Mama and Roses

My Mother's Day post...a little early

Not much to post about these days. Well, the roses are blooming, that's something, and Sunday is Mother's Day, that's big.

Have I ever mentioned that my Mother's name was Jewel?  Yes, and she truly was a jewel.
Mama loved roses. Once upon a time, back in the early 1990's, before mama gave up her little home and moved in with my sister...

we went shopping for rose bushes, mama and me. My plan was to dig up a bed in her back yard and make her a rose garden. A beautiful rose garden. Well, all I accomplished that day was to make more work for mama in the coming days.

My digging, chopping, and planting would have made a good teaching video on "How not to build a rose garden".  Anyhow, that was long ago and my intentions were good...that poorly built rose garden has long since been bulldozed over.

Oh Willie, the pink roses, pink wheelbarrow, and little Weetie in that first picture reminded me of you. Hope you like it.

This is a skimpy little rose but hangs heavy with blooms.

I do believe pink roses are my favorite. Mama loved yellow roses.  Wonder why I've never bought a yellow rose? That will be my next purchase!

maybe these knock-out roses are country roses, you know kinda like The Town Mouse and The Country Mouse. :)

move the camera a little to the left...
and there's a country cat drinking water.

and this poor struggling white rose surrounded by weeds has a few pretty blooms. The little yellow flowers are called Golden Star and grow wild here.

Mama was always saying the funniest things...

When we first bought this piece of property, we would come out on weekends and work; clearing trees and honeysuckle vines, etc. One Sunday we were coming out to burn a pile of brush, which bothered mama. She said to me...

"Melba, I'd be ashamed to go out there and burn brush on Sunday. You know that's how the man got put in the moon; burning brush on Sunday".

Happy Mother's Day!

Love,
Henny

  6. Your Mama is beautiful, just like her daughter! All of your rose bushes are so pretty and for that matter all of your little farm is just perfect. Everything looks so nice and well kept. I would love to go walking around and maybe sit in the swing for a spell. Have a very Happy Mother's Day Henny!

  7. You look so much like your dear sweet mother. And you love flowers just like she did. I hope you have a happy Mothers Day even if you probably can't visit with your girls. I hope things go back to normal soon so we can visit our friends and family again.

  11. Happy Mother's Day! Your mom was funny, but in a charming way. Did she cuss? I have a feeling she didn't...or if she did, she was just as charming and lady-like. Now, who couldn't like roses? Most of us do, right, though I think the ones I don't like as much are the red ones for Valentine's. They're nice, but I prefer something more wild looking. Your garden is looking very bright and calm. Is it true that the wildlife is more pronounced these past two months? I have noticed more birdsong around here but it may that I'm just paying attention. Pink is definitely very pretty and you know, pink and yellow together are even prettier. I hope you do get a chance to find a nice yellow rose for your place. Well, I know it'll be weird without your girls and grandchildren around for the festivities but I wish you many blessings, Melba!

  12. Sweet memories and picture of your Mother. I like the man in the moon story. Yellow roses are ones I think are even prettier than the red. I think their scent is stronger also. Happy Mothers Day to you, Betsy

  13. Henny, what gorgeous roses! I love them. And Smokey outside getting a refreshing sip of water. I hope you did
not have a frost this morn. We have 27 and snow on the ground. And the freezing nights aren't to end until Wed.
Not sure what the damage will be to the apple trees I have blooming. It looked like you had lots of sun in the
pictures. Hope you do have a nice Mother's Day, what with no family visiting now. Can't wait for that to end safely.

  14. You have a nice variety of roses. We have lots of rose bushes but every single one is the exact same variety and color. Who would do that! Your mama was special and you have such sweet memories of her, Henny. I hope you enjoy your Mother’s Day tomorrow.

  19. You taught me how to wash my face
And how to use the potty..
You made me eat up all my greens
And wiped my nose when snotty..

You taught me to say Please and Thanks,
    Because politeness is the way..
So ‘Please’ can I borrow some money?
    Thanks!
    Just kidding..
    Happy Mother’s Day! :).

  20. Oh your mother's name. My grandfather's name was Bert Jewel and he was named (I assume) after an older relative of his who was named Jewel. It must be a southern thing.

  21. Henny, I LOVE when you share stories about your mom. I love, love it. Thank You!
Roses are one that I am not very good at growing. I have two rose bushes, one from my grandma's farm and another from my friend Judy. Both are coming back from the winter, I am happy about that.

  23. LOL- Your mom sounds like a riot. I always wondered how that man got up there!
It was nice of you to make a rose garden even if it didn't work out. Your own roses are just beautiful. I love them, too, and hope to get a couple rose bushes in to our small garden. xo Diana

  25. Your property is so lovely!! I don't have great luck with roses here, yet I keep trying....I put in another one just last year, and so far it's still alive!

  26. I love roses, too. David bought me a red one for Mother's Day.

  27. Your mama sounds like she would be lots of fun! I love roses too, and my mother loves plants and blooming shrubs of all kinds, but especially roses and peonies. Your yard is looking so peaceful!

  28. I am laughing at what your mama said! Oh, I so love that. I had never heard it. But when I was a kid, we did not do anything except the very necessary work. Feeding and milking...and cooking and dishes. No laundry, no mowing the yard, nothing else.

I love yellow roses, too...and a lot of the time I think of them as my favorite.
