A very rainy day

Our first frost date is usually around October 15th. This year it's late arriving but by daylight tomorrow  we should have our first freezing temperature of 32 degrees. I dread it. I'll take sunshine and warm weather anytime!

When it rains like this, instead of finding something constructive to do inside...I walk from window to window, staring out at the rain.

It was simply pouring, as mama used to say...

Poppy was working at Food Lion that day last week when the heavy rains came. The house was quiet with just me and the dogs and the sound of the rain coming down. Kinda makes you want to build a roaring fire in the fireplace, doesn't it?

rain, rain, rain from the back porch too...

You know what we need here?? An old fashioned cast iron woodstove on the porch. Been my dream since day one!

Looking a little dreary on this end of the porch too.

oops! missed the bedroom windows. Need to go back inside and take a look...

G

The kitty cats were here too, but under the bed in the sewing room, fast asleep.

Ellie watched from the front porch as the rain washed through the yard...

Guess thats it for my rainy day post, I started yesterday. It was cold when we got up this morning, 33 degrees! Lots of unsettled weather this time of the year, with the change of seasons.

Saw the doctor last Monday. He said in two weeks the cast can come off my wrist and I will then need a little physical therapy. Sure hope that means I can get back to work around here. :)

Thank you dear friends!

Love,
Henny

  2. Even though I prefer the sun, I've survived droughts on the farm, so I always thank the Lord for the rain, too.

  3. That's some heavy rain! We are blessed with a cleared off afternoon here, but it won't last. No frost for us yet.

  4. I enjoy watching the rain come down and I too walk around the house watching it. I'm even worse if it is snow. Love watching it snow.

  5. Thank you for your rainy day post. I actually love the rain and love the sound of it....so your video was awesome! I also loved the look out all of your windows! Yes a pot belly stove would be very nice on your porch, although your house does seem nice and cozy in the rain. Soon we will have a lot of "white" falling here and won't be able to hear it but we sure will see it! It's so pretty but dangerous with all the ice that accompanies the snow. Take good care Melba and hubby! Be happy it's mostly only rain you're getting!

  6. Well, I would rather have a snow storm than a 2 day rain. At least you can go out in the snowstorm.

  7. I love a rainy day! You described yours so beautifully. That’s great news about the cast. My doctor never mentioned therapy but it would have probably been a good thing for me. Most of the time, I forget that my wrist was ever broken.

  8. That definitely is a drenching rain. I always like rainy days since I don't feel obligated to go outside and work in the yard. I'm to the point in the year when I want to just relax for awhile before the leaves really get to the point when they have to be raked. Not there yet, but lots of things out in the yard that have to be shoehorned into the potting shed and garage for their winter's sleep. All the plants that I want to overwinter are inside now and just in time since we had a temp of 30 this morning. All my beautiful coleus are dead ducks---so sad looking all drooped over. Fortunately I did get around to taking cuttings of the ones that I especially like.

It's good to hear that you have only two more weeks with that a cast. Do take it easy once it's off and follow the Dr. and physical therapist's orders about resuming full and proper use of it. No jumping into leaf raking just yet for you!

    Take care.

  9. Just 2 more weeks until the cast comes off!!! I didn't go for the therapy that I was supposed to go to. Made my kids mad at me but I couldn't be bothered going. I did wear my sling for a while though, just to make sure not to overuse my wrist.
Love that little video with the sound of the rain. Sure was coming down. I hope tomorrow you get sunshine!

  10. Do you have a fireplace or a woodstove in the house? That looks like a dreary old day. I'm happy you have an end in sight for your wrist! -Jenn

  11. You really got it! And your porch looks like a wonderful place to watch. I know you'll be glad to get that cast off!

  12. I adore your porch with it's cozy bed. We've had a few rainy days lately and I actually love them. The ground needs a good soaking before the cold of winter sets in. I get cozy in the family room and knit and watch movies when it's like that. Zoey curls up on my lap and all is well with the world. Ellie looks very content there on the porch.
I'm so glad to read that you'll get your cast off. I know that you're looking forward to that day.
    Blessings and hugs,
    Betsy

  13. I love to watch the rain and especially on a pond like yours. Your screened in porch is just a dream to me and that porch swing! My Grandmother had a porch swing that all us kids loved so much. We all still have happy memories about that swing. It's good to hear you'll have the cast off before the holidays. Thanks for the video with that beautiful sound of rain!

  14. I'm glad that you'll get that cast off soon. I bet that rain brought down a lot of leaves. I hope you can get them taken care of a little at a time without hurting your wrist. Raking seems like a job that would hurt because of the pressure on the wrist and the constant flexing of it. The view of your yard is gorgeous no matter which way you look, especially with the blooming flowers and pond. I could sit on your porch and listen to that rain for a long time if it were warm enough. I love the sound of the rain. That good soaking will help the plants over the winter. Thanks for the video!

  15. Those 2 weeks may seem longer than the past several. But sounds like good news. And the sound of the pouring rain came through in your video loud enough for me to think it was right here. Our rain was over a period of 4 days last weekend and since then, the cold snap is here. 27 degrees now 5 mornings in a row. I'm not a cold weather person even though I have lived up here in Ohio for ever. Give me sun and give me heat, I say. Glad the kitties were dry, and that sneaky Smokey was not out in that rain. 16. Hello,
The winds of November brought us cold temperatures and then the wind switched from the North to the South, we are enjoying a five day Indian Summer. Highs in the 60's in Northwest Wisconsin in November.. we will take it.
    I enjoyed your photos.
Best wishes with your cast removal and physical therapy.
    Love, Carla

  17. Henny, I share your longing for that roaring fire. I just bought a fireplace surround and plan to make a faux fireplace in my living room.

  18. The rain was certainly coming down in bucketsful! I love the sound of rain on the roof, but heavy rain all day can be so depressing sometimes. I'm glad your cast will come off soon, you will feel so much better then :) xx

  19. Dear friend it looks like you did get a lot of rain. Guess it takes rain to be grateful for those sunny days. We were late here for our killing frost which just arrived this past week. We were 24 degrees this morning...definitely heavy sweater weather. Take care of your wrist. I did therapy when I broke mine...wouldn't know now it was ever broken...it will be okay friend and you will be back to doing the things you love to do. Hugs!

  20. It rained so much here that a tree fainted in our neighborhood and knocked the electricity out for half a day yesterday. Sometimes with such sandy soil as ours when the sand gets saturated they just topple. I bet you were glad it was only rain and not thunder and lightning.

  21. I enjoyed your video. Hearing that rain relaxes me. A stove on your porch would be a great thing to have along with a nap on your porch bed.

  22. I hope you're soon fancy free with that wrist :) It has been some crazy weather in eastern NC, and so so windy in recent days! The water is high out here - rather floody. Take care and stay warm. That wood stove on the porch sounds like a lovely idea.

  23. Raining here as well, and I too just stare out of the window, wishing for just a wee bit of sunshine... But it's that time of year/season where we start to hunker down, catch up on reading or unfinished sewing projects, all the while thinking of Christmas projects I need to get started on.
Your view is lovely, enjoy it with a heavenly cup of tea and thank you for sharing it with us.
    greetings from katmom.

  24. I am one of the rare souls who loves rain...within safe limits of course!
We've had cold temperatures, then, surprisingly, it was warm enough to go out without a jacket today! Surprise!
Missouri weather is interesting to say the least.

I wonder if a little electric fireplace would cheer your back porch?

    Hugs,
    Laura of Harvest Lane Cottage

  25. A whole day of rain...lucky you! We sure could use a day of rain but it will probably snow. Good to hear that your time in the cast is counting down:)

  26. I always think it is a good day to take a good book and curl up somewhere and read. When I was a kid, if it was warm enough, I liked to go to the barn and read.

  27. A few years ago, I fell and broke my right arm, and for about 2 months I had to do everything with my left hand. It was quite an experience trying to brush my teeth and wield a fork to get food my mouth (which I found I could do if I turned the fork upside down like they do in UK), among other things. Best wishes for your bones to knit well.
