in soon.
and while on the subject of Poppy...
here's a little story he told me when he got home from work today. You know he works part time in a grocery store. Well he was straightening up the luncheon meats and happened to look down at the floor and there sat a tiny little frog. Inside the store! In the meat department! He picked it up and said it looked fine except one leg was injured. Poppy carried the frog through the meat department and out the back door and down the steps from the loading dock, crossed the road into a wooded area and put the little frog in a safe place. This man has a big heart.
Oh, let me tell you about a rose bush I dug out of the ground.
It's a pink fairy rose. I've never posted a picture, even though this little rose has tried desperately to bloom every year since it was planted fifteen years ago. After mowing, I began pulling the bamboo grass from around the roots, then it hit me...DID THE POOR THING UP! So I did and all this was tangled in with its roots...
seven more fairy rose bushes, each with it's own root ball, enough ivy for three pots, a pile of monkey grass, and one pink spirea...all healthy and with good root systems. Don't know how that fairy rose ever bloomed at all. Finally got all these into pots and carried up to the greenhouse/garden.
I sure can go on and on about any thing, can't I? But I'm done now, talking about the grapevines, for a while. :)
Love,
Henny

and the newly planted grape vines are doing well...
I've replaced the dryer sheets with a couple of bandannas...

You see, he has a tree stand awfully close to the new grape arbor...
From way up high in the stand, he can see to the end of the dam and into the woods beyond. He has never shot a deer from the stand, in fact, I don't think he has ever used it.and while on the subject of Poppy...

Henny, everything is looking and sounding great at your house these days. I love your grape arbor....love your knock out rose bushes, all your chives, the rose bush you rescued and the cute stories you tell about poppy and the frog! You're so ambitious! Hope you get used to your glasses! I send early Happy Birthday wishes to you... hope you get something you want for your birthday!
ReplyDeleteThank you Diane. I love hearing from you.
DeleteLove reading about your sweet life on the farm. I could never pick up a frog, myself, but so glad there are brave ones like your Poppy..lol I once accidentally stepped on a tiny one on our driveway and I was so sad. (like the time I could not avoid a squirrel on the road). On a day like 9/11..we have to be thankful there is love in the world..even for the small creatures. Have a great birthday..hope it includes something sweet..like a yummi cake. :0) ..(and your mower).. :0(
ReplyDeleteThank you ChiChi Mum. Oh, it is so easy to step on a tiny frog this time of the year. You are absolutely right about 9/11. I don't think any of us will ever be the same after that terrible day.
DeleteYou know, if you weren't busy there would be something to worry about.
ReplyDeleteThat is so true Red.
DeleteI remember your birthday because it's also my older grandson's birthday too. I hope you get a new mower AND the pizza. You work so hard you deserve to be spoiled a bit.
ReplyDeleteI've seen pictures of those Knock Out Roses and they sure are pretty. If I wasn't so crazy about Rugosas I'd try the Knock Out ones.
I appreciate that Granny Marigold. Bet your grandson looks forward to one of your cakes for his birthday. Seems like I had a Rugosa rose once. A purple one.
DeleteYou have been very busy on your little farm. Always enjoy visiting you.
ReplyDeleteHow thoughtful of Poppy to care for a little frog.
Thank you Happyone. and I enjoy your blog very much!
DeleteThe grapes along the trail I walk are getting so sweet-tasting now. Most of the vines are high in the trees so I have to wait for the fruit to fall. By this time next year, you will, hopefully, have enough grapes for muscadine jelly, which is my favorite. Happy Birthday to you, Dear Henny!
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about the wild grapes. We have a vine growing on a small tree that hangs over the dam. We counted about six grapes on it and one is turning purple. I love the wild grapes too. Hope we do grow enough grapes to make jelly. That would be wonderful. Thank you so much.
DeleteYou have been busy for sure; I like the story of your fairy roses and the injured frog Poppy rescued. Yes, he has a kind heart.
ReplyDeleteThank you Terra.
DeleteOh my, I’ve been prescribed bi-focals but had to stop wearing them because they triggered my vertigo and the spinning feeling that caused made me afraid of falling especially if I was going downstairs. I now have a pair for distance and another for close up. I love roses, I’m glad you dug up your fairy rose, I had a problem with a dog rose bush I’d planted for my daughter when Che was little, moving it made all the difference in the world. Your husband is so kind for rescuing that frog.
ReplyDeleteThank you Mary. I sure understand about the bi-focals. Vertigo is awful. I don't blame you for not wearing them. Sure wish I had gotten one for distance and one for close up. I am still using my reading glasses.
DeleteThere is so much in this post that I don't know what to respond to! I guess I'll just say that your grape vines are really taking off. I hope Poppy is not using them as deer bait.
ReplyDeleteThank you Linda. Sometimes I don't know when to stop. :)
DeleteMy goodness you are a busy bee. I love my new glasses with bifocals. It took a couple of days to get used to them but now? I can read the speedometer in the car without leaning really close. Love your roses and it's nice to see the grape arbor doing well. Good for Poppy rescueing the little frog. What a good guy. Thanks for visiting my blog. I really appreciate it and the comments you made especially about my baby, Chloe. She is really a sweet, sweet dog. We have had two other dogs in our married life who have all lived nice long lives. Chloe is really special to me and has spoiled me for other dogs. She minds perfectly and never, ever leaves our yard, either at home or at the lake. She is just about as perfect a dog as they come
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful Thursday.
Blessings,
Betsy
Hey Betsy. Maybe I will get used to the glasses. It just seems like the line is right in my way of seeing. Chloe sure is a pretty dog.
DeleteI assume weather has been good for the plants. Dorian didn't give us any bad rains or winds. I was really shocked. Usually when one hits the coast, it hits us a bit too.
ReplyDeleteYes, we have had enough rain this summer which is unusual. Thanks Adam.
DeleteHenny, you tickle me. You find so many things to do around your yard! That sure is a lot of plants you dug up with the fairy rose. I'll have to go ask Google what a fairy rose is. I don't think I've ever heard of one. Poppy sure was thoughtful to take that little frog outside to a safe spot. I'm glad you didn't get blown away for flooded out from Dorian. I worried about you. That crazy, horrible storm was still a category 2 when it hit Canada! We had 75 mph winds in St. Louis from hurricane Ike, though, so I guess you can't count on them to die down quickly when they hit land. Enjoy your time outdoors. It won't be long before cold weather sets in. Right now I'm ready. We've had heat indexes of 100+ the last couple of days with high humidity.
ReplyDeleteHey Peg. Yes, Poppy tells me I look for things to do. I am sure looking forward to some cooler fall weather. It was 97 here today. I had no idea St. Louis could get winds that high from a hurricane. But then, a few years ago Asheville had lots of flooding and winds from a hurricane and Asheville is in the mountains. I ordered the fairy rose from a gardening catalog. It has very small pink roses. It is pretty. Thank you for leaving a comment.
DeleteThe rose garden is beautiful and you've got a great start on the vines! Happy early Birthday!
ReplyDeleteThank you Bonnie. I appreciate that.
DeleteoooooO! Look at those lovely little vines..
ReplyDeleteI've seen a few of those planted and growing
in my time..as my family own a vineyard back
home in Sicily..though for years now, it has
been part of a co~operative..! :). So our
wines go all over the world now! Saluti! :).
Just gone seven over here..first lemon tea of
the day..Very impressed with Poppy's 'hide' as
we would call them over here..and l'll partial
to venison to..l have two lovely haunches in the
deep freeze at the moment..one will be used in
a couple weeks, my birthday, to feed 10 of us,
at one of two dinner parties l'm having! :O).
Love the story about the frog..Bless!
I expect when Poppy put the frog down he told
it to 'HOP IT'...! :o). HeHe!
Silly Frog jokes...
What happened to the frog’s car when his parking meter expired?
It got toad!!
What’s green green green green green?
A frog rolling down a hill!
What is a frog’s favorite game?
Croaket
HeHe! Bless! Best get on..Lots to do
to~day..Market day in town, few bits and
pieces needed..Time for another lemon tea
first..Suns just coming out to..nice weekend! :o)

Willie, I love the frog jokes. Poppy is hoping to kill a trophy buck this deer season. I'm hoping not! :) I sure hope the three grapevines grow big and produce lots of grapes. That would make me so happy. I went grocery shopping today too.
Deletehat a heart Poppy has, it was lovely to read about his kindness to the frog. Wishing you a Happy Birthday and hoping you get a new mower. Take care.
ReplyDeleteOh, thank you so much.
DeleteHi Henny- Wow! What a huge Post you've written. Like the story of Poppy and the Frog. You've been very busy and it is a blessing that the Hurricane effect sounds minimal- I actually did hear an announcement on the radio that the Hurricane was heading for Carolina - I immediately thought of you guys and certainly hoped you'd be out of harms way. All good here. Best Wishes. KEV.
ReplyDeleteHey Kev. Appreciate your thinking of us. It is always a worry days before a hurricane hits, well, until they are sure just where it will make landfall. We were fortunate again.
DeleteThat tree stand is funny! And I'm not trying to make light of deer getting shot, but it does look funny. How exciting the grapes are growing-- and what a relief the hurricane did you no harm. The best story in this post is about all those root systems entangled with one another! It must feel very satisfying to pull them out and make some sense out of them. It'll be interesting to see what you do next, Henny, you are so busy! Glad tidings for that little frog-- must've been a child that brought it in a nd lost track of it? Anyway, it sure knew who to go to for help! Blessings to all : )
ReplyDeleteHey Pilar. Tree stands are a funny sight. How a man can sit for hours in one is beyond me. I did feel good about untangling that mess of roots. Now I need to find a special spot to plant the fairy roses.
DeleteAh Henny it does sound like you have been quite busy. Poppy would be a man after my own heart - such a sweet endeavor of caring for one of God's special creatures. Glad to see your roses are still blooming...everything in my garden is pretty tired. Some of my green beans are starting to bloom again - if frost holds out may get a few more for on the table :)! Always a delight to visit. Take care and have a blessed weekend. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteHey Debbie. Thank you for the nice comment. All those beans I gathered off the vines made a huge potful. I sent my neighbor a big bowl of them. Poppy is tired of beans and I would never have eaten that many by myself. :)
DeleteI love reading your blog, Henny! It, and you, are awesome!
ReplyDeleteMarge, thank you for such a nice comment. I appreciate it so much.
DeleteBusy as a beaver, is what my Mama would have said about you! I wish I had the "Umph" to do half the stuff you do! I have some rose bushes that I will be digging up and transplanting once it starts to cool off. We are still having temps in the high '90s, so everything is still in growing stage. I hope the little froggy is fairing well in his safe place. I love a man (anyone actually) who is not so macho that they won't stop to move a turtle off the road or help an injured animal!
ReplyDeleteGrace & Peace,
Pam
Thank you Pam. Oh, it was 97 degrees here today. Where is fall? I'm with you when it comes to a man with a tender heart. Poppy stopped late one night coming home from work and picked up an owl that had been hit by a car. He put it in the passenger seat and put his coat around it. The owl rode home that way. We carried it to one of those wildlife centers to be cared for.
DeleteNice to read this newsy post. I'd ask for a new lawnmower for my bday also. ;-) I used to ask for bags of potting soil. We who mow, need out lawn mowers.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your newly potted plants, I hope they give you LOTS of blooms.
Love the story about Poppy and the little frog.
Enjoy the rest of your week ~ FlowerLady
Thank you FlowerLady. You sound like me...I've asked for potting soil and things like that too, many times. Hope you have a good weekend.
DeleteI just love you Henny, I love reading your posts.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the glasses. I have an appointment in November. I think readers are in my future.
Poppy, how sweet to rescue that frog.
Take care my friend,
Carla
Carla, thank you so much. I may just keep using my reading glasses and use the new ones for driving and watching TV.
DeleteSo glad to see this post...it does sound like you have been super busy. I wish I could smell those beans cooking!
ReplyDeleteI have been wearing bifocals a long time...I still hate having to wear them. They are such a pain when you need to read in certain positions. And I still bang my frames on stuff sometimes. But I could not make it without them. I would not be able to read anything without glasses. And I could get by with reading glasses, but was always looking for them. I started wearing bifocals till I could leave them on.
Hey Rose. Thank you. That's what I need to do...leave my glasses on so I can get used to them. I love to smell green beans cooking too.
DeleteI'm glad you found all those good plants among the rose bush, and it was fun to see the new grape arbor, a good idea! It's nice the frog has a safe home.
ReplyDeleteThank you. It was amazing to find all those plants tangled in with the rose, especially seven more rose bushes.
DeleteYou truly do have a green thumb, HP. It seems you can make anything grow -- and you put them in pots, and they don't die!!! When I put plants into pots, it's like putting them into their coffins.
ReplyDeleteYour arbor and your birdbath bed both look lovely. Aren't we ready for cooler weather so we can spend more hours outside?
Hey MK. I think a lot of it is just luck. Wish I had all the money back from plants that I bought and let die. YES! I am so ready for cooler weather. It is so sticky hot. We're lucky if we can work outside until noon.
ReplyDeleteI follow you on gfc #182, follow back? :)

I'm ready for fall...but I do need to get out there and save my two roses and texas sage that I have let go in this heat. It's just been a rough couple of months around here and I haven't felt up to it. Here's hoping for a quick temp drop back into sane territory and enough of these 90s!
ReplyDeleteHI henny great post oh i love your place it looks magicial, love your garden and all the things that you do in it,your vines are going to look great where you have put them.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday for the weekend my friend and i hope you get your pizza and new mower xx
I need to make a trip to the eye doctor really bad. I have gottten were I have to wear my reading glasses all the time to see. I hope everything iw going good for you an Poppy! Love you both!
ReplyDeleteI hope you're having a great birthday, dear friend!!!
ReplyDeleteBifocals, all I can say is ick. I'm sure I would be prescribed those as well, but I'd rather just squint and adjust lol...I know how you feel! The grape vines are looking great! And what luck to have fairy rose bushes! I can't grow roses (of any variety) here because of the short rainy and cold season, but I hope to have a nice rose garden one of these days when I move away from this area!
