and mowed...
We had three beautiful sunny cool days last week; Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. I mean cool like waking up to 57 degrees. Unbelievable in August in North Carolina. But, the heat has come back, and with a vengeance! 96 hot humid degrees today!!!
Anyhow, back to the garden. It was time to pull up the buggy bean vines, the squash, and the cucumber vines, and dig a spot for stir-fry broccoli and a few collard plants.
and that's exactly what we did; set out twelve broccoli and six collard plants. If they do any good it will shock me. I've never been able to grow any kind of fall crop. This should give my sister and brother-in-law a hardy laugh. Seems like it was 254 collard plants they set out last fall. :( But that's okay. I did say this is a teeny tiny garden.
and thank you! I feel so much better about this plant...
Oh, and did I tell you about the friendly spider who followed me home?
This is his web on the back screen door. On one of those cool days last week I "finally" got the weeds pulled from the Iris bed at the bottom of the back steps.
Anyhow, busy busy pulling weeds, I reached down and almost grabbed the spider and it's web which was spread between two or three Iris leaves. Carefully, I finished the weeding, leaving the web and the spider untouched. Well, the next morning, the spider and it's web had moved up the back steps, all seven of them, and up the screen door. I'm wondering if he tried to get inside but found the door locked. Last summer we had two of these big spiders in the garden.

I wouldn't mind some goats in my yard so they could mow the grass.

ReplyDeleteYour flowers are doing so well... Zinnias if I'm not mistaken. Only 2 of my Zinnia seeds sprouted and those 2 have done super well.
ReplyDeleteI'm not exactly scared of spiders but I do find the bigger ones creepy. In Fall their webs are everywhere and look amazing in the early morning with the dew drops on them.
It's looking nice and green there. Here everything is brown unless it has been watered regularly.

I think we are all looking forward to some nice cool days. Henny Penny Lane is always kept so nicely. About all I have left in my little garden, besides flowers, is okra. I have frozen a lot of it this year, which will be a nice treat when the cold wind blows.

ReplyDeleteespecially the two on each of my windowsills in the front
room and dining room..one called Charlotte, the other one,
has never had a name, don't ask why..Don't know!
And Autumn will be here soon, the Virginia creeper will
be covered in them, just the ordinary common and garden spider!
I feed them with Crane fly..(Daddy long legs)..amazing things! :).
HeHe! So much for death and destruction...! :).
So..Poppy's a bit of a 'mowner' at least he's sat down doing it,
those mowers are great fun, they even have races with them now,
something like the Gran Prix..well, not quite..! :).

and things..and still in full flower!

It is refreshing to come across someone who is not afraid of spiders-- that said, if a spider "followed me home" right to my door, uhh I think I'd feel just a little uneasy! The look of it, and its web, is wild and not meant for the house, I don't think. You are funny not to get scared. The okra flower is very pretty.

ReplyDeleteYour garden and flowers are so pretty. And I love okra! Its not easy to find around here. Occasionally I'll find some at a farmers market but not often. My back yard is so weedy right now I'm embarrassed for anyone to see it. Its been soo hot and humid and the mosquitoes are so bad this year I just can't make myself go out and weed. It will get done when it cools off I guess. Good luck with your fall plantings!
ReplyDeleteI am all for keeping the spiders in the garden. Making there web on my backdoor would be too close for me. I'm still canning it's been salsa this week and then I want to make some more marinara sauce. I love gardening, but I have to say that I don't enjoy the end of the year when everything has to be pulled up. It's like a race between getting as much from your garden as possible and pulling it up before frost gets it and the plants turn gross and messy to handle. I need a dose of your energy, mine has been dwindling down lately.

your garden looks great, but I am so over Summer. In Northern Indiana, and lots of other places, it has been too hot and humid for us to be outside. The weeds have grown to a tropical forest. I get a day or two to take care of them and then it rains...and rains...and rains. I wasted my time. I know some people like spiders, but I do not and we have had an over abundance of them this year starting in JULY. They never ususally become a nuisance until September. I am allergic to them and when they bite, it's always more than once in the same area and I itch enough to make me crazy. Enjoy the rest of your summer. I suspect yours lasts longer than mine.

When we finally got rain, the grass really took off! We have a lot to mow before we get baby chickens again. I always think when I'm raking hay for 3 hours or more, "I could have gone somewhere far from home in that length of time." lol There's not much left in our garden but grass; however I have been able to freeze several pints of purple hull peas. Zeke, the scarecrow, was successful in keeping the deer away from things.

ReplyDeleteWe are still getting okra and tomatoes. Your plant is beautiful I really enjoyed those cool days we had. We just planted or green and collard patch. I hope we get some rain soon to help it grow.

I believe that IS Autumn Joy; Mine has had the same growth habit when planted in a pot. Like you, I am fall planting for the first time. What have we got to lose?! I dropped in some sugar snap peas, parsley, cilantro and beets. Cross fingers!

Henny love your teeny garden. Sometimes they are just perfect for growing a good crop of smaller veggies. Other than lettuce my fall crops generally do not fair well either. ReplyDeleteThose zipper spiders are just fascinating -- so big sometimes, but cool to look at. Yes, I enjoyed those three days too. Sigh. It was a harbinger of our future joy :) Even my husband, who loves the heat, is longing for cool temps and hot chocolate. Soon.
